July 24, 20178 yr Kylo Ren was a good villain I think, but he didn't really stick in my mind as someone particularly memorable so I can see why he's so low down. He definitely had his moments, but I feel more needs to come out of him to distinguish him from other Star Wars villains. Similar thing with Raye and Finn, although the former's probably my favourite out of those. Not really standing out atm but I'm hoping the next film will develop them a bit more (it happened with Luke and Co at first ofc.!). BB8 was honestly the only new character I instantly took to from TFA, droids>>>>humans :kink: You are right you've lost me, Anakin should be WAY lower :P While I get it can be hard to develop someone that was always destined to be evil, there wasn't even a moment he came across as remotely likeable or corrupted, it was painfully obvious right from the start. It should be sad that he turned to the dark side, but honestly it wasn't as he is clearly much more suited to it! He could've been good had they got a better actor I guess, but then again, can any actor can really make 'I don't like sand, it's course and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere' sound good? :') Good stuff so far! Interested to see who wins~ Edited July 24, 20178 yr by Chez Wombat
July 25, 20178 yr I totally agree with Kylo Ren - such a weak character in comparison to the rest of the Sith that came before him, for example.
July 25, 20178 yr Author I totally agree with Kylo Ren - such a weak character in comparison to the rest of the Sith that came before him, for example. Yeah, hopefully he'll have a bit more to do in the upcoming films but he really was not very menacing as a villain, especially with such high villain standards set by the other Star Wars movies... Thanks Sean!! :D Kylo Ren was a good villain I think, but he didn't really stick in my mind as someone particularly memorable so I can see why he's so low down. Interested to see who wins~ Yes, I imagine we'll be getting lots more of Kylo Ren in the upcoming films which will hopefully establish him as a bit more of an exciting villain but he was really not great compared to the other great Star Wars villains of the past. I agree about BB8 though, what a cutie (he's still to be announced here by the way!!). I do agree that Hayden Christensen was a poor choice for such a major role in a massive franchise but I did enjoy the character at times and I can't put him much lower considering the massive part he plays in the stories. Some of his lines (and line delivery for that matter) are truly terrible, the one you mentioned has to be one of the worst lines in movie history?!?! Thanks Chez
July 25, 20178 yr Author 25 . CHIRRUT ÎMWE - Chirrut didn't exactly play a huge role in Rogue One but he completely stole the show with his action scenes and even has a great line with "I'm one with the Force; the Force is with me." that is repeated plenty of times in the film. I liked his friend Baze Malbus too in the film but Chirrut always demanded my attention the most by just being so badass and cool. It's a shame we won't be able to return to this character because he really was exciting for the brief time we were able to watch him. http://49.media.tumblr.com/b9ef26a9e9e3c21349fbaa0ee42b5f78/tumblr_o0y66wnCkR1u5d459o6_250.gif 24 . MAZ KANATA - It's probably a bit questionable to have such a minor character ahead of the leads of The Force Awakens but that's just testament to how memorable Maz is in comparison to the blandness of Daisy Ridley (:heehee:). She is voiced excellently by Lupita Nyong'o and was an instant scene-stealer, it's such a shame we didn't get to see more of her in the film before her estate was attacked. I believe she has been confirmed for Episode 8 too so I'm excited for that. http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m0kyt6ZE9u1r3co2jo8_r1_500.gif 23 . KI-ADI-MUNDI - Ki-Adi-Mundi has always been my favourite of the more unestablished Jedi and therefore he earns a rather high placing here before we get to the real big hitters like Yoda and Obi-Wan. He is one of the older and more experienced Jedi Masters and looks completely cool doing almost anything. His death due to Order 66 is also one of the saddest in my opinion as he shouts "come on" to his Clones before he turns around and is killed :( 22 . JABBA THE HUTT - Jabba is probably one of the less threatening Star Wars villains (although, still pretty scary as I certainly wouldn't want to be enslaved by him!) but is certainly one of the most fun. He is what can only be described as a giant slug and also a massive crime lord on Tatooine. He is eventually strangled by Leia after she had been forced to be his slave. 21 . CASSIAN ANDOR - Cassian was not a character that I was expecting to love going into Rogue One but he ended up being my second favourite character in the entire movie. Diego Luna brought tonnes of charm to the role and it was really easy to root for his character. He obviously doesn't have as much time to grow due to just being in one movie but he's very lovable in a cheeky Han Solo sort of way.
