THAT'S RIGHT! I never expected this song to be quite this big on my chart when I entered it, and it did indeed break the record for longest climb to its peak, taking 26 whole weeks to reach #5 (it never got any higher). There is something about this just keeps me coming back though, the production is outstanding and that drop is insane. You might not think so but after 20 or so listens it is a proper moment. Alex Mills also does a good job of the vocal and the lyrics are somewhat interesting for a genre that doesn't rely on great lyricism, about however much we try there'll always be something in the way. Truly is deep house at its finest and I'm so glad to have discovered this. Still got it in the back of my mind for a future BJSC potential so you may be hearing more of this in 2018. Definitely recommend to anyone remotely interested in this sort of music, though I suppose you've already heard it if you have.

Some of you were probably hoping this would be top 10 here but it loses out by less than 20,000 chart sales, yes it really is still that close between positions! It also means Oliver Moldan is the only BJSC entrant of the year in the top 10. 'Saving Light' was of course the first song I sent to BJSC that actually won the contest, so it will always be a special song for that. It is surprisingly emotional for a dance song, even for trance being one of the more ~emosh sub-genres, moreso if you're also watching the music video - created in association with anti-bullying charity Ditch the Label. It's such a euphoric trance song that gets everything right, with an intense buildup, strong vocal and melody and a drop that does not disappoint. It made such a good first impression that it arrived straight at #1, a feat that was only managed by four songs this year (also 'Symphony', 'Instruction' and 'Without You'), all the more impressive for a non-chart act.

Commentary

 

If anyone owned the year of 2017 in my charts it was Calvin Harris, who had a constant top 40 presence all year long. Two of his songs make the year-end top 10 and this one just misses out. Deep into the funk wav era now I was very excited for what would become his new single, and a collaboration with three big name artists was always going to be intriguing, particularly Katy Perry who Calvin had not worked with before. It of course debuted very high, spending two weeks at #4 before the album release propelled it to #1 for six weeks. It's an incredibly catchy tune and you have to give Calvin a lot of credit for switching his style up and making it really work. The song is so groovy and it just has summer written all over it. All the parts work well, even Katy's odd pronunciation of the title which my mum thought was about fish. And apparently there are subtle Taylor digs in the song too, all the better! *_* I am so looking forward to what Calvin has in store for us in 2018, because in 2017 he really cemented himself as my second favourite artist of all time. No prizes for guessing my #1 favourite.

I Would Like is so so good, I think it's honestly become my favourite from her, where Lush Life got old for me very quick, I Would Like still sounds so good :wub:

Always Gonna Be is amazing too :wub: one of my highlights of 2016 and it really is, as you say, deep house at his finest, I loved his whole album too, and I just need new music from him!!

Feels :wub: :wub: so glad he managed such a huge hit from this era, and I'm excited to see what's to come from him this year with him leaving the Funk Wav sound behind. Yay at him appearing twice more in the top 10 too :cheer:

Commentary

 

Perhaps an odd choice of Calvin Harris song to put in my top 10 as it was only ever a promotional single (though it was his third-best performing song of the album on Spotify above 'Heatstroke' so at least there is that) but for me it is up there with his very best. We got a little taster of this a week prior to its release and ever since then I knew it was going to be something special. With Khalid being a rising urban star it made good sense for Calvin to include him in this project and he does a brilliant job here, his voice sounds so much mature than his actual age. The hook about rollin' on the freeway makes this an excellent driving song too and Future's verses compliment the production very nicely too. The instrumental parts are the best in the entire album and the song as a whole is so infectious. It sounds like it would age really nicely too, plus I would rank it above 'Slide' except that one had more time to rack up chart points so stay tuned to see where that ends up.

So it is actually the third time Calvin Harris has started off the year-end top 10, and I thought this year I'd do a little retrospective by ranking the previous top 10 hits. There is the general trend of the quality getting better as we get deep into the decade although 'Rollin' doesn't quite beat 'Sweet Lovin' for the title of best #10. 2010 particularly has a few shocking top 10 inclusions that wouldn't be near my top 10 if I re-did that chart so that year will probably be at the bottom for most of these.

Commentary

 

We see TheFatRat once again and 2017 was a brilliant year for him. In 2016 'The Calling' was the #4 single of the year and he gets another year-end top 10 hit in 2017 with 'Fly Away' which became his first #1 single, managing to sneak a week in-between 'Rollin' and 'Instruction'. The song has been described as trap but it's so different that I wouldn't class it as such, TheFatRat is a master of his own genre to be honest. If all you've heard of him are his BJSC entries then this is a different side to him and I would strongly recommend if you're into non mainstream dance. The airy vocals and unique production give this an otherworldly feel which I love. I've also been loving the

of this which propelled it back into the top 10.

