After scoring her first #1 hit earlier this year, Ariana Grande now scores a 2nd with "thank u, next". Notably it has the biggest ever week for streaming with well over 20K equivalent sales. While her streams are starting to take big hits, she's still safely ahead of all competition and should get her first multi-week #1 ever, as all her #1 albums have also only spent 1 week there. The top 10 is relatively unchanged with minimal moves and only a re-entry to the top 10 as Billie Eilish gets her longest ever top 10 runner with "when the party's over", as despite its #5 peak, "lovely" only spent 1 week in the top 10. Halsey & Post Malone creep up slightly to new peaks too. I mentioned recently that Rita Ora had a top 20 hit-streak. You can now improve that to top 15 as she's gotten 4 top 15 hits in a row from "Your Song" to "Let You Love Me", none of which made the top 10. Queen improve from 1 top 50 entry last week to now having 3 this week, and they also get "Killer Queen" charting for the first time. This is however not enough to change the album chart standings as "A Star Is Born" rules the roost for 4 weeks now. It's been quite a busy week for new entries but the whole top 3 is effectively under the control of movie soundtracks. There's a serendipitous outcome from this however because the highest new entry comes from Imagine Dragons at #4. All four of Imagine Dragons' albums have peaked at #4. Following them is local legends Midnight Oil with a live album recorded last year during their comeback tour. Putting aside their incredible catalogue, Midnight Oil have a distinctive chart achievement as back in the mid-'80s their "Species Deceases" EP was the first ever #1 debut on the singles chart. For an act that the top of the singles chart is a foreign land, to the point that they've never had a top 10 single, Muse debut at #7 with their 8th album. They have previously hit #1 3 times, with "Black Holes & Revelations", "The Resistance" and "Drones", which coincidentally are the only albums of theirs which have had top 50 singles. Also down 6 places from their last album is Architects who last hit #2, and now score their 2nd top 10 debut, their first entry since the death of Tom Searle. Local singer-songwriter Ziggy Alberts debuts at #9 with his third album, but first to make the chart, and also in the top 10 is The Beatles' White Album. Michael Buble's "Christmas" is having a relatively slow start this year but I'm sure he's not too fussed as his new album looks to contend for #1. Mumford & Sons also look for a big debut, same going for The Greatest Showman: Reimagined which may or may not be combined with the original version. Little Mix & Mariah Carey should make the top 20 but I'm uncertain about top 10.
November 22, 20186 yr Tyga's "Taste" has been omitted from the chart for no reason I still can't believe this. Taste was robbed of probably a top 10 position for absolutely no reason. Right now it's #40 Spotify and #52 Apple Music still yet it never even graced the actual top 100 iirc
November 22, 20186 yr Author Yeah I wonder if through the power of streams, it could eventually overtake Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" as the biggest hit ever to not chart. It should perhaps be triple platinum at this point and I think Katy should be 6 times platinum, maybe more. The end of year chart is going to look really inaccurate though. There's also "OTW" which was missing streams for the majority of its chart run and might miss the top 100 list, and though I imagine most aren't too upset, XXXTENTACION is hugely misrepresented, "Moonlight" should be double platinum but never charted, "Jocelyn Flores" was left off for 10 months, and his album "17" has never had any of its streams counted so it only charted for 1 week (by comparison it's been top 40 in New Zealand since release). Tyga's other song "SWISH" probably should have been a minor top 50 hit in the chart for about 3 months, but nada.
November 22, 20186 yr Author Officially labels have to send a request to ARIA to let a song be counted. It's kind of a crappy hold out from the era when labels (mainly Sony) would deliberately delay entries so they'd have a more impressive looking debut. I recall Flo Rida's "Right Round" having a fake #1 debut because of it. Same thing happened with Baauer, but that was likely less intentional because "Harlem Shake" was released on an independent label. That's the current case for Tyga which is probably why he's not there. Songs with incorrectly counted streaming is not always easy to tell unless you're a chart nerd. There may well be a lot of bickering behind the scenes that we don't see  It's mostly just caused by lack of attention to detail, especially when metadata on different platforms isn't consistent. ("Dark Horse" was a different beast completely though. I'm fairly certain that it was just initially left out because it wasn't a single and was getting in the way of "UncondiSHONally", but once that sputtered out it wasn't clear that "Dark Horse" was gonna just keep on selling for months and months and months. Maybe they were worried it would have a crappy incomplete chart run but I'm sure it would have looked fine if it just charted when the video came out.)
November 24, 20186 yr Just had a peak at this weeks chart (the one that’ll be posted here next week) and WOW what a static chart. I think there’s maybe 2 or 3 notable climbs in the top 50? If that. It’s mostly good music even if Perfect is still there (????) but wow. To think people complain when the UK top 10 doesn’t have any changes week-on-week :kink:
November 24, 20186 yr Author Also two debuts in the whole top 100...both below #90 and one of them will vanish next week :P Edited November 24, 20186 yr by Dircadirca

