Biography

Born and raised in Forest Gate, East London, British hip-hop producer, songwriter, and DJ Steel Banglez's first steps into music came when his mother taught him how to play various classical Indian instruments at a young age. Picking up the music bug, Banglez was then taught how to DJ by his older brother before immersing himself in the then-growing grime and U.K. garage scenes, regularly appearing on local pirate radio stations. After studying music production and audio engineering at London's SAE -- and finding himself serving time behind bars -- Banglez started producing for local talent, making a name for himself with tracks for the likes of Ghetts and Yung Meth, Wiley, and P Money. Banglez set himself apart from the standard grime production of the time, bringing in samples from Bollywood films, Jamaican dub, and Chinese music. After contacting Birmingham-based MC MIST via social media, Banglez hooked up with the vocalist to record the M.I.S. to the T EP in 2016. The standout track "Karlas Back" helped propel his production work into the spotlight. At the beginning of 2017 he issued the single Money -- which featured guest spots from the likes of MoStack, Abra Cadabra, Haile, and MIST -- while also signing a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell. A few months later, Banglez released "Bad," which saw him once again teaming up with MoStack, as well as Not3s, Yungen, and Mr Eazi. By year's end, the single reached number 50 on the U.K. pop chart. - iTunes

Biography

Jorja Smith is an English R&B singer/songwriter whose soulful, jazz-tinged cadence, heartfelt lyrics, and retro sound invoke names like Alunageorge, Nao, Lulu James, and Amy Winehouse, the latter of whom the Walsall-based artist cites as her biggest influence. Smith issued her debut single, "Blue Lights," in 2015, but it was 2016's powerful "Where Did I Go?" that began turning heads. That track, and the follow-up single "Beautiful Little Fools," eventually culminated in the late-2016 release of Smith's debut EP, Project 11. The following year saw her international profile elevated via her multiple appearances on Drake's surprise playlist/LP More Life, which saw her holding court amongst a bevy of high-profile guests like Kanye West, Young Thug, 2 Chainz, and Travis Scott. - iTunes

After Beluga Heights became part of the Warner Music Group, Derulo released his debut single "Whatcha Say" in May 2009. It sold over five million digital downloads, gaining an RIAA certification of triple Platinum, and reaching number 1 in the U.S. and New Zealand. Derulo released his second single, "In My Head", in December 2009. His debut album, Jason Derulo, was released on March 2, 2010. He released his second studio album, Future History, on September 16, 2011, the album was preceded by the release of the UK number-one single "Don't Wanna Go Home". Biography

A London-based grime MC of Ghanaian heritage, Stormzy launched his career clashing at youth clubs around his hometown. His performances evolved from grime-only music that showed a love of artists like Skepta to more rap-oriented material that reflected Stormzy's growing appreciation for artists like Drake. Late in 2013 he began uploading his "Wicked Skengman" series of freestyles over classic grime beats; in 2014, he made his official debut with the EP Dreamers Disease. A year later he released the single "Know Me From" along with "WickedSkengMan 4," the first track in his "WickedSkengMan" freestyle series and a Top 20 hit in the U.K. That December, Stormzy performed the single's B-side, "Shut Up," at a match between heavyweight boxers Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte. The song jumped into the Top 40 following the broadcast, and the rapper launched a campaign to have the song top the charts during Christmas. This boosted the track to the number eight position, and the number one position on the R&B singles chart. Before returning to the studio to record his debut LP, he released non-album single "Scary" in the spring of 2016. Stormzy returned in 2017 with Gang Signs & Prayer (#Merky Records), which featured the single "Big for Your Boots" and appearances by Kehlani, MNEK, and Ghetts. - iTunes

Biography

Croydon rapper Hardy Caprio gained early recognition for his work when he was nominated for the Get Rated award at its inaugural ceremony (its aim is to celebrate new talent). Caprio grew up in Croydon, South London, as did grime star Stormzy, but he went to school in Bromley, a more well-off area of South London. His dual existence showed him that the drama he experienced in Croydon could be avoided. He began putting out his own music, which resulted in the EPs Hardy Season and The Hollywood EP. In 2017, he released the single "Unsigned," which garnered over two million views on YouTube. - iTunes

this is the 1st newie? raye missed then

Alexandra will be lucky to go top 100 this week, let alone top 40.

Shadow has been B listed on radio 2 now, so hopefully things will start picking up from this week.

RAYE missing the top 40 then presumably, didn't expect that.

