Can I Play With Madness is the first of seven consecutive top 6 singles for Iron Maiden. By 1988,they had built up a large fanbase who bought each single when it came out,giving them high chart positions with songs that had little in common with the music that was in the rest of the chart.

They mentioned on the rundown there were two Taylor Dayne songs in the lower end of the chart at the same time. I much prefer Prove Your Love to Tell it To My Heart.

 

Wet Wet Wet's Temptation is actually quite good.

 

That Climie Fisher track is cheesy but very good, it has become a frequently played 80s classic along with fellow mid tempo pop song Aztec Camera's Somewhere In My Heart later on the year.

 

Simon Bates was surprised to see that Iron Maiden track top 5 and so I am I, it is good though.

Watching the 14/04/1988 episode:

 

We got our first glimpse of the fab future #1 Theme from S'express in a short video clip. Jellybean and Adele Bertei - Just A Mirage sounds more 1984 than 1988 with its Hi-NRG sound - very good anyway.

 

Some new jack swing with the very good Pebbles - Girlfriend - the 90s R&B sound was really starting to develop now.

 

The brilliant Heart from Pet Shop Boys is at #1 (although they don't like it that much apparently now).

 

Wonder how he felt in January 1991 when they entered at no1?

Yes I agree, it sounds fab, lyrically not their best. The video is brilliant too, bringing the more cynical edge the lyrics didn't. I was that fanbase buying the singles and albums - the singles B sides werent on albums and the A sides often were remixed, sharper and punchier.

Also great to see Fleetwood Macs video with one of their most famous tracks, an old band at their commercial peak late in their career. That PSBs track is class too I forgot about it but they were the biggest band in the UK at this time, no1 after No1.

 

 

Fleetwood Mac went very poppy and middle of the road with Everywhere, I think its a bit over-rated.

As Gary said in the show she had one of her first hits in 1984 due to SAW and she's teaming up again.

Just watched that Jelly Bean live performance from the 14th April episode, they are so cheesy live, truely does sound like totp in 1982-84 period. Bananarama really had lost their way by this period, so polished and lacking individuality that made them so popular!

Yeh and it's such a contrast to the Jelly Bean track. I've seen the performance on Big Hits 88. The studio wasn't really set for acid House live performances which imo lead to them changing things a bit in the studio!

You may have noticed that was the first Banarama performance with new member Jacquie O'Sullivan who had replaced Siobhan Fahey.

Yes I did. Is she the one that was in Shakespheres Sister? I find Banarama a really interesting girl group to look back on as they did the opposite of the norm going from cool to cheesy instead of the other way. The also changed style so much compare to their first totp performance in early 1982 with The Specials! This would be their last big hit though isn't it??

They still have a few top 20 singles to come,including a top 3 hit with a Comic Relief charity single in 1989. Yes,Siobhan Fahey left because they'd got too cheesy and ended up with Shakespears Sister. The two singles with Fun Boy Three were certainly their best songs. Fun Boy Three were ex-members of The Specials so an easy mistake to make.

Yeh I couldn't think of their name as I was typing so just went for the Specials lol. Anything with Terry Hall is amazing though!
