June 21, 20205 yr Yeh it wasn't great, a lot of videos and repeat performances which is the norm when there's one Presenter I find!
June 21, 20205 yr Top of the Pops 18/5/1989 Presented by Anthea Turner & Mark Goodier    As Mark says it's had sold 200,000 copies in week one. Some of the artists involved include Liverpudlian bands including The Christians, Holly Johnson, Paul McCartney, Gerry Marsden & produced by SAW. It probably shipped 200,000 in week one but sold 103,000 :D
June 21, 20205 yr It probably shipped 200,000 in week one but sold 103,000 :DÂ Gezza Do you have a link to the thread which has all the sales of No1s to add to this thread? Edited June 21, 20205 yr by Steve201
June 22, 20205 yr Thanks Gezza Your a star! Probably my favourite topic on BJ, love seeing the old sales and No1s!
June 28, 20205 yr Top of the Pops 1/6/1989 Presented by Gary Davies & Anthea Turner  Sinitta Right Back Where We Started No19 NE Natalie Cole Miss You Like Crazy (Video) No2  GsVcUzP_O_8 Madonna Express Yourself (Video) No10 NE* Double Trouble & The Rebel MC Just Keep Rockin No20^^ q5zdtmnU7_Y WASP The Real Me (Video) No23 Neneh Cherry Manchild No5 Cyndi Lauper I Drove All Night (Video) No22 2y1TZXc5DiY Fuzzbox Pink Sunshine No24 ***No1 Various Artists Ferry Cross The Mersey (Video)***No1 3rd Week 66,000 Guns & Roses Sweet Child O Mine (Video) No14 RE BpUI70VlhF4 We have Gary and Anthea presenting tonight and Gary has got his most colourful tie for the occasion.  We start out with Sinitta performing her new single in the studio with the hits drying up by this stage she needed a opening week performance and this would work in helping her to her final top 10 single in the coming weeks.  Next we have yet another showing of the video of the new single by Natalie Cole which turns into her highest charting single ever moving up a place this week to No2. It even gets Gary and Anthea slow dancing as we return to the studio. This is a classy ballad most would recall and deserves its high chart position.  Next we get another video this time the second single from Madonnas current hit album 'Express Yourself' is the highest new entry of the week at 10 and it could well challenge for the top spot like its predecessor. This sounds a bit like her 1990 single 'Vogue' in terms of the beats and production, another great song from her.  We go back to the studio next for the highest climber by Double Trouble and the Rebel MC and like a lot of other rap hip hop songs of the time sounds quite dated today but it was fairly bouncing back then as Anthea showed us when we returned to her after the performance.  A bit of a change next with another video this time for the new single by WASP with typical late 80s metal, they seemed to On a roll at this time as totp seemed to show their videos quite a bit. They don't stand out compared to other metal bands of the time and for some reason I personally hadn't heard of them before the reruns. Tell me if I'm alone in that opinion!? We get a second studio performance of 'Manchild' by the gorgeous Neneh Cherry. As Feel The Fever pointed out to me she is current chart star Mabel's mum. No wonder she's such a talent! Manchild is a fantastic song and great second single, she would have a decent decade ahead.  Yet another video next but who cares if it's the classic 'Drove All Night' by Cyndi and as Anthea points out her first appearance on the tops was in 1984 with the classic performance of 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun', seems along time ago even watching he reruns. This single is another classic from her, she was hit and miss chart wise in the uk but all the classics went top 10 at least.  We have a final studio performance from the eccentric pop stars Fuzzbox with their new single 'Pink Sunshine'.  Number 1 for a third week is by Scouce Aid which sells another 66,000 copies thanks to info from Gezzas sales data.  We end with the video from what's described as a new entry by totp and Anthea but 'Sweet Child O Mine' charted the previous year in the top 30 and is re released presumably following their rising status in 1989 as they must have knew it was a classic. Not a classic show apart from 'Manchilds' repeat performance but some great videos from US talent who understandably couldn't make it over. July 3, 20205 yr Top of the Pops 8/6/1989 presented by Nicky Campbell Transvision Vamp The Only One No25 NE Cliff Richard The Best Of Me (Video) No2 NE* _BQOmyNqmI4 Guns & Roses Sweet Child O Mine (Video) No The Beautiful South Song For Whoever No23  Lj6YpfgzxE4 **Breakers Vixen Love Made Me (Video) No36 **Breakers Donna Allen Joy & Pain (Video) No35 NE **Breakers New Model Army Green And Grey (Video) No37 NE  Paula Abdul Forever Your Girl (Video) No26 D Mob Featuring L.R.S Its Time To Get Funky No19 Soul II Soul Back to life (Video) No12 NE ***No1 Jason Donovan Sealed With A Kiss***No1 Bananarama Cruel Summer 89 (Video) No33 NE  0zxKm2lyYN0  Nicky presents solo tonight with a fab looking tie I will never forget, nearly as much as Gary's last week.  