4th June 1986

It's 2 weeks on top for Pet Shop Boys as Jaki Graham reaches a career peak of 2 with Set Me Free, and Tears For Fears Sports Relief-boosted re-record/re-mix pushes Rule The World into my top 10 for the 3rd time in a year. Pete Wylie gets a 3rd top 10, and Grace Jones goes top 10 again 6 years on, just ahead of eyt another classic soul/disco remix entering at 11 - this time Candi Staton's brilliant 1976 top 3 anthem Young Hearts Run Free. Fellow 1976 remix Can't Get By Without You also gives The Real Thing a second top 20 of the year.

Falco has Vienna Calling for a 2nd top 20, Nu Shooz shoot into the 30, and Janet Jackson turns Nasty and rockets into the 30 for a second hit. Prince enters at 36 with Mountains, a fab under-rated track in his Paisley period style, as Mantronix debut at 49 - only another 15 years or so to wait for a chart-topper for Kurtis Mantronik though. Freddie Mercury's Dave Clark musical title track enters just ahead of his own band's Movie song, at 64, presiding over an influx at the lower end: The Moody Blues are back again for a sweet 16 years of chart entries; Living For The City, probably Stevie Wonder's greatest record, is covered by DaBooks (formerly Cook Da Books); Freda Payne gets the Bonnie Tyler treatment; The Communards keep the singles coming; a bit of soul dance from Cashflow, a bit of Heavy Rock from AC/DC 8 years into a chart run; and BAD get a second chart entry.

'Disenchanted' is a great dance tune, very well produced! Pity it didn't do that well in the charts.

'Bassline' sounds good and a bit ahead of its time. It sounds more 1990 than 1986!

'Opportunites' is not one of my fave PSB songs, the lyrics kind of put me off it a bit, but the production is great.

I don't know that Icehouse song but 'Hey Little Girl' from 1983 is a great dance track!

Hi Queefy

Disenchanted has been kinda forgotten by the monster that followed it, a shame. I need to revisit Bassline havent heard it since 1986!

The lyrics to Opportunities arent what they seem to be on the surface - the boys are very socially aware and were strongly anti-Thatcher, it was a comment on the superficiality of Thatcherism, with an ironic twist on what they seemed to be doing themselves (but weren't - they are both accomplished musicians, and have never chased cash, they choose artistic integrity - not smiling in photos, going for singles the record company would prefer them not to - everytime. :) )

Icehouse 83 was fab!

It's 3 weeks on top for Pet Shop Boys as Bucks Fizz rocket up to 4, for 5 years worth of top 5 hits, with new member, local girl round these 'ere parts Shelley Preston replacing departing Jay Aston. Falco makes it 2 Austrian top 5 German-language hits, that's a first (and a last) for my charts. The Fab Nu Shooz track with that delicious instrumental track hits 9, just ahead of Sly Fox, still hoping to go all the way - get ready to be disappointed lads!

Highest new entry is a-ha, 4 top 40's and just pipped on a top 20 at 21, a spacious and epic ballad this time showing they can do sweeping strings beautifully. Bananarama take Venus into the 30, Eurythmics enter at 26 When Tomorrow Comes, a bit flattering for a lesser single I think these days, and Haywoode is back at last with Roses getting the recognition it deserved first time round. In at 30, a beautifully amusing I Wanna Be A Cowboy, complete with the late Metal legend Lemmy in the video.

At 32 it's the 3rd version (and not the last!) of The Locomotion to chart, as Dave Stewart (not Eurythmics Dave Stewart) and Barbara Gaskin fail to what they did 5 years earlier with It's My Party (top the UK charts). Little Eva was a reissued top 3 hit in 1972, Grand Funk made my top 30 in 1974, and Kylie wasn't that far away. Lovebug Starski brings some 80's novelty horror rap into the charts, Wham! are back for the last official single at 39, The Edge Of Heaven EP, and Prince, Smiths and Big Audio Dynamite all make the 40.

Sigue Sigue Sputnik refers to T.Rex, but essentially repeats the first hit to much-less success and credibility, in at 46, and at 56 Marc Almond is back with a Cher cover, all melodrama, as both do well. Midge Ure slips in The Call Of The Wild, Queen under-perform everywhere with Highlander track Friends Will Be Friends, which remains one of the more memorable ballads they did, Mr. Mister get a 3rd entry, somehow, Suzanne Vega has another goodie Left Of Centre, and finally The Housemartins follow like Sheep, bursting with future success cos it's Happy Hour!

'Twenty First Century Boy' is very good but maybe not quite as good as Love Missile. At least it was another electronic dance tune in the charts back then.

43 ( 31 ) YOU KEEP ME HANGIN’ ON Diana Ross & The Supremes

Funny this charting on your personal chart when there will be another version of this song later on in the year! :o

Haven't heard it much before 'Vienna Calling' sounds great. Listening to it, I can't help thinking that perhaps it was a bit of an inspiration for 90s eurodance acts like The Real McCoy with the rapped part in the verses followed by the big chorus!

Edited by The Snake

Pet Shop Boys is a fairly fitting no1 for the stage of the 80s Thatcherite counter revolution we were at!

Hi Snakey B-)

21st centruy boy wasnt as genre-defying as Love Missile, but fun enough :) Yes that Supremes reissue must have been either an inspiration for Kim's version, or else Motown knew it was on the way and got it out early - they were always hot on marketing their back catalogue in the UK!