Good to hear some more London rap in the chart :music: Should've been 'Unsigned' but this is good too and will probs grow.

When the chart show is shorter like it is today, would you guys prefer the chart show to be done like it used to be (mostly snippets of all songs up to the Top 10) or like it is now, skipping 5-6 songs in a row?
really cannot tell this apart from the other similar ones, doesn't really stand out

I'm quite happy with it like it is now, as long as we hear the newies! The full chart's on the website for anyone to check after the show anyway so it doesn't hurt to skip songs in these cases.

Biography

Kojo Funds emerged amid a number of rap artists mixing Afro-swing, dancehall, and R&B in the late 2010s. He was born and raised in East London -- an area that also produced Dizzee Rascal, Kano, and Wiley -- but was also of Ghanaian and Dominican Republic heritage, and African and Caribbean influences would later influence his work. Kojo's music career began in 2014 when he started freestyling with friends, and their encouragement led him to take his musical aspirations seriously. His first track, "Want from Me," was released in 2014 and featured his melodic rap style as well as demonstrating the impact of dancehall on his music. In 2016, Kojo released the track that would prove to be his big break. He collaborated on "Dun Talkin'" with Abra Cadabra, and it won the Mobo 2016 Best Song Award. - iTunes

Paloma Faith

Paloma Faith (born Paloma Faith Blomfield; 21 July 1981) is an English singer, songwriter, and actress. Faith is known for her retro and eccentric style. Faith met her managers Jamie Binns and Christian Wåhlberg in 2007. Her debut album, Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful? was released in 2009. It is certified double platinum in the UK. The album contains her first single, "Stone Cold Sober". The album also contains certified singles — "New York" and "Upside Down", both of which achieved a silver certification in the UK. The album earned Faith her first BRIT Award nomination in 2010.

In 2012, Faith released her second studio album, Fall to Grace, which debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart. The album was critically well received and surpassed the success of her debut, earning her numerous award nominations in 2013. The album has been certified double platinum in the UK, and is overall the fourth best-selling album of the year in the nation. The album produced her first top ten single, "Picking Up the Pieces", the top twenty cover version of INXS's "Never Tear Us Apart" and earned her two BRIT Award nominations for Best British Female and British Album of the Year. Faith released her third album, A Perfect Contradiction (2014), which stands at her most successful album to date, also receiving a double platinum certification. The album spawned two top-ten singles on the UK Singles Chart — "Can't Rely on You" and "Only Love Can Hurt Like This" — with the latter topping the charts in Australia. In late 2014, Faith collaborated with Sigma on the track "Changing", which debuted at number-one on the UK Singles Chart and became Faith's first chart topper in her native country. Faith won Best British Female Solo Artist at the BRIT Awards in 2015, after being nominated for the category a previous four times. "Ready for the Good Life" was also released from the album, which featured as the official soundtrack song for Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie (2016). Faith's fourth album, The Architect was released in November 2017. The first single from the album, "Crybaby", was released in August 2017.

She has also made feature film appearances in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Dread, the 2007 remake of St Trinian's and Youth. In 2016, Faith was announced as a judge for the fifth series of The Voice UK, but only remained on the show for one series due to her pregnancy. Faith gave birth to a daughter in December 2016. - Wikipedia

This is growing on me! Paloma sounds brilliant as always and I'm pleased she's got another top 40.

only thing i don't like is that they've auto-tuned paloma's voice and almost doesn't sound like her,

especially in the 1st verse

Biography

Zedd

Born Anton Zaslavski in southwest Germany, Grammy-winning electronic producer Zedd broke onto the European dance scene in 2010 with a remix of Skrillex's "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites." Though known for his glitch, pulsing production, Zedd's musical journey began in the acoustic realm. Raised in a musical family, the future producer cut his teeth on the piano at four years old and eventually moved on to drums and played in a rock band before being drawn into the digital world in 2009. Zedd built a name for himself with his remixes of artists like Lady Gaga, B.o.B, and Armand Van Helden while also releasing his own singles and EPs.

In late 2012, the young producer delivered his first full-length, the club-worthy Clarity, whose lead single, "Spectrum," shot to the top of the U.S. dance chart. One of the follow-ups, "Stay the Night," featuring Hayley Williams, reached number two on the British pop charts. The title track, featuring British pop singer Foxes on vocals, won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording in 2014. That same year, Zedd scored another hit with Ariana Grande's track "Break Free."

