...and Russia now thinks the UK is keeping Yulia prisoner, having saved her life so she can give evidence and receive ongoing medical support at great cost to the British taxpayer.

ย

Because the UK has a history of political prisoners going back all the way to...errr...hmmm,,,when WAS the last one who hadn't caused the death of innocent people...?

ย

Hmmm, who recently has helped shoot down an airliner? Invade a country, and section off part of it? Support a regime that uses banned lethal nerve gas on children? Invades the democratic processes of trading partners? How about buzz the skies around Bournemouth with it's air force? Buy up half of London? End up mysteriously rich out of nowhere and stick it in offshore banking accounts?

ย

I really can't think which country would bang someone in prison after failing to murder them in a hugely public area with agents that could spread to voters. I can think of one who might keep at it until they got rid of witnesses as well as the one they just didn't quite successfully murder...

Russia really is doing a terrible job of trying to cast doubt on the UK government's story. There are still several unanswered questions about the official line (some of which are bound to remain unanswered just in case there is a trial) but the Moscow line is about as believable as the average Harry Potter book.

Meanwhile going back to tried and trusted methods of dealing with anyone revealing the truth, nerve agents are just too unreliable...

Another journalist in Russia murdered. Maksim Borodin of RIA Novy Den "fell" from the fifth floor. He had been investigating Vagner, the private military company managed by Putin's friend whose mercenaries are fighting on Asad's behalf in Syria."

The 'interview' Russia has put out with the suspected assailants is absolutely hilarious. I feel sorry for people that fall for this PR stunt.

OK, so we've had lots of stories over the last week or so about then apparent ineptitude of various Russian spies. Does anyone else think this might be cover for some rather more competent spies?

Another conspiracy theory?

Think about it. We are being led to believe that the Russian spy service is now laughably inept. Of course, that may be true. OTOH, if you had a team of highly effective spies in various places around the world, wouldn't you welcome people thinking your intelligence service was pretty crap?

Are the UK government going for the same tactic in the Brexit negotiations ?

ย

YOu mean they look inept, but are actually very effective?

I can see things sliding back to the cold war era. What with Trump pulling the US-Russia INF Treaty. Putin and Trump are the polar opposite of Reagan and Gorbachev. Not great for the world
Although tbf Russia has been developing hypersonic nukes etc. USA literally cannot defend itself against the nee technology as it has been following the deal, unlike Putin.

I'd have thought, as a socialist, you'd have been on of Putin's greatest supporters...

Then why does he *behave* like a socialist - suppressing opposition, etc?

ย

Um. What? That has NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH SOCIALISM. LIKE. AT ALL???

ย

In fact, voter suppression comes from rich capitalist oligarchs like the Tories and Repukes. Not from democratic socialists.

Surely youโ€™re not following the same flawed reasonings of Syed Kamall Vid?

Authoritarianism (the word you are looking for to describe how Putin behaves, he is almost exclusively authoritarian, left vs right be damned) is not exclusive to socialism and it is a trait that many modern western social democrats would rather leave out. Whereas the right across the world are currently delighting in adding sprinkles and heapings of authoritarianism to their policies.