Vienna calling was fab and one I dont think I ever managed to find in the bargain bins! Never pops up on compilations either, which is annoying!

Aul Jay Aston is just  even now at 57!

She just still looks fab doesn't she though! I can't believe she was on Buzzcocks mystery popstar panel some years back and the panel was struggling to guess which one was in Bucks Fizz. I mean I was literally shouting at the TV, "it's her because it's Jay Aston and she's been on Top Of The Pops a hundred times!"

Talking of Bucks Fizz.....

18th June 1986

It's a first week on top for Bucks Fizz Mark 2, giving them a 5th and final chart-topper, as Wham! are shooting up into the 20 for the final time (with a new single), while highest new entry is 1985's back-again Bangles track, the fab Katrina & The waves cover Going Down To Liverpool - which I did several times a year in those days to pick up my grandma or visit.

Bowie's back with another movie song - though not exactly in the same musical league as Absolute Beginners, the film is very much better remembered than Ab Beginners - Labyrinth. The Housemartins get a first top 40, and booze it up, while Genesis scrape another 40, and Marc Almond adds to his list too. Madonna also returns with her best record to date, a creative step up, the fab Papa Don't Preach.

Matt Bianco havent covered Martha Reeves it's a new jolly tune, 80's dance chart-topper Dhar Braxton enters, Art Of Noise drag Max Headroom in and the result isn't quite the same standard as Duane Eddy, but fellow 50's rocker Little Richard also pops in with a very 50's-sounding revisit of his old sound. That leaves INXS with a second fab funkrock entry, Listen Like Thieves.

Dhar Braxton's song might just be the first house hit to make the top 40. Not sure if it is quite house but certainly sounds very close to it. It is quite a tune, and she has a great jazzy voice!
New Beginning (Mamba Seyra) is probably my favourite Bucks Fizz song. I like the multiple drum sound on it. Jay Aston auditioned on The Voice in 2013 but none of the judges turned around so she didn't have a 'new beginning' that time.
Yep that Bucks Fizz song sounds good, it does have rather epic production which is a bit reminscent of the Frankie Goes To Hollywood 'Relax' instrumental in parts.

Hi Snakey, I have to admit I'd totally forgotten the Dhar Braxton track and I thought that would never happen with 80's stuff! Sounds very House to me and the Youtube comments on the 12inch seem to suggest it is and was big on Urban US stations. Quite bangin' actually.

I recently got reminded of the first Rap track. Not what everyone might expect - it's a semi-novelty song based on a TV show catch-phrase: Here Comes The Judge by Pigmeat Markham which I was fond of back in 1968. Can I claim I was into rap before anyone on Buzzjack?

24th June 1986

2 weeks on top for Bucks Fizz as Nu Shooz are kept off the top spot, Sandie Shaw gets her 3rd top 5, Eurythmics keep the top 10's coming - just two misses since Sweet Dreams - and The Bangles make it 2 Top 10's, and a-ha 4 in a row. Highest new entry at 16 is the 20th anniversary reissue of Paperback Writer, last charting in 1976 for The Beatles, while The Housemartins get a first top 20, and Prince adds to his already long list of top 20's dating back to 1999 in 1983 and 1985 and will chart again in 1999 and 2016. Confused?

Madonna's up 30 with Papa Don't Preach, to 24, Queen are into the 40, and the fab unknown A View From A Hill single No Conversation is in at 34. El DEBarge goes solo and asks Who's Johnny? Ask The Teacher! Big Country are one place lower. Real Roxanne is also solo and Bang Zoom - but not To The Moon Alice, one for TV's Honeymooners fans there, assuming any are still alive. The Temps are in at 59 with future chart-topper My Girl in 1991, and also another 2000's run, having predated my charts on 60's runs, but keeping the Motown back catalogue alive.

Stevie Winwood is back, with his greatest solo track Higher Love, Steve Harley is also back to give him 12 years of chart entries, and the late Marvin Gaye is X rated posthumously giving him 17 years of chart entries.

'Higher Love' is a good dance-pop tune with tropical instrumentation, it kind of sounds like the 80s equivalent of Jonas Blue now.

Hi snakey, yes now you mention it theres a tropical sound to it. Someone should do a list of 20th century tropical sounding oldies, might be interesting....!

1st July 1986

It's 3 weeks on top for Bucks Fizz, their longest runner, as they hold off Wham! at 2, and Boys Don't Cry going top 5 with non-hit I Wanna Be A Cowboy. Bananarama grab a 5th or so top 10, Madonna strides into the 20, and A View From The Hill are talking about a big climb into the 20. Highest new entry at 18 is 1979 top 5 Boogie Wonderland, back again for Earth Wind & Fire & The Emotions.

Steve Winwood has a large leap into the 30 with his Higher Love, and Stan Ridgway is in Camouflage with his goose-bump-inducing story of a ghostly heroic marine in Viet-Nam new at 28 for the former Wall Of Voodoo man, and his joining Stewart Copeland on Don't Box Me In. Michael McDonald is back, I keep forgettin' how many tracks he's charted, but at least dating back to 1979 with The Doobie Brothers What A Fool Believes. Katrina gets another sunny wave-y hit, I'd advise her to give Eurovision a try when the hits dry up, Gary Numan extends his chart run to 7 years, and Barry Grey enters 17 years belatedly with his theme to Joe 90, puppet-strings-music-maestro, and not for the last time with a Gerry Anderson theme tune.
