Not a bad line-up but I did far prefer my winner here to the rest still:

1 Kenneth Branagh "My Week with Marilyn"

2 Christopher Plummer "Beginners"

3 Max von Sydow "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close"

4 Jonah Hill "Moneyball"

Not seen: Warrior

Kenneth Branagh was my acting highlight from Marilyn, I even preferred him to Michelle Williams! He made me laugh out loud at moments and and just thought he was a great character all round. Plummer and Sydow both played very interesting characters and were both big scene-stealers but I can imagine them both played by other actors quite easily tbh. Jonah Hill did absolutely nothing in Moneyball and no idea how he got a nomination for simply appearing in a serious film for once, that doesn't make an outstanding performance just because you're out of your comfort zone a bit :drama: I'd have swapped out Jonah Hill and put in Philip Seymour Hoffman for the same film, I was much more drawn to him in scenes and he'd have made a better nominee imo.

I also remember there being some sort of push for Alan Rickman in the final Harry Potter installment which would have been a very inspired choice. It would have been nice if that franchise was able to get one acting nomination like Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings, Batman etc. did in the past... Plus, it feels wrong that never got an Oscar nomination in his entire lifetime and this now feels like his most iconic role so would have been a good choice. On another side note, I think Imelda Staunton would have made a fantastic nominee for supporting actress in Order of the Phoenix too, one of the most insufferable movie villains in years and genuinely scary too. I've only seen Saoirse Ronan in Atonement that year so far but she was better than her in my opinion (plus this nomination should have gone to either Vanessa Redgrave or Keira Knightley for the same movie in the first place tbh...).

Max von Sydow did hardly anything in that movie  bit of a WTF nomination. It's also criminal how Nick Nolte got a nimination for Warrior but Joel Edgerton didn't.