Anyway we start with the new single by Transvision Vamp live in the studio. 'Baby I Don't Care' would be a hard act to follow as their biggest ever hit but this is nice as well and as high energy indie-pop as their other material. 'The Only One' is the second single from the groups second album 'Velveteen'.  Next we get the highest new entry of the week with Cliff Richards 100th single release entering as high as number 2. Its the first single from amazingly Richards 26th studio release in the UK. We only get to see the video this week which is disappointing for the many. This was another slow ballad like single and follow up to his No1 single 'Mistletoe and Wine' from December.  Nicky reminds us that we have a fluid chart with as many as 8 new entries (someone tell him what would happen in the next 10 years) and counts down the 40-31 list which includes the first top 40 entry for a new band called R.E.M before introducing the video of 'Sweet Child Of Mine' by Guns & Roses which gets its second play in as many weeks. Peaking at 24 when first released last year its re-peaking this year in the top 10 and deservedly so for the metal classic still played in bars throughout the country each weekend to this day. Next we get a first TOTP performance from the new band Beautiful South and as Nicky explains they are made up of former Housemartins Paul Heaton and David Hemingway. Other members include Sean Welch, Dave Stead and Dave Rotheray. I love the tongue in cheek name they gave the band considering they are all from the North of England. The fantastic first release 'Song For Whoever' is the debut single from the first album 'Welcome To The Beautiful South' and little did we know how many fantastic track there were to come over the next decade or more with their greatest success not coming until 1996. This week sees the return of the breakers for the first time in a month with a selection of three tracks just entering the top 40 by Vixen, New Model Army and Donna Allen. We get the video to the new single by Paula Abdul next, nowhere near as good as the previous top 3 hit but still upbeat typical late 80s pop/rnb. She could be a judge on a talent show in the future that girl!! Next up its the new single from D Mob and his rap crew as Nicky and the rest of the studio hype the fact its time to get funky. I don't know what the youngsters see in this genre, it'll fade quickly I would say.... I do like this though not as much as the one they did in 1988 with Gary Haisman which is a dance classic. This is more rap than dance though the cool shuffle beats in the background are quite the toe tapper. Its the 2nd of 4 top 40 hits for the Mob. Next following the 30-11 countdown we have the fantastic second single by London soul r&b group Soul II Soul and this is where they struck gold with this smooth soulful number being the great new sound of summer 1989 along with another yet unheard dance track we will hear more about later in the season. The funky grooves showed the Brits could do adult modern soulful r&b just as well as the Americans. Although it sounds very 1990s in 1989 it still sounds a classic today. After 3 weeks at the top the Hillsborough aid song falls 2 places to 3 and makes way for a brand new entry (these were getting more regular by this point albeit still unique) for aussie soap star Jason Donovan with the less well remembered 'Sealed With a Kiss'. Its less well remembered but by this stage Donovan and Minogue were at their imperial phases when they didn't need to try due to previous big songs. This is ok and sounds a lot like the No1 by Gene Pitney and Marc Almond from earlier in the year. We end the show with the video by Bananarama with the inferior remix of the classic 1983 release of 'Cruel Summer'. The original is by far the best version, this has a weird late 80s heavy beat added and yet sounds slower and it doesn't fit. Edited July 4, 20205 yr by Steve201
July 3, 20205 yr Song For Whoever by The Beautiful South is certainly the best song from that edition. The Jason Donovan song is a cover version of a top 3 single from 1962 by Brian Hyland.
