Andrew's ReviewNow That's What I Call Music! 27 aka Now 27 was the first release of 1994 in time for the Easter holiday. Unlike the norm, Now 27 was released on a Tuesday which was, and still is, considered a strange custom. A total of 38 tracks made up the tracklisting, and this consisted of artists like Ace Of Base, East 17, D:Ream, M People and Dina Carroll.

3 UK #1s were chosen out of a possible 6 from the time Now 26 was released until the time Now 27 was. The 3 missing #1s were Take That – Babe, Mr Blobby – Mr Blobby and Mariah Carey – Without You.

Now 27 introduced us to The Cranberries and Reel 2 Real feat. The Mad Stuntman, but it was also the first time in the series for Bee Gees and Bitty McLean.

For a third of the total tracklisting, it was the only time in the series for Wendy Moten, Tori Amos, Gin Blossoms, Smashing Pumpkins, Doop, K7, Credit To The Nation, E.Y.C., Deep Forest, Shara Nelson, Carleen Anderson, Degrees Of Motion and Joe Roberts

Now 27 just couldn't live up to Now 26 for me, and it is a shame because many songs are one hit wonders, whilst others charted beyond #30 (Right Said Fred and Juliet Roberts). I wouldn't remember much of the music on Now 27 unless I gave it another listen, it just doesn't leave you feeling any satisfaction at all. Such a shame.

Although I have a Top 5 below as per the other reviews, they really were the only songs I enjoyed listening to from the whole compilation.

 

Artwork Rating: 4/10 Very Poor

Not really anything special to look at, and by this point in the series the "sky" theme had already been overused. The cover chosen is not as striking nor as creative as some of the other covers from the time.

 

Disc 1 Favourite: D:Ream – Things Can Only Get Better

A tight call between this one and M People. D:Ream had a few big hits at the time but this one was my favourite and perhaps their most remembered hit too.

 

Disc 2 Favourite: 2 Unlimited – Let The Beat Control Your Body

A high tempo disc of dance infused music, and none particularly stands out from the rest, but 2 Unlimited were just an unstoppable chart force at the time and like many others I still enjoy their music to this day.

 

Overall Rating: 3/10 Extremely Poor

Just a big let down from it's predecessor. The quality of the music is low and there are just so many fillers that were somehow squeezed into this average at best compilation. I'm not impressed and there could certainly have been some improvements made to the tracklist.

Return To Innocence by Enigma and Linger by The Cranberries would be the pick of those songs.

I remember buying this CD from a British Heart Foundation store back in December 2014.

I bought this at the time primarily for “I Like To Move It” (and because I am very old) - but 1 star? For an album that contains the Smashing Pumpkins “Disarm” - that is worth 2 stars ALONE surely?

 

“Linger” by the Cranberries and “Cornflake Girl” by Tori Amos.. these are definitely not 1 hit-wonders, The Cranberries had at least 1 other hit!! Oh and “Rocks” is also a BANGER.
