March 7, 20178 yr There is clearly something wrong in the UK with the way the charts are built. You don't find it in any other country, even in the US where streaming has been integrated for a long time. I don't know what's wrong with the UK and why the OCC is always so slow to re-adjust things, but it's looking like a joke. In fact, this has been the Case in Scandinavia for many years. What you see now in the UK, already started inthere in 2010. Digital sales are still quite big in the UK compared to Scandinavia when streaming is over 97 % of the single market. I dont think there is a turning back when it comes to streaming. Iam still quite suprised that so many are still buying songs from Itunes in 2017.
March 7, 20178 yr I've done a calculation to try and figure out where these Ed tracks would be without the sales of people just streaming the entire album, and... he's still very dominant but other tracks are given a chance also. 01 (01) 'Shape of You' 03 (02) 'Castle on the Hill' 04 (03) 'Galway Girl' 07 (04) 'Perfect' 13 (06) 'New Man' 16 (07) 'Dive' 18 (08) 'Happier' 20 (09) 'Supermarket Flowers' 23 (10) 'How Would You Feel' 30 (12) 'What Do I Know' 33 (14) 'Eraser' 36 (15) 'Barcelona' 39 (16) 'Nancy Mulligan' 40 (17) 'Hearts Don't Break Around Here' 51 (18) 'Bibia Be Ye Ye' 77 (21) 'Save Myself' 11 (23) 'Ciao Adios' 12 (24) 'Green Light' 14 (25) 'Solo Dance' 27 (34) 'No More Sad Songs' 37 (41) 'That's What I Like' hopefully the OCC get the idea.

March 7, 20178 yr Fun fact: Something Just Like This was only the 11th biggest seller yesterday   it won't happen but I'd be totally here for Ed taking up the whole top 10, what a spectacle.
March 7, 20178 yr His dominance has INCREASED  He is at least boosting the industry in Adele-like fashion, both singles and album sales will be huge this week, way beyond just No.1.
March 7, 20178 yr As an aside, some of the slides this week are brutal, even if they are by default. The OCC would have us believe that about 15 long runners have all just simultaneously run out of steam! Edited March 7, 20178 yr by gooddelta
March 7, 20178 yr He is literally coming for a top 16  but I think ChainCold will fall among them somewhere.
March 7, 20178 yr Ed will be playing Top 20 Bingo this week with the hope of completing the full House of Top 20 peak positions in his career, he just needs 6, 10, 11, 14, 16, 17, 19, 20 (I am including the peak positions he had of 7 and 12 as a featured artist). Wonder if there are any Artists that have achieved that before. Looking like 19 and 20 will not be achieved this week given the (almost) total dominance!
March 7, 20178 yr Looking like 19 and 20 will not be achieved this week given the (almost) total dominance! He's with no shortage of opportunities to amend that in future weeks though  Edit: Temporarily forgot this is regarding peak positions, not just standing positions. :P Edited March 7, 20178 yr by Dircadirca

"Boosting the industry" in terms of global figures yes, but that doesn't mean anything when so many new acts could really suffer from his domination over the next few weeks. We all know how important it is for new acts to get top40 hits to get some recognition and radio impact, and he's going to completely overshadow every new release and new act, this is sad for the music industry.

I totally agree, this was my main concern, it's just a bit OTT, at first it looks cool to set a record, on the other hand it totally annihilates all the competition from other artists releasing new single material that week.

If it's just this week it wouldn't be that bad, but I fear it may continue for weeks... I've always been against the idea of including radio play into the charts, but the more I think of it, the more I'm convinced they should include it now. The charts are becoming more and more influenced by Spotify big playlists, but how are these Spotify playlists different from radio playlists? People stream these playlist like they would listen to a radio, they don't necesseraly like every song on the playlists the same way they don't necesseraly like every song played on radio. If you allow Spotify playlists to influence the charts, you should allow radio plays to do the same.

The difference is that people can choose to skip songs on Spotify playlists, and they choose which playlists they listen to. You don't choose what you hear on radio at all, you'd get songs being unfairly boosted in the charts simply because radio are playing them. The US charts are even more stagnant than ours thanks in part to airplay, so I'd be strongly against including it in the UK chart.
