EDIT: The Official Oscar website has Adams & Tom Hanks as nominees  Now gone but who knows wtf is going on?!!
So they switched out both Tom Hanks and Amy Adams last minute? I think they could be genuine errors tbh. But I'm kind of annoyed that Meryl seems to have been nominated basically, for being Meryl. She's a great actress, but does she need to be nominated for everything?

In regards to Amy though, I agree with John in that her role in 'Arrival' was, although strong, it was fairly low key. There was more depth to her character in NA imo, so I'm sad to see that didn't get the nominations right in the acting categories tbh. Yassss at Denzel and Viola being nominated for 'Fences'. Really looking forward to watching that! One of my most anticipated releases  From the trailer alone, their performances give me goosebumps.

Very surprised 'Elle' didn't get any of the picture awards though! Fully expected that to win Foreign Language with a potential nomination in Best Picture!

It is a shame to see Elle not even getting a foreign language nomination, I am really looking forward to seeing it. It kind of reminds me of films like Volver and La Vie En Rose where Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard respectively where stealing all of the attention and they all ended up failing to get the foreign language nomination as well (even though both Elle and Volver were Golden Globe nominated in the same category) :(

Elle didn't even make the shortlist so we knew it wasn't going to get the nomination

No really big shockers here, except for Amy Adams to some extent. I do think she deserved a nomination for Arrival. Her performance is so subtle and carries the film wonderfully. I actually think it's the better, more complex and layered of the two performances she gave this year.

I expect that La La Land will sweep tbh. Best Picture, Director, Cinematography, Original Screenplay, Song and Score are pretty much locks I think. I don't think Stone and Gosling will win and the only thing that could get in the way of La La Land winning Best Picture is Moonlight at this moment. Haven't seen the latter but it is my most anticipated film of this awards season!

Edited by Frank!

Both Arrival and Nocturnal Animals really helped to raise my opinion of Amy. I preferred the latter as a film but think I'd have nominated her for the former - Nocturnal Animals for me was more about the novel and the performances from Jake, Aaron and Michael. Arrival was totally her movie.

And they can't just "switch" out nominees can they? Like how is the voting done?

Arrival was Amy playing to type, but the last half hour or so was easily better than anything Meryl did in FFJ. Of course Meryl being nominated is an entirely different thing altogether and one I'm not TOO worried about as she's never less than good in anything.

I genuinely think Amy was brilliant, some of the subtle roles are the best ones.

I do honestly think the Meryl Golden Globes speech / Trump calling her overrated played a big part in her getting votes for best actress you know!

Amy was definitely in my top 5 actress performances of the year, I thought she was incredible in Arrival (and better in Arrival than she was in Nocturnal Animals!)

Yeah I agree with Joe that as soon as Meryl made her GG speech, that locked her place in the final 5 down!

Some interesting and shocking facts about black actresses. (Even though I'm somewhat sceptical about some of the nominations being shoehorns these facts made me a bit sad):

Viola Davis is the first black actress to be nominated 3 times....

Octavia Spencer is the first black actress to be nominated again after winning...

Quite shocking really, so I hope we do start seeing more roles for black actresses. Lupita nyong'o was amazing in 12 Years a Slave, and I feel like she hasn't done as much as she should be doing, given her talent.

Yeah, speaking of Lupita, it is a bit of a shame that her role in Queen of Katwe faded away come awards season, she was really strong in it and it was a return to form for her after so many voice roles (even though she's a pretty great voice actress too) but then I guess the female categories were really tough (it's hard to see who she would replace in the supporting actress line-up, probably Octavia Spencer too but I think Hidden Figures is a really popular choice at the moment) so it's not hard to see why. I'm looking forward to seeing her in Black Panther though too.

On a side note, does anyone find Ruth Negga really unlikeable in interviews or is it just me? I'm sure she's great in Loving and I'm still excited to see the film but I do wish someone like Amy Adams/Emily Blunt/Jessica Chastain or even Annette Bening were taking the places of her and Meryl (love her loads as an actress but there was so much better from this year, she wasn't even the best performance in the film tbh).
