Keane to release single on USB memory stick

Source: MW

Rock band Keane are to release their next single on a limited edition USB memory stick.

In addition to being made available in the usual CD, vinyl and digital formats, Nothing In My Way, the third single to be taken from the band’s Under The Iron Sea album, will be made available on 1,500 specially-produced memory sticks.

The 512mb capacity stick will retail for £3.99 and will include the song and its video, as well as a number of screensavers and web links. The memory stick will be re-usable, and will be presented in standard-sized CD packaging, with the stick shrink-wrapped to the sleeve artwork.

“We like doing things differently and are constantly looking for ways to give the fans something unique to add to their collection,†says Keane keyboardist Tim Rice-Oxley.

“We think it is more important than ever to have something physical to keep, as the world of music is becoming more virtual. The cool thing about this memory stick is that it’s re-usable, which has got to be a good thing for the future of the planet.â€

HMV’s head of music Gary Rolfe adds, “HMV has always helped to pioneer the development of new formats, so we’re delighted to support this groundbreaking initiative from Keane and Island Records by being the first retailer to stock such a release.

“It fits perfectly with our stated aim of giving fans the widest possible access to music and entertainment products across all platforms, however and whenever they wish to buy them – in-store, online and digitally.â€

The USB stick, which Island says is the world’s thinnest flash drive, will be manufactured by Kingmax and sold exclusively through HMV in the UK from October 30.

It's actually a very clever idea. The CD single only has about a year left before it gets scrapped entirely. This could work!

AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

WHY SHOULD WE ALL HAVE TO RELY ON PCS TO ENJOY MUSIC NOWDAYS?!?!?!?!

I hope to god that someone doesn't think them things will replace CDs.

Hah - they said that about vinyl in the late 80's...

Weird lol!!! If it goes in the bargain bin, I'll get it for the memory stick :-)

Hey, what a pretty cool way to get a cheap 512mb memory stick....!!!  They usually set you back about £20 or more....

I know. If I didn't have one already and buy and just wipe it straight away

OMG! £3.99 for a re-usable USB stick! :o I'm gonna be at least two

:o That's a very innovative idea actually.

The trouble is it sounds good in practice but the single will probably go to number one as a result of everyone wanting memory sticks on the cheap if they're chart eligible...

Clever idea, but I agree that I'm gonna miss singles. And 'Nothing In My Way' is an awesome song :)

They won't be scrapped  But speaking of vinyls they'll definitely NEVER be scrapped as how would DJs get hold of music to play?

I'm a big fan of Keane though and like this idea and shall be buying it ^_^ and will continue buying CD singles until I die :D

Bargain (for a memory stick). You can get them a lot cheaper than £20 these days, but £3.99 is better than anything I've seen.

Get used to it, I reckon this will catch on to be honest, if it does it will kill the CD single market forever, unfortunately I see CDs been phased out in the near future, give it another 2-3 years. I know some people prefer the physical format, but I can't see it getting any better, if people are downloading more than buying.

it isn't an eligible format. Only CD, cassette and vinyl are eligible physical formats, with permanent digital downloads and mobile phone downloads being the other eligible formats.

Good way of getting a memory stick though, as people have said. I was gonna buy a 512MB stick, but they are about £18 in Argos. I may as well hold on and see if I can buy a copy from HMV!

i'm buying it to....if more artists do it it will catch on cause people will buy it for the stick not for the music
