There is a little-known third alternative to him being found guilty or not guilty. Speaker Nancy Pelosi could choose to not hold a trial, which is within her powers, leaving him to face the election impeached but not cleared. A sort of limbo.

You’re not a fan of proof then?

You’re happy to regurgitate stuff he says too without even thinking about what it actually means?

Of course he is, he blindly and unquestionably believes everything Trump or Johnson says.

Was watching the vote just after midnight our time last night, 7pm EST, and one US commentator says there's only a 10% chance, in his opinion, of him being found guilty.

shock horror a Senate with a Republican majority won't find him guilty? NO FUCKING WAY

My view is that Pelosi is being very canny. She is not sending off the articles of impeachment to the Senate until she feels they'll get a fair trial. Naturally that will be never.

Orange man wants nothing more than to say 'Total Exoneration From Democratic Witch Hunt' as soon as possible and doing this denies him and associated toadies that victory.

This is a far more popular impeachment than Bill Clinton's was at the time, Clinton's only became popular when it became apparent the Senate were not going to remove him, at this point, anyone paying any attention knows they aren't going to remove him. This delay allows public opinion to fester against Trump. Maybe support comes out for him. But the longer it hangs over him, he has divide his attention between it and getting reelected.

Additionally, there are rather a lot of Republican seats up for election in 2020, with a few close races looking likely, Colorado and Maine to name a couple. Now, it does need to be a two-thirds majority to remove him but, should public opinion really start to go against Trump, it would be a good move for those Senators to indicate their lack of support for him, and then the dominoes might begin to fall.

I just like Trump so don't want to see him removed from office. Fair enough if he loses the election but am hoping for a second term.

Is it a crime to like a world leader or even two? :)

We know, but it wouldn't hurt to be objective or critical sometimes. The blind unadulterated adoration is nauseating and it's like he can do NOTHING wrong in your eyes.

But if he has committed a crime, and the House have now charged him as such, would you not say it endangers the office of the presidency and by proxy the entire world if a corrupt criminal can break the law while sitting in office and face no material consequences?

What would get you to drop your support? Nobody, ever, not politics and not your daily life should be owed unconditional support.

There is this myth going around on both sides of the Atlantic that the only accountability politicians can have is to their voters and that is setting a very bad precedent.

Well I don't believe he has done anything wrong. The vote went with the parties without exception. It's just the Democrats wanting to get rid of him because they think Pence would be easier to beat next year.

I'd say that would backfire were its their plan, which it's not. Trump's a known quantity, he could absolutely still win but his polling has been low and many votes were based on 'give this man from outside DC a chance', which won't be the case this time because he's turned out exactly as everyone expected him to be - so undecideds may not want to go for him. Pence would offer the opportunity for a refresh. You really think the inner Trump circle is going to vote anyone but Republican?

Anyway, that is not the reason - and the votes didn't go entirely with the parties, Gabbard just voted 'present'. There has been huge amounts of evidence and they won't have wanted to let the term pan out without at least making a show of it. If the evidence was there, it damages the office (and by its nature, their polls) if they let it sit.

So you think the phone call in question never happened?

Trump in office damages the reputation forever and has done immense damage to democracy.

Democracy elected him though and no-one can say it didn't.

Hillary got more votes?

All he has done is attack the democratic institutions of the country and irreparably damage the reputation of the office. Trump is no president.

Chris, are you able to answer this and the points as to the actual reasons why you think he has done nothing wrong. Or are you just here to troll?

Yes the phone call was made but I don't think he did anything wrong having read the transcript. The Ukranian President has said that he felt under no pressure from Trump during the phone call.

Yes she did but that's not how they elect the President as well you know. I do actually think the EC is unfair but what can we do about it?

So you accept that Trump asked a foreign power to investigate an opponent even though there was not a shred of evidence that Joe Biden or his son had done anything wring. In doing so, he acted illegally.

Maybe he did ask him but if you read deeply the Bidens aren't as squeaky clean as everyone thinks. Nothing specific but there are lots of rumours about Joe and his son which they'll bring up if he's the candidate.

It doesn’t matter. He asked a foreign power to interfere in an election. That is illegal.

But you literally just said that democracy elected him and we know damn well it did not.