Commentary

 

As with Calvin and TheFatRat, we also see Martin Solveig remain in the top 10, after last year's #6 'Do It Right' he places at #8 with... 'Places'. Which is even more impressive considering the song only peaked at #18 in the weekly chart and this isn't even the only song to out-do its peak in the year-end chart. What really helps here is the strong repeatability factor, with the song being rather subtle it was initially seen as a disappointment compared to the very instant 'Do It Right' but eventually saw some UK chart success surprisingly which helped it rebound strongly in my chart. It was great to hear Ina's vocals on a dance track again too after 'How Deep...', and now with her on 'Breathe' perhaps she could appear highly in next year's chart too. The song doesn't have much to it lyrically but she really sells it, and more importantly the production is rather groovy and just further proof of Martin Solveig's brilliance. We're due a new single now :angry:

I Would Like is so so good, I think it's honestly become my favourite from her, where Lush Life got old for me very quick, I Would Like still sounds so good :wub:

Always Gonna Be is amazing too :wub: one of my highlights of 2016 and it really is, as you say, deep house at his finest, I loved his whole album too, and I just need new music from him!!

Feels :wub: :wub: so glad he managed such a huge hit from this era, and I'm excited to see what's to come from him this year with him leaving the Funk Wav sound behind. Yay at him appearing twice more in the top 10 too :cheer:

I'd still rank Lush Life above it but both are so strong.

I know it was released in 2016 but it's definitely a 2017 song for me. So so good, nothing else on his album comes close. Some new music would be great though.

It was great seeing Feels become a genuine huge hit for him, glad he got at least one from the era (well 'Slide' was rather big too)

 

Feels just missing out on the Top 10 :( Definitely one of the best songs to hit #1 officially this year! although I can't comment since it just missed my weekly Top 40

Slide beating Rollin’ was unexpected too, although as you said it has had more time to pick up sales. Now that the album has been out for a while I can safely say Rollin’ is a favourite, despite not being too keen on it at first. I liked Feels but it got old for me really quickly unlike Slide, Rollin’ and even Faking It :P

Commentary

 

We finally reach the highest of Calvin's five appearances in the Hot 100 and it is 'Slide' which peaked at #7 and is the tracking year's 7th biggest selling song. It has a thing for the number seven. It's a brilliant song anyway, even if it took its time. Debuting at only #37 it was seen as a disappointment for a Calvin Harris single but it slowly but surely worked its way up in my affections eventually spending 20 weeks in the top 20 including three separate appearances in the top 10. Yeah I wasn't initially sold with his transformation but damn this is a tune. Who knew Frank Ocean would somehow work on a dance track? He's still hella overrated by the way but yeah. Migos really improve it with their input too, their style works surprisingly well over a nu-funk beat and as for Calvin's input, I love those claps and the instrument that sounds like a distorted flute. This was a great start to a great 2017 for Calvin so it is fitting that it charts the highest in this countdown.

Now I never really got Future, his style of over-autotune mumble rapping with drab production never interested me, but this... this is proper amazing. With an immensely catchy hook, an amazing flute sample and all-round great production, this quickly grew on me and refused to age for quite a while. The lyrics are basically standard for the genre, with Future bragging about how rich he is and all the drugs he's doing, and it's not really something I should love, but I can't deny a song this good. Definitely a standout of the recent takeover of US rap.

Another one of my chart oddities here is that the fifth biggest selling song of the year reached no higher than #17, but it takes full advantage of its release date and amazing longevity. With 27 weeks spent in the top 40, only three songs spent longer within the tracking year. Its whirling synths, outstanding production and overall repeatability factor made this undoubtedly one of my tunes of the year though. Seemed to be only me who loves it this much though, y'all are sleeping on it. Well it is very much a grower anyway. This alongside 'Won't Stop' made Watermät one of the essential dance producers of the moment and I'm very excited for new music from him in 2018 if it is to come. If you loved 'Bullit' then deffo give this a play.

Martin Jensen had a great 2017 getting himself a worldwide massive hit with 'Solo Dance', though he remains a one-hit wonder both in the UK and in this chart as follow-up 'Wait' suffered from being too similar to this and not half as great. With lyrics about wanting to party alone it's quite relatable and the production really pulls off the generic commercial tropical house sound well, it's so upbeat and catchy and so unsurprisingly ends up very high on my chart. You can't deny a tune like this.

Commentary

 

Clean Bandit really impressed me with 'Rockabye' so naturally I was excited for the follow-up, and they only went and delivered a true 13/10 life anthem in 'Symphony'. Instantly debuting at #1 and spending eleven weeks there, it is easily this year's biggest #1 single on the chart, but that is not enough to make this year's EOY #1, and it's not even close. With lush vocals from Zara (:basil:) and beautiful lyrics, alongside amazing production which includes Clean Bandit strings at their best, it truly lives up to its name. I was so pleased to see this get a week at #1 in the UK, but it really deserved the chart run that 'Shape Of You' got.

So this year's #1 will either go to Jax Jones (feat. Raye) or Oliver Moldan (feat. Jasmine Ash). Two massive songs in my chart but only one was my favourite of 2017.