July 25, 20178 yr I totally agree that Kylo Ren is a slightly rubbish villain but I always took that to be the point. He's conflicted throughout the film about where his future lies and I believe it is supposed to echo Annakin's own state of mind. Kylo is basically a messed up kid with parental issues and a sense of self importance. Snoke is manipulating him just like Palpatine did with grandpa Vader. I always figured he was meant to grow into being a proper villain in the next episode. Much like Rey will find her true path (far too low in the list for me btw) in episode VIII. Also someone referenced Kylo Ren as being a Sith earlier and at no point has he been referred to as one in the story. They may be right in the end but it could be presumptuous

Perhaps presumptuous yes. Should have phrased it as someone who disliked the Jedi :P Mundi is a fab extra Jedi, love his scenes on the high council and as a playable character in Star Wars Battlefront II! Yeah, Mundi is a great addition to the universe and unfortunately always overlooked on countdowns such as this. I never got around to playing any of the Battlefront games even though I'd love to, they did look very good but I was too busy playing Lego Games on Xbox :heehee: Thanks Sean!

PADMÉ AMIDALA - Padmé started off as a really promising character when she was first introduced as Queen Amidala with amazing costumes and basically just looking regal af. Being played by Natalie Portman is always a bonus too and she really did her best with the role but unfortunately, the character was marred by poor dialogue and awkward romance scenes with Anakin that were enough to put most people off the films altogether. I still enjoy a lot of her parts but it's a shame she wasn't given a stronger storyline and script to work with. 19. POE DAMERON - There is only one brand new Force Awakens character left to come so Poe has done really well to get this high. He had a lot less screen time than Finn and Rey in the film but made a much larger impression on me, he is far more enjoyable to watch and his loads of charm which makes him lovable in a Han Solo type way, I'm really hoping he'll play a bigger part in the rest of the trilogy. 18. CHEWBACCA - Chewbacca is one of Star Wars most famous characters so it probably comes as a bit of shock that he does not even make the top 15 here. He is a fantastic character and it's always nice to see him pop up in films when he does but ultimately, he doesn't have a lot to do apart from growl and be iconic so it's tough to put him above a lot of the other major characters.
July 31, 20177 yr Author 17. Qui-Gon Jinn Qui-Gon Jinn was an immediate favourite of mine when I first ever saw The Phantom Menace so I was a bit gutted that we never got to see the character again. Liam Neeson is the master of looking effortlessly cool anyway but you could tell this Jedi had years of experience under his belt. He also has a really great send-off scene which feels really earned after following him and Obi-Wan for the whole film - he's a very underrated character in my opinion. 16. Luke Skywalker Probably a bit of a shocker due to probably being in the the franchise's top three most iconic characters ever but I've never enjoyed him as much as some other characters in the original trilogy. He's a decent leading man but he's always been a lot less interesting than people like Han Solo and Leia and therefore it's difficult to warm to him as much or pay as much attention to him when he's on screen. I'm so excited that he's going to be a major character in Episode 8 though, Hamill looked SO right back in his Jedi robes at the end of The Force Awakens. 15. Jar Jar Binks Jar Jar is perhaps one of the most disliked Star Wars characters there is and I think a lot of people would prefer it if the character was completely cut from the universe. I don't know if it's because I was so young when I grew up with the prequels but I always found Jar Jar pretty funny and likeable and therefore still enjoy him now as he was one of my childhood favourites. Comic relief is important in films and I think he provides that pretty well in these films so he earns his spot this high for me.
July 31, 20177 yr YAS at the Jar Jar love. NEVER as terrible as others made him out to be. I was 10 years old when I went to see The Phantom Menace at the cinema and I thought he was great. Do I still enjoy him on the same level? No. Does he now annoy me during rewatches? Still, no. I get what you're saying about Luke but he'd be an automatic top 10 for me. Love Qui Gon also.
July 31, 20177 yr I always thought Luke was a bit bland and was just about to become interesting as a fully trained and capable Jedi who edges close to turning to the darkside in episode VI, but then the series ended, although hopefully they do something with him going forward. I feel he's far better than some who are possibly yet to come. As for Jar Jar... As a child of the 70s who marvelled at the original trilogy, when The Phantom menace came out it kind of broke my heart. So many things were wrong with it. Miscasting Vader was bad enough, and the inexplicably terrible dialogue was painful but Jar Jar to me was the worst. I did find him a racist caricature who was annoying, not remotely fun or comic and a complete distraction in every scene he appeared. Qui Gon, Maul and Kenobi were all great, Amidala had potential but the rest did nothing for me. To this day I find it difficult to watch for long but have to remind myself it does have the best lightsaber duel in the series. I can see why kids at the time would love it, as George Lucas himself said he made it with kids in mind. Looking forward to see the top of this list
July 31, 20177 yr I didn't mind Jar Jar when I was younger (naturally), it was just when I got older when I realised that he just wasn't essential at all :') asides from just being too obviously annoying to be funny, there's just no real development to him at all and he doesn't even appear after the first film so it all seemed a bit pointless. Qui Gon was good if underused though, Luke is great, but I do agree he is somewhat a caricature of your typical hero at heart so isn't quite up there with the best.