July 12, 20205 yr Top of the Pops 15/6/1989 Presented by Mark Goodier & Simon Parkin  Fuzzbox Pink Sunshine No17 R.E.M. He did seem nervous by introducing Fuzzbox but who wouldn't with those beauties - they seem to be on quite a lot with their singles. This is a bit more punky than the previous single so I like it more.  Last week we had the first performance of one huge band in Beautiful South, this week soon to be rock legends R.E.M. have their first top 40 hit so get a totp performance. They had been around for quite a while before 1989 but this was the start of their imperial singles phase between now and the mid noighties. I love 'Orange Crush' upbeat R.E.M. Is always a favourite of mine and I'm glad they performed on totp as it would become a legendary moment on the show.  After the first part of the chart countdown we have the new single from Donna Allen. A smooth late 80s RnB number and our third studio performance in a row which is good going these days on the tops! Joy and Pain was the fourth album by Bay Area-based R&B group Maze, released in July 18, 1980 and this version by Donna made it a top 10 single.  The lack of videos is to make room for this weeks 'breakers' into the top 40 which includes the new single from The Bangles as their biggest hit leaves the chart this one enters. Don't think it'll be as big!! We also have two other interesting ones. First Clannad and Bono from U2 with 'In a Lifetime' which was a January 1986 release by Clannad of their eight studio album 'Macalla' and finally a single from Placido Domingo and Jennifer Rush "Till I Loved You" is a song from the never-staged musical Goya: A Life in Song, based on the life of the Spanish artist Francisco Goya. It was written by American composer Maury Yeston. It was first a duet with Dionne Warwick. This was Rushs first time back in the top 40 in the uk since huge 1985 hit 'The Power of Love' and would be her second and final top 40 single in the country.   Next up in the studio we have another appearance from local mix masters Double Trouble and the Rebel MC. The 1987-90 era of totp very much is symbolised by these type of new hip hop groups who were making an impact in the top 40, as I've said before they sound dated but were very much cool at the time. Aul Goodier was bouncing about to it at the end, loving it haha!! After the 30-11 countdown we have another viewing of Cyndi Laupers classic 'I Drove All Night'. Such a great song, she deserved a lot more hits imo. Before the top 10 countdown we get another studio performance of the beautiful Sinitta single in the top 5 now. It's a cheesefest but tell me you don't love it. Michael Stripe is probably away to the totp bar now he's seen some of his fellow acts.  So for a second week we have 'Sealed With A Kiss' by Jason Donovan at the top spot, this is growing on me with its second listen, definately sounds like Pitney/Almond song from a few months back. Quite a lovely little melody, you can imagine Waterman picking it for him from here shouting gauranteed no1 this song.  The quality goes up a notch with the final song of the show by Tom Petty. 'I Won't Back Down' is the first single from Tom Pettys debut solo release 'Full Moon Fever' and co-written by Jeff Lynne. It kind of sounds like Sam Smiths 'Stay With Me'! July 19, 20204 yr Top of the Pops 22/6/1989 Presented by Simon Mayo & Gary Davies  Living In A Box Gatecrashing No37 NE Gladys Knight Licence To Kill (Video) No20^^ ZnSbrx5YByY U2 All I Want Is You (Video) No5 NE The Bangles Be With You No26 TFqy9sD0PlQ Clannad with Bono In A Lifetime (Video) No21 Prince Bat Dance (Video) No3 NE* D.Mob Featuring LRS Its Time To Get Funky No11 The Beautiful South Song For Whoever No8 ***No1 Soul II Soul Back To Life (Video)***No1 Placido Domingo & Jennifer Rush Till I Loved You (Video) No24  TB54dZkzZOY  We start the show with Simon and Gary presenting in their shorts on the upper stage, it must have been a warm summers day. Living In A Box are the first performance Gatecrashing the centre stage. 'Gatecrashing' is the secondsingle from the second and final album from the band.  Next up is the video of the soundtrack for the new Bond film 'Licence to Kill' and the song of the same name from legendary soul songstress Gladys Knight. I only ever knew her for her relatively successful Christmas song 'Do You Hear What I Hear'. This isn't one of the Bond songs I remember much growing up (similar to the A-Ha song from the previous edition) but the film itself is one of the best and Timothy Daltons final outing.  The 40-31 countdown shows one notable entry for Public Enemy with 'Fight The Power'. We follow this with the video for the new U2 single 'All I Want Is You' and it's a fantastic video.  After missing out on a studio performance of the wonderful no1 single 'Eternal Flame' earlier in the spring we thankfully get a performance of the follow up 'Be With You', great to see too as they are a classy band.  Hard to follow up but we do with Clannad minus Bono (unfortunately) who's part is added with the video in parts. Another lovely track by them, they don't come up with yearly hits but when they do it's a lovely track which generally does very well.  