Andrew's ReviewNow That’s What I Call Music! 79 or Now 79 was the Summer volume from 2011. Containing 44 tracks, and 10 UK #1 singles, this volume showcased some of the finest music of the time. It was the first volume in the series to feature Aloe Blacc, Ed Sheeran, Birdy, LMFAO (as a lead artist), DJ Fresh and Nicki Minaj (as a lead artist).

Unusually very few noteworthy songs were omitted on this occasion, with less singles impacting the official Top 40 chart. Some did get overlooked but many were in favour of higher charting hits by the same artist, such as Nicole Scherzinger, Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez, The Black Eyed Peas, Katy B, Lady Gaga and Mann. The only other noteworthy artist to get overlooked, twice in fact, was Beyoncé.

This would be the only occasion in the series to include music by Alexandra Stan, Yasmin (as a lead artist), Loick Essien, Vato Gonzalez, Snoop Dogg (as a lead artist), DEV (as a lead artist), Mann, Nero and Wynter Gordon (as a lead artist).

Artwork Rating: 6/10 Good

Contrary to my usual negative ratings for artwork, this volume seems to stand out a little from the rest. I’m not sure what it is that makes volume this unique but whilst the theme of flip flops seems unimpressive, the colours used are fresh and summery and the design is very fun and bright. It puts me in a good mood unlike the other ones of the time.

Disc 1 Favourite: Jennifer Lopez – On The Floor

I chose this one as it’s one of my favourite hits from Ms Lopez. Pitbull certainly helps to solidify this song and give it some structure, but the party anthem chorus is infectious and atmospheric. A great track on this compilation.

Disc 2 Favourite: DJ Fresh feat. Sian Evans – Louder

So so many good songs on this disc from start to finish. I picked this one from DJ Fresh which brought his name to the fore and helped him go onto have much more chart success in the future. Not sure whatever happened to Sian Evans though.

Disc 3 Tracklist:

(A concept of what a third disc might look like if other hits from the era were used)

1. Nicole Scherzinger – Right There 4:02 {3}

2. Beyoncé – Best Thing I Never Had 4:13 {3}

3. Jennifer Lopez feat. Lil Wayne – I’m Into You 3:20 {9}

4. Lady Gaga – Judas 4:10 {8}

5. The Black Eyed Peas – Don’t Stop The Party 6:07 {17}

6. Tinie Tempah – Simply Unstoppable (Yes Remix) 3:57 {33}

7. Katy B – Easy Please Me 3:55 {25}

8. Chase & Status feat. Delilah – Time 4:20 {21}

9. Nicola Roberts – Beat Of My Drum 2:55 {27}

10. Enrique Iglesias feat. Usher – Dirty Dancer 3:34 {21}

11. Starboy Nathan – Diamonds 3:33 {23}

12. Chipmunk feat. Keri Hilson – In The Air 3:55 {37}

13. Jodie Connor feat. Tinchy Stryder – Bring It 3:27 {37}

14. Ke$ha – Blow 3:39 {32}

15. Jedward – Lipstick 2:55 {40}

16. Blue – I Can 3:01 {16}

17. Parade – Perfume 3:07 {38}

18. Beyoncé – Run The World (Girls) 3:58 {11}

19. Nicki Minaj – Girls Fall Like Dominos 3:44 {24}

20. Paramore – Monster 3:20 {21}

21. Arctic Monkeys – Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair 3:03 {28}

----------

Total time: 1:18:15

Overall Rating: 8/10 Extremely Good

It’s not an overstatement to say this is a great volume. There’s so much to be pleased with on the two discs and it is great to see little eyebrow raising omissions in the list. They really did themselves proud with the end result, and the music on this volume still sounds great to listen to some years later. A great summer of music in 2011 captured perfectly on this volume.

Hopefully Lewis can find us some non-Top 40 gems from the era to play on Wednesday. ^_^

Thanks Andrew. I have to agree with you a very good edition indeed with so many great hits! Here is my Top 5:-

1) Calvin Harris feat. Kelis - Bounce

2) Coldplay - Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall

3) Snoopdogg feat. David Guetta - Sweat

4) Wynter Gorden - Dirty Talk

5) Swedish House Mafia - Save The World

Artwork: 8/10

Disc 1 Top 10: (Love all ten of these and all of them would be top 2 on disc 2!)

08. Katy Perry – Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)

The Lazy Song/Finish Line/One Big Family are also good (I completely forgot the latter existed, I've not heard that in years!!)

