Which subgenres of dance will be popular in Europe in general?

 

Will dance make a comeback in the US charts?

 

I think in the UK tech house and deep house will continue its revival, especially if Disclosure are rumoured to be coming back to making music this year. The success of 'Cola' may also provide a template for a similar style of futuristic sounding tech house to make the charts this year.

 

I think in Europe in general tropical house and future bass will finally come to an end in terms of popularity. What will replace them, I am not sure. Maybe a trend of eclectic retro influenced dance following the success of 'Katchi'?

 

Dance won't make a comeback in the US charts I don't think. They seem to be back to their pre-10s mix of urban and country.

 

What are your predictions?

I'd LOVE a Disclosure return, but nothing has been confirmed and it all depends on how long the guys decide to take a break for.

 

Garage is definitely a subgenre to keep an eye on. It's never really gone anywhere tbh, just hasn't been *as* popular, but more artists are using it in production of late and a lot of songs are getting garage remixes.

 

I'd especially like to see more dance 'hits' in the Top 40, they've been few and far between this year particularly towards the end of this year which has been a shame, with many not even making the Top 20! Only in the Top 40 at the moment are 'I Miss You', '17' and 'Silence'; 'Breathe' would be there without the Xmas tracks and I'm hoping that is a strong climber in the coming weeks (but, please let's not turn this into a discussion about Breathe :lol:).

 

Dance in the US is an interesting one. ODESZA's album went to #3 on the Billboard Top 200 in September which shows there is still a massive market for it and they've never really been a place for individual singles to thrive anyway.

 

Definitely looking forward to albums from Disciples and Clean Bandit (if it ever surfaces :rolleyes:). I hear Redlight is bringing out another album in 2018 too which will be fab as X Colour is amazing!

It would be excellent to see that come back! Would never have thought it may have a revival, there haven't been that many garage tracks playlisted on Radio 1 apart from 'On My Mind' by Jorja Smith and Preditah.

 

I can't really see a fully fledged Garage revival next year - even Craig David isn't making Garage music anymore.

Tbh I'm pretty sure I said last year to keep an eye on garage in 2017 and nothing happened so you're probably right :lol:

I could see tech house/general minimal house having a bit of a Moment next year cus I can see artists jumping on the success of songs like ‘Cola’ with incredibly catchy and repetitive vocals, even with songs like Patrick Topping ‘Be Sharp Say Nowt’ and George FitzGerald ‘Burns’ getting a bit of success shows a bit of a different side of dance music coming through so i Think next year could be interesting, but then again, like last year, I can see dance hits being few and far between which is a shame :(

That's if Calvin Harris goes back to making electronic dance music, rather than bringing out Funk Wav Bounces vol 2 which I would imagine would be more of his current R&B/funk sound.

 

I hope tropical house and future bass do fall out of favour as they have been dominant for too long and dance music needs to continue to progress.

It's been on rotation on MTV Dance for a few weeks now meaning its UK impact date is imminent.

This will also be the year tropical house and future bass really fall out of favour.

 

Needed, I have literally stopped listening to dance music for a few months now because of the overwhelming numbers of tropical house/minimal style dance tracks.

A few more Cola-like singles will be released, barely scraping the Top 40 without any high profile features. Everyone will try and copy Camelphat & Elderbrook but nothing will beat the #18 peak of Cola (or whatever it was)

 

Jax Jones’ next single will be another Instruction, Kygo’s next single will be another It Ain’t Me, and Marshmello’s next single will be another Silence. All will go Top 20 and I’d put bets on collaborations from Ariana Grande, Jess Glynne, and MNEK.

 

Speaking of, Clean Bandits next single will feature Jess Glynne and debut #1. The Sam Smith collab will also go Top 5 but with much less longevity and their album will obviously go #1.

 

Jonas Blue won’t have another hit for a while. Maybe something By Your Side sized in later Summer but a quiet year for him while he produces tracks on others albums (ie Craig David)

 

I feel as though Justin Timberlake could pull a Justin Bieber and rock up with a couple chart topping dance songs. Maybe not with Skrillex or Major Lazer, but a funky Daft Punk x Justin Timberlake could very easily blow up. Think Rock Your Body meets Get Lucky

 

With the increasing prominence of Urban acts, Dance will take a backseat prepared for an incredibly Dance-y 2019. Very few dance artists will breakthrough next year (less than 2017 :o)