Following the chart rundown from 30-11 we have the video of the highest new entry by Lrince and keeping the movie theme going this is from the new Batman film. It's all pretty terrible but Keaton's reincarnation to the marvel comic was a mega hit in the movie theatres so no surprise the hype and Prince pushed this up to no3 in its first week on sale. High new entries were becoming a more regular occurrence by this point of 1989, maybe this was a pointer to the future... Before the top 10 we get a repeat performance of the house track 'Time To Get Funky' by D Mob followed by a second repeat for the debut Beautiful South single which isn't so bad as it's brillant.  We countdown the top 10 with some legendary artists such as Guns N Roses, Cyndi Lauper, Beautiful South, Madonna, Prince but at No1 is the sound of the new cool British urban scene emerging alongside house music by this stage of the 1980s in the form of Soul II Soul and the wonderful Funky 'Back To Life' Wonderful Stuff and it's a sound that really feels a lot more 90s if you know what I'm getting at. The beats have matured and a lot of the pop sounds like something we hear nowadays - 30 years later!  We end with another showing for the operaic song by Palido Domingo & Jennifer Rush! This song is perfect for both performers and shows off their great vocal skills. It's very mid 80d though with the soft beats and sax but brings Rush back to the charts after underwhelming since scoring the final millionseller of the 1980s 4 years before with 'The Power Of Love'. Nice to see Holly continuing to perform in the totp studios. This is another fantastic track and he deserved so much more success following this album but he seemed to fade away very quickly in the UK music climate of the early 90s.  Following this we have the new single 'Breakthru' by Queen and the follow up to 'I Want It All' and second single from 13th studio album 'The Miracle'. Filmed on top of a moving train with Freddie sporting a shaped beard its not a Queen classic like the opening single but quite nice and upbeat. Next up we get the 40-31 countdown with new entries from Sonia and Monie Love being the biggest talking points. Next we get what must be a third performance of the single from Double Trouble and the Rebl MC live in the studio. They are still moving up the chart to number 11 this week so they must be desperate for that top 10 hit. Its a good track and has grown on me a lot in the past month. Next another single moving up the chart and a repeat performance for Donna Allen 'Joy and Pain'. Not a fan of this, kind of stereotypical late 80s with the hooks and beats. I like her bowler hat though! We have Tim Smith from radio 1 presenting the breakers, maybe they did have some help for Andrea. Anyway the breakers include the new entries by Monie Love and the climber from Welsh 50s comeback boyband Waterfront. There's also a new entry for the new single by Kylie....sorry I mean Sonia with her SAW inspired new single. This one has that late 80s SAW formula which should see it climb right to the top spot in the next month and sounds exactly like all the other SAW/Kylie hits of the 1987-90 period. Hopefully this will be one of the last as they are diluting the market. Next up in the studio is the highest climber by legendary dance band 'M' with their biggest hit 'Pop Muzik'. A number 2 hit when first released in 1979 this is remixed version of the track and still sounds good, a classic. The lead singer had a suit filled with CDs those brand new music players, how modern.  Next up its the 30-11 countdown followed by the video for the new Guns N Roses single 'Patience'. As Anthea said they now have two singles in the top 30, don't let them fast forward to the 2020s when that is pretty common. Not as well known as the previous single but its a nice change in sound with a slower ballad. I really like it actually. Next up we have the London Boys back in the studio with their second single from the album 'The Twelve Commandments of Dance' 'London Nights'. Its a camptastic performance once again and they get the party started with another upbeat release. One of the guys look a little like Right Said Fred. I'm not a fan of this disco euro-pop if I'm being honest. Its sort of what Hi-Energy had morphed into by 1989. And at number one the best song of the episode and the week is 'Back To Life'. Its a pity we are getting the video again, surely being a relatively new group it would make sense to come into perform? Fantastic number 1 at any rate. Sorry what did I say about quality - we have a glimpse of the unreal 'Fight The Power' video by rap legends Public Enemy. Edited July 21, 20204 yr by Steve201
July 21, 20204 yr Yes,it's a shame Soul II Soul never performed Back To Life in the studio. I've just seen the next single by them on the December shows and that one was on video as well. The London Boys made several studio appearances in 1989. They were both tragically killed in a car crash in 1996.   Â
July 21, 20204 yr Thabks for commenting Rollo, yeh I read that about the London Boys sadly being involved in a car crash. So young too! I've added the 1979 performance of 'Pop Muzik' from totp at the time as a special surprise!
July 24, 20204 yr Soul II Soul never appeared in the studio to perform BTL as TOTP apparently insisted they mime the track after allowing them to perform live in the rehearsal and also do a live vocal for KOM earlier in the year. I'm not sure why. The band took umbrage to it and left the studio.
July 24, 20204 yr Fair enough, shows some principle at least, prob got on better with the next producer in 1991-94!
