All 5 members of the record breaking Spice Girls went forward to release music outside the group.

I have listed the first song released by each member outside the Spice Girls.

Which of the 5 songs is the Best Solo Spice!

Please Vote and leave some comments.

(Melanie C's would be When You're Gone if you're counting What I Am & Out of Your Mind as Emma and Victoria's debuts respectively :kink: )

Melanie C's is When You're Gone not Going Down...

It's either

1. Look at me (Geri)

2. Going down (Melanie C)

3. Word up (Melanie B)

4. What took you so long (Emma)

5. Not such an innocent girl (Victoria)

or

1. Look at me (Geri)

2. Going down (Melanie C)

3. I want you back (Mel B)

4. What I am (Emma)

5. Out of your mind (Victoria)

I would choose either WTYSL or WYG lol and neither option is available!

None of their debuts except Victoria are their best for me but Emma's is my fave from these songs. Mel c when you're gone would be my fave if on the poll I love that doing.
I voted for 'Look At Me' but, had it been listed, 'When You're Gone' would've won my vote by miles.

Sincere apologies for mixing up Goin Down.

I wrongly had thought When You're Gone was released after Goin Down.

I vote for Look At Me by Geri.

I don't like any of those other debut singles, but they all went on to do songs that I would like.

Out of Your Mind BLOWS all of these OUT THE WATER and then some!! Best solo Spice track EVER and y'all will deal

Thank you mods for editing the poll to have When You're Gone.

This would easily be the best song here too.

With the distance of time, I have to say 'What I Am' is actually my favourite. I have a playlist on my Spotify called 'Feel Good' and this is on there, Emma and the Tin Tin Out boys were such a good collaboration, it was not too dissimilar to their remixes for The Corrs which is probably why I liked it so much. It's just a shame it got overshadowed by a weak single of Geri's that only ended up at #1 because of that ridiculous Chris Evans business.

Eek, I think it's a reach to claim that! I don't believe most people would spend money on a single simply because of tabloid gossip? Geri was doing a ton of promotion otherwise. She also had the benefit of a CD1/CD2/cassette release - Emma's only had one CD (+ cassette and vinyl), so that was an immediate disadvantage.

I think the most beneficial factor for both of them was the chart battle itself. That created a lot of attention and I'm sure they both sold more because of it, than they necessarily would have if they'd released in separate weeks.

Geri sold 139,000 copies in its first week vs Emma's 106,000. Geri ultimately went on to sell 346,000 copies, whereas Emma sold 224,000 (both figures as of June 2017). So Geri beat her to the top by 33,000, and in the long term extended the sales gap between them to 122,000.

The sales for Lift Me Up are consistent when compared to her other Schizophonic releases:

First weeks:

142,153 - Look at Me

139,000 - Lift Me Up

132,500 - Mi Chico Latino

106,000 - Bag It Up

Totals:

383,000 - Mi Chico Latino (34.6% sold in week 1)

346,000 - Lift Me Up (40.2% sold in week 1)

326,000 - Look at Me (43.6% sold in week 1)

260,000 - Bag It Up (40.8% sold in week 1)

What I Am sold 47.32% of its sales in week 1. To me, that suggests that it was bolstered by being released alongside Geri, but ultimately it wasn't destined to be an enduring hit.

Comparing chart runs (xx represents a week outside of the Top 100):

01-04-07-14-23-29-42-39-35-39-54-65-60-61-71-xx-61-68-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-98-98 [Geri Halliwell - Lift Me Up]

02-09-15-23-39-51-57-48-45-45-38-38-82 [Emma Bunton - What I Am]

It appears that Emma got the bargain bin treatment to re-enter the Top 40 for a couple of weeks! So at least she experienced two weeks of outselling Lift Me Up. :kink:

On Radio Airplay, Lift Me Up was significantly bigger despite What I Am having a headstart:

xx-41-21-07-03-03-05-09-17-22-22-31-32 [Geri Halliwell - Lift Me Up]

48-38-30-12-06-08-15-22-48 [Emma Bunton - What I Am]

At the end of the day, Geri had a very dedicated fan base during that first era. I don't think it's fair to discredit Lift Me Up's #1 status based on who she was rumoured to be dating!

While we're on the subject of Lift Me Up, something nice that stands out to me about that single campaign was her performing it using sign language.

This SO much!

As a deaf boy growing up I loved that Geri did this so much. The Spice Girls also had an interpreter at their Spiceworld concerts on the screens which I have never seen since in any concert I've attended.

I’d go -

1. Look At Me

2. Out Of Your Mind

3. What I Am

4. I Want You Back

5. Goin’ Down

I’d go -

1. Look At Me

2. Out Of Your Mind

3. What I Am

5. Goin’ Down

It's When you're gone not going down.

1. Out Of Your Mind

(2. Goin' Down)

2. I Want You Back

3. Look At Me

4. What I Am

5. When You're Gone

3. What i am

4. I want you back

5. Out of your mind