Disc 2 Top 10: (Super Bass is the only one I ever return to anymore but I'd bop to all 10 of these if I was to hear them out)

01. Nicki Minaj – Super Bass

02. Pitbull feat. Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer – Give Me Everything

03. David Guetta feat. Nicki Minaj & Flo Rida – Where Them Girls At

Worst Five:

01. Mann feat. 50 Cent – Buzzin

02. Chris Brown feat. Benny Benassi – Beautiful People

03. Coldplay – Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall

04. Jason Derulo – Don’t Wanna Go Home

05. Tinchy Stryder feat. Dappy – Spaceship

(I'm sure the Scounting For Girls/Cee Lo Green songs would be here as well but tf I don't remember how either of them go)

Tracklist: 7/10 (not the best)

Outside of a select few, I think this is a fairly poor album overall. Here are my Top 5:

1. Example - Changed The Way You Kiss Me

2. Wretch 32 ft. Example - Unorthodox

3. Take That - Love Love

4. Calvin Harris feat. Kelis – Bounce

5. Pitbull feat. Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer – Give Me Everything

Disc 1 top ten:

  1. On The Floor
  2. Mr. Saxobeat
  3. Born This Way
  4. I Need A Dollar
  5. Just Can't Get Enough
  6. Finish Line
  7. Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall
  8. Someone Like You
  9. Skinny Love
  10. Don't Hold Your Breath

Disc 2 top ten:

  1. Party Rock Anthem
  2. Bounce
  3. Sweat
  4. Give Me Everything
  5. Changed The Way You Kiss Me
  6. Louder
  7. Guilt
  8. Hitz
  9. How We Roll
  10. Sun Is Up

what an amazing disc 2 though!!! banger after banger!

Bottom five:

1 The Lazy Song [thanks to him being all over the radio his songs get annoying very quickly, and this one still is]

2 Don't Wanna Go Home [13 year-old was NOT happy that he mauled Show Me Love, and it still isn't any good]

3 Glad You Came [awful lyrics and amongst all the other club bangers this seemed rather weak and watered down]

4 California King Bed [a real low point in her singles discography, painfully boring and borderline screech]

5 Love How It Hurts [they were beyond a joke at this point]

Hopefully Lewis can find us some non-Top 40 gems from the era to play on Wednesday. ^_^
Here's a few

Flux Pavilion - Bass Cannon (#56)

Wiz Khalifa - Roll Up (#42)

Alex Metric & Steve Angello - Open Your Eyes (#89) [forgot this actually made top 100!]

Eric Saade - Popular (#76)

Toddla T feat. Shola Ama & J2K - Take It Back (#59)

Cascada - San Francisco (#64) [the last time leww can plug Cascada... until he plays Glorious anyway despite it not having charted :P]

Martin Solveig feat. Kele - Ready 2 Go (#48)

Laidback Luke & Steve Aoki feat. Lil Jon - Turbulence (#66)

Disc 1

1. Someone Like You

2. Just Can’t Get Enough

3. I Need A Dollar

4. Born This Way

5. On The Floor

Disc 1 is amazing almost all the way through, even The Lazy Song isn’t too bad although it’s not a song I often go back to. The Scouting for Girls song isn’t memorable either, but that may be because this was around the time I moved to Australia so they weren’t a relevant chart force over here :lol:

Disc 2

1. Bounce/Save The World

2. Give Me Everything

3. Beautiful People

4. Louder

5. Super Bass

Another brilliant track list, Bounce & Save The World are tied at the top as both are two of my favourite dance singles ever. I could live without LMFAO but they suffered from being extremely overplayed (as was Redfoo’s solo material) and I got sick of them quickly :P Beautiful People is the best thing to come from Chris Brown but that’s mainly to do with Benny Benassi :dance:

Artwork: 6/10

It’s not the worst but there’s far to many bright vibrant colours attacking me all at the same time and makes it a bit of an eyesore. A nice concept, but as usual with many Now covers it’s poorly executed

Overall: 8/10

The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Enrique, Parade, Paramore, Arctic Monkeys, and Foster The People would’ve been nice additions but Just Can’t Get Enough and Born This Way were big enough hits anyway. Beyoncé is rarely on a Now, and none of the rest were really big hits anyway... not a bad Now :lol:

Artwork - 7/10

Disc 1 Favourite - Coldplay - Every Teardrop is a Waterfall

Disc 2 Favourite - Katy B - Broken Record

Overall - 8/10