July 24, 20204 yr Next up we have the London Boys back in the studio with their second single from the album 'The Twelve Commandments of Dance' 'London Nights'. Its a camptastic performance once again and they get the party started with another upbeat release. One of the guys look a little like Right Said Fred. I'm not a fan of this disco euro-pop if I'm being honest. Its sort of what Hi-Energy had morphed into by 1989.Yes Hi-NRG still existed (see also Bronski Beat and Eartha Kitt getting a low top 40 hit in 1989 and the Time Warp remix by Damian). London Nights is good I think it sounds more dance-y and less cheesy than their first hit. Sad what happened with London Boys, they died quite young, as with Mel from Mel and Kim. We will see Hi-NRG morph into Eurodance as we go through the early 90s of course. I prefer Roy Orbison's version, his version was I think actually the first version I was familiar with, but Cyndi's version is still good, its a great song. July 26, 20204 yr Top of the Pops 6/7/1989 presented by Nicky Campbell Sonia You'll Never Stop Me From Loving You No12^^ Gladys Knight Licence To Kill (Video) No6 HEGwcn3CpyE Monie Love Grandpa's Party No22 Karyn White Superwoman No21 **Breakers Bette Midler Wind Beneath My Wings (Video) No30 NE **Breakers Danny Wilson The Second Summer Of Love (Video) No32 NE **Breakers De La Soul Say No Go (Video) No33 NE The Beautiful South Song For Whoever No2 Pet Shop Boys It's Alright (Video) No5* 9r0pISqCDRw Chaka Khan Ain't Nobody No18 NE ***No1 Soul II Soul Back To Life (Video)***No1 3 Weeks 62,000 sales A Guy Called Gerald Voodoo Ray (Video) No26  TB54dZkzZOY We start this week with Nicky Campbell going solo and presenting the highest climber of the week from SAWs new starlet Liverpudlian Sonia. She's like the British Kylie, 1989 seemed to be the end of the SAW years as the company seemed to be repeating the old tricks with slightly less marketable stars. At least we will move into a new era soon enough!! Anyway I'm not a fan of SAW but I don't mind Sonia herself, she was a bubbly girl and seemed to love her moment and this single is a decent pop track. As I said last week it sounds EXACTLY like Kylie. We get another view of the new Bond movie sound track 'Licence To Kill' as it extends its stay in the top 10, probably one of the classic Bond movies but not a hugely memorable theme for me anyway. Gladys Knight though is a seven time Grammy Award winner with 2 US Billboard number ones.  We get the countdown from 40-31 with the biggest standouts being new entries for Kirsty McColl, Danny Wilson, De La Soul and Norman Cook post Housemartins. Following this in the studio its Grandpa's Party by Monie Love. Like a lot of the house/rap songs in the top 40 in 1989 it has that quick bounce house sound. Next up we have the video from Superwoman Karyn White a smooth soulful R&B number. Released from her self titled debut album released in January 1989.  We have three breakers from De La Soul, Danny Wilson and Bette Midler (the film star) with Danny Wilson definitely the best of that bunch. Following this we have I think our third performance of the debut Beautiful South single again in the studio, this certainly pushes the quality bar right up to 10 and thankfully the general public seem to agree as it climbs to the runner up spot sales wise, god I love this band and Paul Heaton.Do you know hes a Cliftonville fan - my local team in Belfast. Once a hipster always a hipster!! The irony of Norman Cook testing the popularity waters with his first solo hit in the same week, Norman would be back though. Following the 30-11 countdown we get the exclusive new video for 'Its Alright' the new single from the Pet Shop Boys. Have a feeling we will see less of them in the studio this era, they were the biggest band in Britain by this stage. This is a bit of an underwhelming song for me, not a song I remember nowadays, quite fast but a great video. They were big enough to enter straight in at number 5 in the opening week. It was the fourth and final single from the 1988 album 'Introspective' which the campaign started for way back with 'Always On My Mind' back in November 1987!  Back in the studio now with the legend that is Chaka Khan with a remix of her 1983 soul classic 'Ain't Nobody' remixed for 1989 by Frankie Knuckles. This was the second single taken from her compilation album 'Life Is A Dance: The Remix Project. It was named after a single from her 1978 solo debut 'Chaka'.  Another wonderful slice of pop rnb genius at the number one spot for a third week for Souk II Soul with the classic 'Back To Life' again disappointingly on video.  We finish the show with the video for Voodoo Ray another acid house classic from the era for me!! It was a acid house track by Gerald Simpson under the name 'A Guy called Gerald'. It was a classic acid house record closely associated with legendary Manchester club 'Hacienda'! He was an early member of 808 State which we will see more from on the tops later in 1989.  One thing though where are all the bands in 1989??? Edited July 26, 20204 yr by Steve201
July 26, 20204 yr The bands were pushed out a bit in 1989 by all the dance and pop music that was in the chart. The Christmas Day show has just been shown with The Beautiful South and Sonia returning to perform those songs again. Song For Whoever was also the subject of a question on Pointless Celebrities yesterday. They had to identify celebrities from their photos who had the same first names as girls mentioned in Song For Whoever.