In 2015 he released his sophomore LP, True Colors, which presented more diversity with genres like rock and rap as influences. The collection featured Selena Gomez, Troye Sivan, and Logic among its guests, and topped the Billboard dance/electronic chart. An international tour in support of the album followed. In 2017, he issued the single "Stay," featuring Canadian singer Alessia Cara on vocals. The following year, he paired with country sensation Maren Morris for the single "The Middle," which topped Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. ~ Gregory Heaney & Neil Z. - iTunes

Maren Morris

Maren Morris is a singer and songwriter whose music bridges the gap between hard country, classic rock, and hip-hop-influenced pop; she has enjoyed success as both a tunesmith and a performer. Morris was born in Dallas, Texas on April 10, 1990 and she grew up with a love of music, saying she was always willing to belt out a tune on the family's karaoke machine by age ten. By the time she was 14, she had learned to play guitar and began playing professionally, self-releasing a debut album, Walk On. Morris had struck a deal with Smith Music Group when she dropped her second album, 2007's All That It Takes; her songwriting was strong enough that she either wrote or co-wrote eight of the album's 13 tracks. Morris graduated high school and was attending the University of North Texas when she self-released her third full-length, 2011's Live Wire. A year later, she left Texas for Nashville, determined to shift her career into high gear.

After winning an "Artist on the Verge" prize at the New Music Seminar, Morris first got her foot in the door as a songwriter, signing a publishing deal with Yellow Dog and writing tunes for Tim McGraw ("Last Turn Home") and Kelly Clarkson ("Second Wind"). In addition, she ramped up her touring schedule, sharing stages with artists as diverse as Pat Green, Radney Foster, and Marty Stuart, and performing for artists in Europe and the United Kingdom as well as the United States. In 2015, Morris released a digital single titled "My Church," about the close connection between music and driving. The song became a viral hit, generating over 2.5 million streams in a bit longer than a month. The major labels in Music City took notice, and Morris signed a deal with Sony Music Nashville, who dropped a five-song EP featuring "My Church" in November 2015. Sony serviced "My Church" to country radio in anticipation of her full-length debut Hero, which appeared in June of 2016. The album hit number one on the country charts, and earned Morris a lot of attention: She was nominated for several Grammy awards, won CMA's New Artist of the Year, and earned a slot on Saturday Night Live late in 2016. During early 2017, she toured (both as a headliner and with Sam Hunt), and released a deluxe edition of Hero that included several bonus tracks. In October, Morris, in collaboration with Vince Gill, delivered the powerful single "Dear Hate," which was written in response to the mass shooting at Las Vegas' Route 91 Harvest Festival, a stage that she had played the night before that attack. - iTunes

Grey

Grey are an American electronic music duo consisting of brothers Kyle and Michael Trewartha. They are best known for their debut single "Starving", a collaboration with American singer Hailee Steinfeld, featuring production work from Russian-German DJ Zedd. Kyle Trewartha was formerly known as Singularity, under which name he released numerous remixes and original tracks to SoundCloud. Their debut EP, Chameleon, was released on 29 September 2017. - Wikipedia

Biography

Hertford-reared, Bristol-based singer/songwriter George Ezra possesses a deep, resonant, and emotionally weathered voice that belies his considerable youth. Influenced by similarly precocious troubadours like Bob Dylan and Hank Williams, Ezra was just 19 when he issued his debut single, "Budapest," a warm, amiable, and soulful slice of classy folk-pop that invoked names like Willy Mason, Ben Howard, Ray LaMontagne, and Tom Odell. That song, along with three others, appeared on his 2013 debut EP, Did You Hear the Rain? Increased touring and an appearance at Glastonbury preceded his second EP, Cassy O', which arrived in early 2014. "Budapest" was re-released in June of that year, followed a few weeks later by Ezra's debut LP, Wanted on Voyage. The album entered the U.K. charts at number three and eventually climbed into the top spot by year's end, earning him four Brit Award nominations and a North American tour supporting Sam Smith in early 2015. During this period he made his American television debut with appearances on Saturday Night Live and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, increasing his exposure. In April 2017, Ezra announced a "top secret" U.K. tour, during which he would debut new material. It was accompanied by the release of "Don't Matter Now," the lead single from his follow-up LP. A second single, "Paradise," was released in January 2018 followed by the announcement that Ezra's second album, Staying at Tamara's, would arrive in March of that year. - iTunes
