Posted April 13, 20187 yr https://www.theguardian.com/media/2018/apr/...of-blood-speech Calls for Radio 4 to cancel show that will critique anti-immigration speech 50 years on
April 13, 20187 yr Yes provided they place it in context which from the article it seems they are doing. The BBC are obviously not endorsing the speech.
April 13, 20187 yr We can't ignore something historic just because it's a sensitive topic or contains outdated views, everything significant deserves to be analysed. That speech was undeniably extremely impactful in it's time in history and is worthy of analysis and critique.
April 13, 20187 yr As I understand it the BBC will be examining the speech and its impact. That seems to be a perfectly reasonable subject for Radio 4 to cover and it would be hard to do so without being able to quote the speech itself.
April 13, 20187 yr Author I wonder how many people even know what was said - certainly few people under 60 probably would.
April 13, 20187 yr A few key sections of it have been quoted many times, not least when the racist old goat died.
April 13, 20187 yr Author A few key sections of it have been quoted many times, not least when the racist old goat died. Even so, surely it'd be better to get the full context?
April 13, 20187 yr I won't be nostalgically revisiting the hate speech of a detestable human being moaning about members of the British Empire coming to the "home country" because they were black. At least the old racist, who I loathed as a child, a teenager, and an adult, lived to see his crap lies and outrageous claims shown to be not the end of the white master race at all. Speaking on behalf of non-whites who were around at that time (and they were very very much in the minority) they suffered unavoidable awful racism thanks to the likes of hate-justifiers like Powell.
April 13, 20187 yr Even so, surely it'd be better to get the full context? Read what I said earlier.
April 13, 20187 yr Just to point out that racism in politics is still a thing: ITV News Verified account @itvnews Follow Follow @itvnews More 'I'm British and have lived here nearly all my life, so why must I leave?' Glenda Caesar is part of the 'Windrush Generation', one of thousands of Caribbean immigrants who now face an uncertain future https://bit.ly/2GQxy1H They had a right to come here, and now have had that right removed. Thanks Mrs May, on behalf of all the ageing British people coming from countries invaded by the UK exercising their rights and then getting tossed out because the UK failed to give them documents or keep records of when people entered the country, despite records on schooling and taxes paid over 50 years or more. That's our Prime Minister behind all this policy. The one that has failed to stop non-EU citizens coming to work in the UK, as she had the power to do. Just has a problem with old black people, apparently.
April 14, 20187 yr Author Read what I said earlier. You mentioned examining the speech, but I didn't think it was clear you meant the whole thing in context?

April 14, 20187 yr You mentioned examining the speech, but I didn't think it was clear you meant the whole thing in context? It would be hard to conduct a proper examination of the speech's impact without putting it in context.
April 14, 20187 yr Author It would be hard to conduct a proper examination of the speech's impact without putting it in context. Precisely - although its debatable how well the 1968 context will translate to a 2018 audience. Edited April 14, 20187 yr by vidcapper
April 14, 20187 yr Precisely - although its debatable how well the 1968 context will translate to a 2018 audience. Piece of cake. people in 1968 had no experience of non-white people in the main, having never been abroad, and racist lies spread by people like Powell spread fear deliberately with the aim to exclude non-whites from the country and shit-stir. I think that about sums it up.

I think that about sums it up. That's certainly one aspect of it.
April 14, 20187 yr Precisely - although its debatable how well the 1968 context will translate to a 2018 audience. I'm sure many schoolchildren would want to adapt this argument to justify why they shouldn't have to study Shakespeare.
April 14, 20187 yr Author Lord Adonis is not happy about this! AIUI Ofcom can only act retrospectively, though.
April 14, 20187 yr I think broadcasting it on it's anniversary is wrong, as if it's something of note rather than something shite, but it should form part of history courses in the same way as slavery and the holocaust should. I was recently shocked to hear how many Americans had no idea about the Holocaust and how it came about (it's a large percentage of the population)