Though her digital sales are relatively low for a #1 hit, there's still no real competition as the big sellers aren't doing too great on streaming. It's also hard for anything to challenge when nothing's happening on the chart, there's only 1 position swap in the whole top 11. It should be shaken up a little next week because with her album out and her in the country at the moment, Rita Ora will be getting her first top 10 hit in years with "Let You Love Me". There's only one new track in the whole top 50 with Zara Larsson's slow climbing "Ruin My Life" finally getting there. Things remain stagnant on the album chart too, with the "A Star Is Born" soundtrack logging a 5th consecutive week at #1. It fends off Michael Buble who incidentally debuted at #3 behind Lady Gaga's "Joanne" with his last album before climbing to a #2 peak next week. He's had 8 albums reach the top 2 now, 5 of them at #1. The perpetual presence of his "Christmas" album also appears to be waning, as for only the 2nd time ever, it's not yet in the top 10 on the last November chart. The answer to me wondering how The Greatest Showman: Reimagined will be treated is answered as it's separate and so now there are 2 of them in the top 10. It is tough to accept that if you are interested in seeing contemporary recording artists in the top end of the chart, then Michael Buble & Mumford & Sons are your fleeting bastions. On Mumford & Sons, their 4th album nets their worst debut to date entering at #5. They reached the top 2 with their 3 prior albums and even entered higher at #4 with their debut album which would later climb to #1. Little Mix also return with their 5th album which maintains a perfect track record of top 10 peaks, though at #8 it falls a bit short of the #2 peak of their last 2 albums. There's not much to note in the way of new entries next week. Missy Higgins has a Best Of which might do alright, and Rita Ora at the very least started the week at #1 on iTunes but I'm not confident she'll make the top 10. The ARIA Awards are also on tonight which is probably the worst night of the week to hold them considering streaming impact will largely go uncounted, but maybe it'll help some artists along.

If it ever seemed like she was looking close to being overtaken (she wasn't), with the video out, she's back on the upswing with no real fresh competition so "thank u, next" is certainly getting a 4th week and probably plenty more. The ARIA Awards were last week but the combination of being on Wednesday night and nobody really caring about them, it's hard to really tell anything much happened. Maybe the best beneficiary in a tangible sense is Rita Ora who was obviously there as she is a noted proponent for Australian music [citation needed], but "Let You Love Me" becomes her 4th top 10 hit, and 2nd highest ever charter, only behind "I Will Never Let You Down". Once again it's a slow week, last week we had 2 debuts in the top 100, this week it's upgraded to 4, though one of them is a Billie Eilish single so belated in its chart debut that it's already been certified platinum. Higher up though her not-hot cover of The Offspring "come out and play" becomes her 4th top 50 hit. Also making the top 50 is Hilltop Hoods with the 2nd single for their upcoming album, and it's already outpeaked the first single "Clark Griswold" (which won an ARIA Award). I refuse to acknowledge or even listen to the other debut at this stage. "A Star Is Born" is #1 for a 6th week in a row, which ties it up with "Divide" as the 2nd longest running #1 of the year. It'll need 8 weeks to match "The Greatest Showman". It is very on trend being a movie soundtrack because that's all that anyone is interested in right now, Queen have 3 of the top 5. If that's not monotonous enough for you, there are also now 2 Michael Buble albums in the top 10, and 2 Greatest Showman albums. The only new entry in the top 10 is a Greatest Hits set for Missy Higgins. Notably her first 3 albums all hit #1, the first of which was one of the highest selling albums of the 2000s. If you'd been living in Australia at the time then this will sound familiar and hit close to home. Despite what we were told in the Friday Predictions thread, Rita Ora did not make the top 10, however "Phoenix" lands at #14 which is 10 places higher than her first album. If you were a fan of Australian reality television based music shows in 2012, then you'll be delighted to know that The Voice 2012 winner Karise Eden, and X Factor 2012 winner Samantha Jade are here with new albums. Next week's only noteworthy competition will be from The 1975 who hit #1 with their 2nd album and have quite the fanbase though only barely scraped the top 100 once this year with "Give Yourself A Try". It will certainly be rather frontloaded as it's down to #30 on iTunes.

