Great chart Pop!!

Wham for 3 years in a row - the equilivant of One More Sleep these days!! Such a culturally defining Xmas hit these days it's no surprise to see it at no1 3 christmases in a row. I assume christmases after the songs got better as you heard them more! George Michael could write a great song!!

Lol at the Spitting Image track - I just knew it because it's usually on totp 2 at Christmas - seemed to be a quick cash boost after a summer no1 single, bit like the Cheeky Girls from a different era, not really a classic!!

Human Leagues follow up to Human doesn't seem to have floor much traction - haven't seen it on totp yet!

Hi Steve!

Yes, back in the 70's and 80's I got very nostalgic for recent xmas songs and there were so many classics coming out, I loved Xmas and the whole holiday thing TVfest, records, family indulgence and prezzies, cos all I had to do was by a few gifts and turn up. Nowadays the whole thing is a huge stress, organising and doing so much that I wish I could run away to a tropical island for a month! Still like fresh xmas songs though, and tend to go for the newer ones or more obscure ones still, give or take Chris Rea

Playing Spitting Image now, it's not funny, what was I thinking! Must have been pissed when I compiled that chart! And I didn't drink in those days  Red Dwarf writers wrote the lyrics (I love them) and Philip Pope did the music as per usual for Spitting Image - I never forgave him for the Hee Bee Gee Bees pisstake given his own records are so dreadful!

Human League utterly chose the wrong follow-up to Human - the obvious next single was the fab Love Is All That Matters, which didn't get released until 1988 by which time they'd lost the impetus and Jam & Lewis had been overtaken by other dance genres.

30th December 1986

It's the final chart of 1986 and Madonna is back up on top for a second week on top. Notably Shaky & Chris De Burgh's christmas classics scraped into the 40 for me, and A Spaceman Came Travelling has peaked higher this christmas in 2018 in my charts than back in the day, while Merry Christmas Everyone was getting a second bite of christmas chart action in a row. Cameo reach a new career chart peak of 2 with Candy, and Gregoray Abbott gets his only moment in the top 10.

Elkie Brooks goes top 20 for the first time in 3 years, 9 years after her first time, Bad Company for the first time in 11 years with This Love, snuggling up to Is This Love, Alison Moyet's climbing hit. To which the answer from those who hounded her off twitter in 2018 for asking people to be nice to women and listen and support their needs is a resounding "no". Paul Simon makes it 2 top 20's in a row for the first time in about 13 years, Elton & Cliff also add to their extensive run of top 20's, 1971 and 1968 respectively, with a song no-one remembers but which was quite pleasant.

Iggy Pop gets his first ever top 40, 13 years later than one might have expected, but got there in the end. Highest new entry is Eric Clapton's cover of his bandmate's non-hit, Behind The Mask was big in my charts for Greg Philinganes, and Eric's version was pedestrian to my ears, but fine to anyone who hadn't heard the superior original. Latin Quarter return with a 3rd song, Barclay James Harvest adapt to the end of Prog Rock by charting in the 80's after stiffing in the 70's, Vesta Williams has a decent dance song, Go West don't cover Cyndi, this song has an extra "u", Lionel Richie tries a ballerina, presumably dancing on the ceiling, and Sheena pops in with a Christmas record no-one has ever heard, except those that have seen Santa Claus: The Movie. As I've not heard it in 32 years I can't comment whether that is fair or not...until I just played it. So 80's, so dreary. I liked Sheena. The only reason it charted!

Didn't realise it was Sheena Easton on that Santa Claus The Movie track and I hear it every year when I watch it!!

Interesting to see new Nik Keeshaw in the chart haven't heard much of him on totp since 1984!!

Must check out the Communards track as it wasn't on totp over the course of December!

John, you didn't include some big hits of my chart.

Catherine Stock - To Have And To Hold

Kim Wilde - Schoolgirl (possibly because this single wasn't released in UK)

My second favourite from all her singles, only behind "You Came".

Also Stacey Q's 'Two of Hearts' probably should have been a hit in the UK in 1986, it was a big hit in America but only flopped at #87 in the UK.

Hi Steve,

My mate was a huge Sheena fan at the time, so I was kept well up-to-date on her movements!

Nik Kershaw is always busy doing something, he was well on his way to Chesney Hawkes and Let Loose hitmaking as his singles stalled in 1986/7 B-)

cheers!

John

Hi Alex, I dont remember that Catherine Stock track, but these charts are what I liked at the time - so that's why that Kim Wilde album track didn't chart - I didn't let album tracks in my charts in those days, very annoyingly! If I could turn back time....! would have had an Abba invasion of tracks from 1977 onwards through 1982

Hi Snakey,

yes that was a good track, it def made my charts - it might have even done it twice, once on a remix if I'm recalling it correctly (I may not be!)

Even in 2019 I don't include album tracks (for preventing the domination of one act in Ed Sheeran's style) in my chars, but "Schoolgirl" was released as single in some countries (Netherlands, Germany and Australia), so it's not against the rules of my chart.

From ABBA album tracks two my favourites (That's Me and When I Kissed A Teacher) were included in my chart, because both had the official videos (That's Me also was a single in Japan) and possibly ABBA wanted to release them as singles.

Hi Bjork, the release strategies of UK record companies back in the olden days was often a complete mystery to me. I've got a ticket to see Kim Wilde in December in Dorset - though I'm also supposed to be in London in the afternoon so it may be a very busy day! If I make it it'll be the 4th time, she's still fab! :)

You'll maybe see her on the train singing freestyle like last Christmas 😜

I must have missed that one! It's going to be a Xmas-themed family affair I think, more acoustic, as per her recent-ish xmas album, so very different from previous shows! :)

John, I will compile 1987 retrospective charts soon, so it was interesting to watch the second half of 1986 in your chart.

Some your # 1 hits even weren't represented in my top 20 chart (New Beginning, Papa Don't Preach, Take My Breath Away).

Glad to see Sandie Shaw - Frederick here, possibly it's her best track.

My highlights from last 4 months of 1986 year :

Lick The Tins - The Belle Of Belfast City [5 weeks at # 1]

Bucks Fizz - Keep Each Other Warm [# 1 on Christmas week]

Sarah Brightman and Cliff Richard - All I Ask Of You

Kim Wilde - You Keep Me Hangin' On

Samantha Fox - Hold On Tight

Debbie Harry - French Kissin' In The USA

From flopped UK singles I included Katrina and the Waves - Lovely Lindsey.

Hi Alex,

Glad you liked some of my charting tracks :D I don't know that Katrina track, I must admit (and I've seen her live in concert, so if she did it I must have forgotten it!). Good luck with 1987 I'll drop in on it with interest if you post, and thanks for resurrecting 1986 further up the pages  By the end of the month I will have completed 1984 through 1990 in this format, and 1983 needs re-presenting, along with finishing 1980 and starting on 1981/82 and I will have actually completed a decade! :cheer:
