Exactly, there's always been some level of manipulation in the chart, now is no different. It's a good tactic from Matt Terry's management tbh, it's just a shame they botched the campaign and he performed a different song on X Factor. Sucker For You could've been a decent hit if that received the sales boost from a performance instead.

I know it's all "what if" but I don't think X-Factor would've helped SFY become much more of a hit. Perhaps scraping top 40 at best. The XF effect was so minimal this year.

No one said the charts were always perfect, but at least historically it was down to people willing handing over money for a song they wanted. Now you can chart by buying your way on to a playlist and not being offensive enough to be skipped.

No song goes top ten by that tactics though and in the end people don't remember much beyond that

So you're saying that record companies don't already have an influence what gets playlisted? There are people whose work is to have meetings with radio bosses to make sure their songs get airplay.

 

Of course but my point was aimed at songs that were doing well due to hot hits additions which they maybe wouldn't support otherwise.

I get why they had him perform Thing About Love, but they really should have had him perform Sucker For You. Would have most likely given the song what it needed to go top 40. Helps with the album advertising to say top 40 hit single.

 

The album has a few good other songs which would be good singles, not that they are likely to get the opportunity now.
