That's true, but then I see that as a valid reason to introduce airplay into the official chart ;) as radio plays are more alike to the sales chart than they are the streaming chart

Maybe I'm biased because the airplay chart frustrates me so much (What Lovers Do is still in the top 40 as well as a G-Eazy song that hasn't even hit the top 100, but not God's Plan, c'mon :P) but I feel like at some point we have to accept that radio just isn't quite a driving cultural force anymore, apart from triple j in its own niche but they never play a song more than 20 times in a week.

I think Bad Wolves will have the #1 downloaded track at about 3500-4000 sold. #50 on the actual chart is usually around 3500 chart sales I think.

Drake notches up an 11th week at #1 which makes "God's Plan" the 4th longest running #1 hit of the 2010s behind "Happy", "Shape Of You" and "Despacito". This looks likely to be the song's last week at #1, as Drake faces strong competition from...Drake. "Nice For What" has now taken up the streaming helm, and has reasonable sales, effectively usurping the positions of the prior single, so it looks likely to hit #1 next week. Seemingly gaining favour with the numbers lining up, "Love Lies" reaches #3 this week which is the highest Khalid has ever charted, while for Normani, it ties the peak of Fifth Harmony's "Work From Home". The next debut comes from Calvin Harris who had a slow start with streaming (taking 4 days to reach the Spotify top 50), and it's still catching up, but should hit the top 10 next week. Delta Goodrem also has a big climb to a new peak for "Think About You" thanks to a physical single release. She might also be helped by the fact that Spotify hadn't gotten Thursday's data in on time. It is not quite clear what ARIA do about this, but my best guess is that they just ignore it, meaning there might only be 6 days of streams this week. That also helps Bad Wolves finally crack the top 50, and the top 40 with their cover of "Zombie". While we're checking in on ARIA accuracy, there's a very belated debut for Cardi B's "Bartier Cardi", which should have debuted on release but...didn't. Also for all the previous discussion about "Flames", it seems like (probably because of the way it's tagged) it is not getting its Spotify streams counted. The moment it does get counted, it should shoot up into the top 50 but that also might never happen.

As expected, we have a new #1 album. Naturally it comes courtesy of Kylie Minogue, whose "Golden" becomes her 5th #1 album, all 5 of which occurred during the 2000s. It's been 8 minutes so there's a new Hillsong album, and it's the 3rd Hillsong Worship album to debut and peak at #2. "+" falls out of the top 10 this week, but we maintain the Sheeran quota because he features on the Elton John tribute album that debuts at #5. Alison Wonderland debuts 1 place lower than her previous album for a 2nd top 10, while Thirty Seconds To Mars get their 2nd top 10 album just narrowly. It's not quite clear at this point what next week's #1 album will be, but the top debut looks likely to be the first posthumously released album from Gurrumul.

"Love Lies" is doing really well in Oceania. I wonder if it picks up to that level over here.

Also fairly low debuts for Drake and Calvin compared to the UK!

Has George Ezra done anything in Australia - I see the album is down 18-33 - how did "Paradise" do? Were "Budapest" and "Blame It On Me" hits over there at least?

Paradise has only just gone Top 30 in iTunes in the past couple of weeks! Although as far as I’m aware he hasn’t had much/any sort of promo, not even radio plays I don’t think so it could still be a hit. Budapest was big but I can’t remember if Blame did much.

It annoys me how Zombie and Hurt Somebody have been the Top 2 on iTunes for nearly the past 2 weeks yet neither are Top 20 officially yet

  • Author
Yeah, Paradise is still climbing, hasn't quite cracked the top 100 yet but it's very close. He's only ever charted Budapest & Blame It On Me here but both were top 10 hits.
kylie's 1st album didn't go to #1 in australia? thats surprising
  • Author
She had the unfortunate timing of releasing on the same week as John Farnham's follow up to the 2nd highest selling album of all time in Aus, so 3 weeks at #2.

Edited by Dircadirca

Its such a shame that download sales have fell so hard recently. I still can't believe that Zombie #1 there. The overall chart is becoming very urban dominated thanks to streaming. I am loving Hurt Somebody and its picking up on streaming now so hopefully it can at least go top 10, I wonder if it can become a hit worldwide?

As expected, we have a new #1, and as expected, it's still Drake. "Nice For What" ends the 11 week run of "God's Plan" and becomes his 3rd #1 single. This is the 3rd time this decade that an artist has replaced themselves at #1, following Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and Justin Bieber. Spotify playlists can be partly attributed to this as "God's Plan" was ousted from Hot Hits Australia pre-maturely, which allows Post Malone to maintain an 8th consecutive week at #2. He still has a chance to get to #1 with the release of his 2nd album, but it also depends on how Ariana Grande maintains her sales & streams, as it looks very likely that "No Tears Left To Cry" will debut at #1 and become her first ever #1 single, the same circumstances as the most recent #1 debut from Sam Smith. Surprisingly not really in the picture is "One Kiss" which hits the top 10 this week but is already slowing down fast. Concerningly the highest Australian entry this week is only #35 but this week Amy Shark finally gets her 2nd top 50 hit, helped by the fact that this new single actually got proper Spotify playlist support. 5 Seconds Of Summer also get their new single in, and are looking at a big boost as "Black Skinhead" "Youngblood" is surprisingly top 20 on Spotify.

History is made this week on the album chart with Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu scoring a posthumous #1 debut, and his first ever #1. This is the first time that an indigenous language album has reached the top spot. Gurrumul was a blind indigenous singer who won over audiences with his beautiful singing voice, and his 2008 debut album achieved triple platinum sales. Sadly last year he passed away, and though it is an important tradition that the names and faces of deceased indigenous people are not to be printed or shown, his immediate family later decided that his impact on the music scene was too significant to be forgotten and have allowed his name to be printed again. Lower down, Cardi B is still without physical sales but impressively manages to climb up a spot into the top 5 on her 2nd week, while there are just two more debuts in the top 10, with Breaking Benjamin scoring their first ever top 10, and Jason Aldean his 2nd.

On the note of posthumous chart entries, next week we'll have more as per Avicii's untimely passing. His sole #1 hit "Wake Me Up" will be the highest entry, but worth watching will be "Levels" which originally peaked at #24 and could possibly score a new peak. "Without You", "Hey Brother", "Lonely Together", "Waiting For Love" and "The Nights" will also be potential re-entries.

terrible top 3 in singles with Drake > Post Malone > Drake

Well, it's certainly your best number 1 of the year so far

"Shape Of You" still top 30, mental! It really is a top pop song though. The polar opposite of the dire "Perfect"

  • Author
I'm thinking Shape might finally get hit hard this week. The influx of J. Cole & Avicii on the weekend bumped it out of the Spotify top 50 and it won't have an easy time returning with Post Malone around the corner. I worry about how slow Perfect is dropping out, seems like God's Plan is the only thing that can stop it from being the #1 seller of 2018, which is an immensely groanworthy thought

theres no ACR in Australia? or a cap or something?

can songs charts infinitely?

  • Author

Indeed, every song is on an equal playing field (ignoring playlistola ~) at all times. The only minor exception is that songs need to be selected by the labels to be tracked, so when a big new album comes out, it's often a coin flip as to whether or not the tracks will chart, often it's really arbirary like Kendrick's DAMN. having 3 debuts, but they weren't exactly the 3 biggest that week. You also often have Spotify hits that just aren't being noticed for some reason, so even though "Nevermind" is on top of Hot Hits Australia, and should even be in the top 50 streaming singles chart this week, it's curiously absent, and I've no idea if or when it will suddenly start charting.

("Flames" also still isn't getting its Spotify streams counted oops).