July 31, 20177 yr I think that Jar Jar is essential for comic relief. Ok, so most find him unfunny, but if you remove him from the film it becomes an extremely serious film. I do think he is needed there for children who are viewing the film the first time. And I've never really understood the racist caricature claims. Even if he does seem like one (and I don't see it), it clearly wasn't the intended message. The clear message of the film overall couldn't be more further from racism when you consider two different cultures putting aside their differences to fight back against a cruel regime. I think it's unfair to claim Jake Lloyd as miscast as Anakin. The whole point is that Vader started out as a nice person and to be honest, Jake plays the role well. There were one or two dodgy lines that a 9 year old can't really be criticised for not being able to pull off, but as child actors go, there really wasn't anything wrong with his performance. He was the first proper child actor in Star Wars and I feel a lot of people are just reacting to the fact there is a child there. I also feel so sorry for Jake in real life, the abuse he's suffered from the role from people who believed they owned Star Wars. His life is pretty miserable right now. I'm his age and I wonder how I could have handled such abuse at a tough stage of growing up. You could argue that Hayden Christensen was miscast. I quite like his performance in general-there are a few scenes/line deliveries in AOTC I could do without-but he didn't have a particularly commanding presence and couldn't always pull off the dodgy dialogue. However, I do find he shows up Natalie Portman on a couple of occasions.

I think it definitely comes down to what era of Star Wars you grew up with, if I grew up with the original trilogy then I'd probably hate a lot of the prequel characters but growing up with them means I enjoyed them a lot as a child and they've stuck with me since. I agree about the Phantom Menace lightsaber duel being one of the best although I think my absolute favourite is Yoda vs Sidious. The fight choreography in the prequel trilogy was amazing though *-* Thanks Severin!! Just because Jar Jar is not a character named at 40 year old fans of the original trilogy doesn't make him a bad character - he did a pretty good job of appealing to children and selling toys to be honest. Don't agree with that Natalie Portman shade though, she has such a good crying face  Thanks!!
August 3, 20177 yr Author http://n8itude.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/tumblr_inline_nzzra0Z31m1rd33wt_500.gif 14. Darth Maul - Darth Maul has to be one of the most menacing looking villains in the Star Wars universe and I remember properly geeking out as a kid as soon as he whipped out his double-sided lightsaber, nothing was cooler to me and I even had a toy one. Unfortunately, he gets sort of killed off in the Phantom Menace and we never get to see him in the movies ever again although I believe he re-appeared in the TV shows with robotic legs or something?!? As Severin mentioned, the duel at the end of the movie is one of the most exciting and best choreographed lightsaber battles in the Star Wars universe and a lot of that is due to how cool this character and his lightsaber is. 13. BB-8 - Basically droids > humans and BB-8 is no exception to this rule whatsoever, he is a complete cutie and basically earns this really high placing by just being adorable. He made way more of an impression on me in TFA than the boring leads Rey and Finn and he did it all with no dialogue which makes it even more impressive, the hardest I laughed during the entire film was his thumbs up :') 12. R2-D2 - Same as above really but R2-D2 is a bit more iconic so places slightly higher, R2-D2 is probably the most famous non-speaking character of all-time and it's not hard to see why, he's intelligent, useful and cute all at the same time. It's always nice seeing him pop up in the latest adventures as he's such a classic character and even a cameo from R2 makes the film slightly better :heehee:
August 4, 20177 yr I was petrified of Maul as a child and used to cry whenever I saw him! I dressed up as him once for a party and had the double edged saber and everything sponsored by my mothers fabulous face paint skills. He's definitely more memorable than most of the Sith for many reasons which is why I imagine he came back in the TV series with mechanical legs. I prefer R2D2 to BB-8 so glad R2 is ranked higher!
August 4, 20177 yr I've not seen Rogue One but whoever Cassian is, he deserves to be higher based purely on how hot he is.
August 4, 20177 yr RE: Natalie Portman shade, I actually love her but there are definitely scenes in AOTC where Christensen performs stronger, like when he admits he killed all the Tuskens. And yeah Darth Maul came back with robotic legs in Clones Wars. And they cancelled the show before any of it could be wrapped up so he went on the appear in Rebels. I haven't seen the recent series but I believe he tracked down Obi Wan on Tatooine and got killed for real. He was great in TPM but I had no desire to see him in anything else. He'd probably be a bit lower on my countdown.

Yeah, Christensen definitely had his good moments which is why it's such a shame everyone just seems to focus on the bad ones (although, lines like the sand line are really, really, really terrible so it's not hard to see why ) but Portman/Padmé is still the more charismatic and interesting character of the two for me. I would have loved to have seen Maul again but I guess it would be difficult anyway considering how many other villains there were to get through and a lot of them were even better/still to come. I'm glad we got to see duels with the likes of Grievous and Dooku instead of recycling Maul again even it would've been nice to see him again.
