Parachutes Review

***** Classic

Don't Panic ***

Album opener, 4th Single in Europe, this seems a bit of an afterthought, tbh. I like the lyrics (We live in a beautiful world) and gentle strumming guitars.

Shiver ****

Brilliant track, Barrowman plays the electric guitar to good effect throughout, producing a good central hook. Chris's voice sounds strained in parts, showing the effort he puts into singing the track.

Spies ****

A gentle acoustic track, and one of the finest moments on the album. I imagine myself listening to this by a hazy river in the height of summer.

Sparks **

Another acoustic number, typical of the Parachutes album. No real distinguishing features.

Yellow *****

Classic Coldplay, and thier breakthrough song. The title was inspired by the Yellow Pages, as Chris needed a word to go with the two syllable note after 'it was all...........'!! This is the closest thing to a catchy song in this understated acoustic album.

Trouble *****

The standout track on Parachutes, imo. The simple beautiful piano hooks are so emotional and enveloping. At its core, a song about being trapped. Stunning.

Parachutes **

30 seconds of not much, and a lead into High Speed

High Speed *****

This track has always been a highlight of the album for me - heartfelt lyrics, sweeping guitars, a rush of emotion. Sublime.

We Never Change ***

Another typical acoustic Coldplay track. Nothing too special.

Everything's Not Lost ****

Brilliant end to the album, an optimistic finale.

Any comments? I have never written a review for a whole album before.

Nice review Matt. :D

Kept short and sweet and got down to the point straight away instead of going into loads of detail. ^_^

Politik *****

Immediately this tune shows how Coldplay have matured from Parachutes. Inspired by the War On Terror, it is a relentless bleak but beautiful tune. Classic.

In My Place ***

Chirpy Coldplay! Kept off the top of the charts by Darius :manson: Tbh, not one of my favourites, mainly due to over playing. Distinctively Coldplay, however.

God Put A Smile Upon Your Face ****

This track is stunning - simiar in pace to Politik, it has the AROBTTH sound to it. Excellent lyrics and Barrowman shows what a great guitar player he is. Rousing chorus - with the plaintive 'Your guess is a good as mine'

The Scientist *****

Brilliant video, where Chris somehow manages to sing backwards (as he is walking backwards and singing forwards in the video - confusing, no?). Onto the song, one of the quieter tracks on the album, with acoustic guitar and piano used to melodic effect.

Clocks *****

Easily the best on the album for me, Clocks connected the second I heard it. Reminsicent to Trouble with its waves of piano and the rousing crescendo building upto the climax and chorus. Stunning and beautiful.

Daylight **

Rather plodding tune. Nuff said.

Green Eyes **

Was written with one of Chris's ex's in mind. Since hes been with Gwynnie, he says he will never sing it live again. Handy that, its rubbish!

Warning Sign ****

Cute little tune! Chris cries how he misses you so, it sounds a bit like Parachutes era Coldplay.

A Whisper **

Saved from obscurity by its passable chorus and melody. Still too jarring in parts though.

A Rush Of Blood To the Head *****

Just when you think all is lost, this epic tune comes along to save the album. Sweeping and gloriously melodic and quietly poingnant in parts. The theme is again the War on Terror, blaming impulse for rash decisions.

Amsterdam ****

Good end to the album, the song builds to an excellent climax. Good stuff!

Again, feel free to comment!

Amazing Reviews Matt!

Except I Love Green Eyes

I shall do my reviews soon :D

Excellent reviews too, Peter, but I disagree with some of your opinions on X&Y. I will do mine later, and see how I get on :D

X & Y Review

*** Good

**** Really good

***** Classic

Square One ****

Opens with a siren call - perhaps to indicate how excellent the whole album is? The song is smooth and is all about going back to the start if you want to. Superb opener.

What If? *****

A gentle track, excellent lyrics and relentless chorus. Brilliant.

White Shadows *****

Maybe You'll Get What You Wanted? muses Chris, in what is possibly the best track on the album. Brilliant electric guitar work from Barrowman.

Fix You ****

A bit of an anthem, and rightly so. A stadium favourite.

Talk *****

Borrowing from Kraftwerk's Computer Love, with the lyrics replaced by guitar, this is one of the best Coldplay songs ever. The video is amazing, and pretty funny, and ends with them being eaten by a giant 1930s robot!

X&Y ****

Ending the first half of the album, a quiet tune, flows along beatuifully.

Speed Of Sound *****

Reminiscent of Clocks and Trouble, this is a piano led tune, and the lead single from X&Y. Damn the frog!

A Message ***

Good, but a tad forgettable.

Low *****

The deepest and most emotional song on the album. All is not lost, even if you are down. Superb.

The Hardest Part **

The much maligned Hardest Part. The video was terrible, and the song is OK.

Swallowed In The Sea ***

Another slightly forgettable song.

Twisted Logic ***

Great melody and lyrics.

Til Kingdom Come ****

Easily one of the best hidden tracks ever. A wonderful end to the album.

Nice review again Matt. ^_^

Your right about The Hardest Part. :( I feel it wouldn't have so much hate if it weren't for that video though. :(

Swallowed In The Sea ***

Another slightly forgettable song.
