I think people realise, it's had over 100m streams ww. It's just not as accessible of a song as the ones he's got going in the charts at the moment.

That's b/s. I've heard "Rockstar" a handful of times and just listened to "Deja Vu" and it sounds a hell of a lot more 'accessible'. If this had been added to playlists in place of "I Fall Apart" post-"Rockstar" reaching #1, it would be top five now.

It's interesting because I'm a fan of all the songs you have mentioned here and on first listen I only thought 'Hurtin Me' would be a hit. I did also think 'Bestie' could do well if it got promotion, but I'm still in the mind-set of thinking success for these type of songs is the A-List on 1Xtra and maybe Radio 1 playlisting.

I think streaming has a lot to answer for - without generalising too much, I think fans of urban music are less likely to actually buy music and I think a lot of urban hits pre-Spotify explosion were heavily illegally downloaded. So the fact urban music tends to be popular on Spotify isn't a great surprise to me. I also think the success of UK artists such as Skepta, Stormzy and J Hus in recent years has made certain radio stations more open to backing this type of music. As you said, without J Hus I couldn't see a song like 'Unsigned' being big previously.

I do think this type of Hip Hop/R&B is a trend though, possibly stemming from the success of Trap Queen which ironically was hugely melodic. Without putting too much thought into it, I think songs like 'Shut Up' and 'Panda' which were both huge and long-running have opened doors for this type of music to be a success. However, considering the trend a few years ago was for Mustard beats I'm sure something else will come along soon.

You've definitely hit the nail on the head I think.

I also find it surprising that big rock bands aren't doing so well on streaming. When this all came into play, I expected popular touring bands such as Mumford & Sons, Kings of Leon, Muse, Foo Fighters etc. to light up streaming. Maybe even as far as bands like AC/DC, etc. Perhaps fans of these bands are just of the older generations on the whole and haven't crossed to streaming yet.

I'm a much bigger fan of 00s and 90s R&B/Hip-Hop and rock/indie myself, on the whole I'm finding both genres are going through a lull of quality and excitement.

Yeah I agree with both this and Mike's post, but what I can never work out is exactly why fans of R&B/urban music are much more likely to stream music instead of buy it, and why guitar based music never does well on streaming. I mean is it just an age thing? I know fans of rock music are a bit older in general, but there are still plenty of young people into rock music as well as pop/dance/R&B so I can never really figure out why rock is so under-represented on streaming compared to other genres.

I think generally speaking rock music fans are more likely to just buy the album to better support the artist rather than stream. Also, R&B/urban is a lot more mainstream than rock/indie especially now.

Without wishing to get too deep into stereotypes, I think many R&B/urban music fans generally don't buy because they don't have a whole lot of money.

Yeah, R&B and Urban fans are typically very young who are probably still in school or university so probably have very little cash whereas indie and rock are mostly adults who have money to spend I guess.

and the bias towards urban is much much more heavier in the US, 90% of the songs in the top 100 are urban, just checked billboard and this week's top 10 streaming is all urban

at least in the uk pure pop is doing better

I do think now is more reflective of what's popular though. When urban hits weren't charting it was easy for some people to go 'can't be that popular, didn't even go Top 40'. Now its harder for people to ignore.
Its reflective of whats popular in a particular demographic

Random question: Every time I've tried to play Rita Ora - Your Song I get "This song is not available".

Is that happening for anyone else? Is there genuinely a fault with it or is it just me?

I just tried and i can play Rita's Your song, but Im not in the UK, maybe it's a UK Spotify problem

how can Rockstar be song #3 starting from the bottom on hothits? thats bizarre

Spotify Top 200 (10/10)

Ouch at Noel Gallagher, down to #127 already lagging behind quite a few Liam Gallagher album tracks. Liam's week just got a lot better.

Also yay for CamelPhat back on the up! (#44). Also worth noting that Charlie Puth's new'n should go top 50 very soon, as will Sam Smith's. Maroon 5's new single is top 100 already too and new entries in the top 200 from Dave and NF.

Random question: Every time I've tried to play Rita Ora - Your Song I get "This song is not available".

Is that happening for anyone else? Is there genuinely a fault with it or is it just me?

Have you tried closing and re-opening spotify? If you purchased it on iTunes, close that too. I've found iTunes interferes with spotify for whatever reason and sometimes get the "this song is not available" randomly. Could be due to your computer/internet not connecting to the spotify servers briefly (not necessarily anything to do with your end, more so spotify's end).
