Commentary

 

It's hard trying to pretend there's an unpredictable battle for the EOY #1 when this is by far my favourite of the year. I even like it MORE than last year's EOY #1 ('Waiting For Love' by Avicii, so that's saying something). Everything about this song is just amazing though, it is fully deserving of taking the EOY crown. Initially climbing into the top 10 as a result of its appearance in BJSC (although I did like and chart the song even before then), it seemed like #9 would remain its peak for a while. However following the UK release of the song it rapidly grew on me again and ended up spending 12 weeks at #1, a joint record with 'Waiting For Love'.

 

It was a real summer anthem and very big on the charts and the radio which really helped it, and I'm still amazed that it was such a huge chart hit because it's such a standout unique song. Credit has to be given for Cookin' On 3 Burners for writing the song originally in 2009 but it is of course Kungs' reworking that really gives it the extra energy it needs. The trumpet breakdown may well be based on one single note but it works so well and gets me bopping every time. It has a very interesting chord progression and the sound overall is very refreshing for dance music in 2016 (even the retro-sounding vocals). Shame is all Kungs future releases will be held up to this impossibly high standard, and sadly he seems destined to have no future hits, but this is a proper 11/10 tune of life.

 

I still agree with all of that I said last year earlier this year, and at this rate it'll take even longer to get to my EOY #1 this year but that's what happens when so much goes into the presentation. I was sadly right about his future and he really didn't have a good 2017, other than this lingering around. 'More Mess' was, just that really and it failed to reach any higher than #82 in my chart. This will go down as one of my favourites of the decade though. Amazing.

Commentary

 

Serving as the 'bonus track' to Avicii's EP, this is a remix of frequent collaborator Sandro Cavazza's 'So Much Better', and as you'd expect Avicii really makes the song his own. It's not quite like anything he's done before, as it can neither fit into the long list of progressive house Avicii tracks or the more commercial pop leaning tracks, but of course that is by no means a bad thing. Sandro's vocals are pitched to the point where he is unrecognisable, but that oddly works for this personal song about longing for a lover that he cannot attain. The way he sings 'I could do so much better' at the top of his voice, Avicii's subtle but dancey production, it all makes for another brilliant track and when this is the standard of Avicii's non-singles then it further proves how he is the best.

Above & Beyond have a new album coming out next year so they are probably in for a big 2018. Sadly this song isn't part of that project as it's the best they've done in recent memory. It's a brilliant trance track which brought back their OceanLab project, that is A&B with vocalist Justine Suissa which you may recognise from their minor UK hit 'Satellite' in 2004. A&B have a habit of really bringing out the best in their vocalists, and this accompanied by orchestral production which effortlessly builds into a trance drop instantly caught my attention and unsurprisingly became a top 10 hit for me in the new year. They are amazing at creating trance beauties and I look forward to what more we'll see of them. For now we have the brilliant 'My Own Hymn' (a #14 hit) and 'Northern Soul' (yet to chart) which will appear on the album.

Following a bit of a quiet period for Jason Derulo in my chart I was hoping for him to get back to giving us borderline novelty urban hits like 'Wiggle' and 'Talk Dirty', and he did not disappoint with comeback single 'Swalla'. With the right dose of fun and a banging bassline it was enough for me to get into it, and then he hits us with the iconic 'shimmy shimmy' chorus. Such a lyrical masterpiece lmao. Ty Dolla $ign's verse I could give or take but Nicki really steps it up for her verse, although I'm not actually sure what the hell she's going on about. Follow-up single 'If I'm Lucky' wasn't that great so yeah please stick to the sexjams Jason. As for 'Tip Toe' that's basically 'Swalla' part 2 so I may get into that a bit more in 2018.

And we meet Jonas Blue again, and it was with 'Mama' that returned him to the very top end of the UK singles chart and unsurprisingly too. People may dismiss this as being generic but it is quite refreshing amongst the Chainsmokers knock-offs we got (Zedd). It has a very summery sound to it and as a commercial dance-pop song it very much works. The lyrics reassuring everything is going to be fine is something we could all do with and the melodic post-chorus breakdown really delivers. As I said earlier I'm hoping Jonas Blue can give us more goods in 2018 following 'We Could Go Back' which wasn't as dancey as his other singles.

It's been a huge year for Calvin Harris, he's actually got five songs in this year's Hot 100 and the first of these is an album track, which was the instant standout of the album excluding previous singles when I first listened to it, so annoyingly Calvin chose to not give this a single release. The song just sounds like summer with lovely tropical beach production from Calvin which sits well with Nicki's vocals (mostly sung but we do get a cool rap too). Now Calvin and Nicki is a collab we never have had before surprisingly and I was unsure how she'd carry a Calvin song by herself but with Calvin now going into an R&B direction it's like they were made for each other.

Commentary

 

I didn't think Martin Solveig would ever top 'Hello', though he came close with 'Intoxicated', then 'Do It Right' was released and that's now by far my favourite of his releases. It's got the right amount of fun in it and great punching synths in the drop, and such a good bassline throughout. I'm not excited about Tkay Maidza as a solo artist but she is great in this also, with memorable and catchy lyrics. It became one of those tunes for me that didn't get boring for ages and eventually spent 16 weeks in the top 10, a record for a #3 hit.

Probably one of my absolute faves of the decade, this. What a banger. It manages to rake up enough weeks in the chart at the end of its run to make it another year on the Hot 100, following its #6 position last year.

I still find Kendrick a fair bit overrated especially with the holier than thou vibe that his fanbase have but he made the best and biggest comeback he possibly could have with the anthem that is 'HUMBLE.'. With one of Mike Will's best productions including trap snares and piano riffs it was always going to appeal to me, but the rapping is some of the best I've ever heard from Kendrick too. And the video is one of the year's best. Deservedly became his biggest ever hit.

Following last year's #2 single of the year 'Piece Of Me' expectations were high for what MK was going to bring next... which were quashed when it turned out to be 'My Love 4 U' which could only reach #44 oops, but later on in the year he returned with '17' which instantly out-peaked that and has since gone on to be a lengthy top 10 runner. It's exactly the song I want from him with the big house production and piano riffs that I love MK for, alongside a great vocal line. Just a proper banger. Amazingly this became a top 10 for him in the UK which makes up for POM criminally just scraping the top 40 (though with good longevity). Expect this to make next year's chart too because of my rules, and probably much higher than #79 too.

One of the most unexpected comebacks this year was from Bakermat, a producer I initially thought would only ever have one hit but then 'Teach Me' happened, but 2017 was to become his biggest year yet with two entries in the Hot 100. The first of these is a reworking of 'Don't Leave Me This Way' simply entitled 'Baby'. I wasn't so sure of this at first and found the vocal a bit on the screechy side but it quickly grew thanks to Bakermat's banging house production and of course his trademark saxophone (we need more sax in dance music again like that glorious time of 2014). It sadly wasn't to be a UK hit single but it was used as background music on The X-Factor once or twice so I'll take that to mean it's had real life impakt. :D