Clean Bandit 49 43 328 01 THE VERY BEST INXS 50 41 233 01 X Ed Sheeran With no trouble in sight, Ariana Grande is #1 for a 4th week running. Halsey scores her 2nd #2 hit for the year perhaps thanks to severe lack of fresh competition at this stage. With thanks to the Skrillex remix which ARIA have miraculously probably counted correctly, "SICKO MODE" returns to its original peak of #7. You will also be shocked to learn that "Sweet But Psycho" is Ava Max's first ever top 10 hit. Christmas music is in full force but of course due to a multitude of factors one of which is surely that it's summer here, Australia is not as enthusiastic as the UK. Things are moving along more so than last year however, Mariah Carey & Wham! have both re-entered the top 50 this week and are slightly higher than last year. The naff Buble song might also be in there but ARIA have never counted it since it debuted at #89 back in 2011, I cannot say that I mourn the loss although it would be nice to help push "Perfect" out of the top 50. In turn though, it looks like Ariana Grande is primed to get "Santa Tell Me" into the top 50 for the first time ever in 2 weeks time, it re-enters this week for the first ever time since charting on release. Also in classic ARIA muck up land, sales and streams of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" have been combined into the 2014 version of the song even though the two have separate chart runs. Back to the top 50 though, 6ix9ine has two top 50 entries, curiously in the opposite order to how they ranked in the UK, while Meek Mill gets his first ever top 50 entry. "A Star Is Born" is #1 for 7 weeks, which is longer than either of Lady Gaga's last 2 albums spent in the top 30. The top 10 continues to read as a paired up series of 'I couldn't care less' but we do make space for a new entry from The 1975 at #4. Perhaps with a better timed release they could have scored their 2nd #1 album. The poorly timed ARIA Awards means that Amy Shark just now returns to the top 10 with her album. Preemptive warning for people who get irrationally offended by easily avoidable music because the next 3 debuts are all from rappers. Incidentally due to charts being very difficult to make accurate or something, 6ix9ine is completely absent from the top 100. Feel free to flip a coin as to whether or not XXXTENTACION will get the same treatment next week.

The top of the charts is remarkably stuck in place, not aiding this in any way is iTunes promoting its top selling singles of 2018...in order of their current sales, meaning "Shotgun" is #1 on iTunes again but lagging behind far too much on streams to really challenge the top spot unless sales get really high. Mark Ronson acquires his 2nd credited top 10 hit, and Miley her 8th as the streams for "Nothing Breaks Like A Heart" are now being credited correctly (note: I don't think it should have debuted in the top 10 but certainly it should have been higher). There is absolutely nothing new to the top 50 although at a stretch you could attribute "Lost In Japan" in the top 50 due to its remix for the first time, except I wouldn't because the original version is outpacing it on sales and streams. There could have been new entries courtesy of XXXTENTACION's posthumous album except ARIA have completely overlooked it. Hurrah you say because of personal disdain for him, but on the other hand, it just means 6ix9ine is erroneously in the top 50 instead, and meanwhile ARIA's extremely selective entries for Christmas songs (Buble, Williams, Sinatra etc notably absent), has included "Happy Xmas" which hasn't charted since the early digital days about 10 years ago, as produced by noted convicted murderer Phil Spector. I do however suspect that it didn't quite do enough to chart prior to this year in the streaming age. ARIA lists it as a #66 hit but it was a #9 hit in the 1970s before ARIA was established. It's unfortunate for The Greatest Showman as in the nick of time it looks to be unseated as the longest running #1 album of 2018, "A Star Is Born" has just matched it for 8 weeks at #1 and I see no reason it can't get another week. Sticking out like a deceased thumb in the top 10 this week is XXXTENTACION who scores a 2nd top 10 album with "Skins" (because "17"'s streams were never counted), which I suspect just like last week's obligatory contemporary album from The 1975, doesn't plan on sticking around for the long haul. Most of the Christmas albums here have been around for a while but rising to a new peak of #12 is David Campbell of 'being Jimmy Barnes' son' fame. New releases are unsurprisingly sparse but we shall see how ZAYN does in following up his #1 album. At the very least he'll surely outdo Lukas Graham who hit #1 the week after him.
December 19, 20186 yr Author What was AIWFCIYs peak in the ARIA chart? #2 in year of release, #6 in the re-entry era from last year.
December 22, 20186 yr I have just seen on the new Australian singles chart, of the 4 Do They Know It’s Christmas versions, it is Band Aid 30 that has re-entered at #37! I am guessing the fact it is the most recent has helped it, but still surprised it is getting attention anywhere after how quick it dropped globally after release.

I am guessing the fact it is the most recent has helped it, but still surprised it is getting attention anywhere after how quick it dropped globally after release.See Dirca's posts above ;) It's not that the Band Aid 30 version is popular, but that ARIA have a habit of mis-labeling versions. At the moment, the original is #28 on Spotify (no other versions are top 200), and on iTunes: 39. Original 198. Band Aid 30 321. Original 339. Original 429. Original 934. Band Aid 20 So probably at least 90% of its units are coming from the original.
December 22, 20186 yr So they're just combining all the versions together?? The OCC don't do that I'm sure, though the other versions have negligible sales here anyway.
