The highest 5SOS song was Want You Back at #43 I'm afraid! Their highest EOY position since 2015, where She's Kinda Hot was #40.

35 Tom Odell feat. Alice Merton - Half As Good As You | 37-5-3-2-4-8-16-24-35-… (9+ weeks)

The lead single from Tom Odell's third studio album, If You Wanna Love Somebody, had a strong start in my chart, debuting at #2, but it tailed off quicker than the typical Tom Odell single. My hype for the album wasn't quite as high as I expected it to be. However, all it takes is one song to change that, and here we are. Half As Good As You made an instant impact on me when it got released as the second single, shooting into the top 5 and quickly matching the peak of its predecessor, though its longevity was notably better. It also became the first top 10 hit for Alice Merton, who sounds fantastic alongside Tom on the track. It's my favourite track on the album, and was a definite highlight on the Jubilee Road tour!

34 Kylie Minogue - Dancing | 2-6-11-24-34-25-31-x-35-x (8 non-consecutive weeks)

One of the best comebacks of the year, Kylie Minogue kickstarted her 30th year in music with the barnstorming anthem Dancing. I had high hopes - Kylie always delivers on lead singles, and I really loved Into the Blue back in 2014, but Dancing still managed to exceed my expectations. Dancing sees Kylie blend her traditional pop music with huge choruses, alongside country music, and the result is fantastic. Dancing was the encore to her Golden Tour, and it closed a brilliant show in spectacular style. The track charted at #2 in my chart, losing out on the top to Troye Sivan's My My My!, but it became Kylie's highest charting single to date, outdoing 2012's #4 hit Timebomb.

33 Avril Lavigne - Head Above Water | 1-2-5-7-12-22-27-40-x (8 weeks)

I wasn't really sure what to expect from an Avril Lavigne comeback. I adore loads of her tracks, and she has one of the best singles discographies around. Tracks like My Happy Ending and Girlfriend define my childhood, while When You're Gone and (album track) Innocence are among my favourite ballads of all-time. Head Above Water leaned towards the latter tracks, and was all the better for doing so. Avril opened up about her battle with Lyme disease, and it resulted in one of her most emotional tracks yet. As a result, the track became Avril's very first #1 in my chart (though it's worth noting that, much like Kate Nash, she'd have an array of #1s if my chart started sooner), doing so in just half a week. A triumphant return, and it has me very excited for Avril's forthcoming album, also called Head Above Water.

32 Charli XCX & Troye Sivan - 1999 | 2-2-7-12-19-21-23-25-… (8+ weeks)

1999 has to be one of the unluckiest #2 hits of 2018 in my chart. Charli XCX and Troye Sivan's superb team-up was a brilliant dose of nostalgia with one of the most infectious choruses of the year. A huge shoutout to Troye's middle 8 too, he totally delivers. All of this is before that music video too - the best of the year quite possibly? Definitely a contender anyway. It was brilliant to see Charli getting such a big hit after trying so long, and it couldn't have been more well-deserved in my opinion. Troye getting a top 20 hit at last was even better, obviously I root for him so much! As for my own chart, a #2 debut gave Charli her highest position as a lead artist since Doing It made #1 in 2015. So how is this unlucky? In most weeks, it actually would have been a #1. It ran into Froy Gutierrez's sideswipe, in the week that I met him (more on that earlier in the topic), and as a result it spent two weeks behind sideswipe in my chart. Bad timing, but an amazing song and one that could quite possibly have saved Charli's chart career. Charli and Troye both have two more songs to come each.

31 Troye Sivan - Lucky Strike | 32-2-4-10-16-23-30-x (7 weeks)

Double Troye! The impact of Lucky Strike here is pretty impressive, as by the cut-off point for my EOY, it was nothing more than an album track from Troye's Bloom album. It zoomed to #2 when the album came out and notched up a solid run, cementing itself as one of the best Bloom tracks. However, since then, it received a music video and became the album's fourth single, seeing it back into my top 10, sat at #5 in my current chart (week 371). Lucky Strike clicked with me through the brilliant production and the relaxed tone of Troye's voice, and of course the hook: "Tell me all the ways to love you." It's lush and so infectious, and I think I'll be looking back on Lucky Strike as one of Troye's very best songs in years to come.

30 Anne-Marie - 2002 | 2-3-5-9-13-20-28-30-35-x (9 weeks)

For reasons that still aren't totally clear to me, Anne-Marie's 2002 turned into one of Buzzjack's biggest hate figures of the year. However, I loved it from the get-go. The Ed Sheeran co-write set the tone for nostalgia tracks in 2018, becoming an instant hit in the charts with references to iconic songs from the turn of the millennium. The fact some of the references aren't from 2002 doesn't bother me, I see it as generally reminiscing back to that time period, which includes 2002, rather than specifically that year. Regardless, the chorus is one of the biggest sing-along pop moments of the year and I'm so pleased it cemented Anne-Marie's status as one of the biggest females in pop currently, as it's hard to find someone who brings a more fun, quirky personality to chart music than her.

29 Marcus & Martinus - Remind Me | 3-6-16-23-33-x (5 weeks)

In terms of chart runs, this one does stick out quite a bit in the top 40. It's the shortest top 40 run of any track here, so why is it so high up? I've actually been talking about "trickle sales" a lot throughout this thread; I don't actually track "sales figures" for my songs, and this chart is not made up of play counts, but they do influence where I place these songs and Remind Me ended up becoming one of my most played songs of the year, helped along by regular plays each week, though never enough to re-enter my top 40. Marcus & Martinus seemed to master this in 2018, with 2017 hit Make You Believe in Love achieving 151 of its total 210 scrobbles in 2018. That's one hell of an accolade, with Remind Me scoring 107 plays, finishing 23rd in my most played tracks of the 2018 calendar year. Why has this song caught on so much though? Remind Me wasn't even on the original edition of Marcus & Martinus' Moments album, but it got added to the end after its February release last year. What I love is just how carefree and fun it is. It's a song about looking back over your good memories with someone close to you, and it's pop at its finest.

28 Jennifer Lopez feat. DJ Khaled & Cardi B - Dinero | 2-3-6-12-18-25-32-36-35-37-x (10 weeks)

One of the most quotable tracks of the year, Jennifer Lopez's Dinero brought three icons together for an absolutely huge anthem. I'd heard rumours of this collaboration for a few months beforehand and it excited me a lot - J-Lo can provide some excellent bops when she wants to, Cardi rarely disappoints and Khaled is forever iconic. Of course, Khaled brings some of his catchphrases to the track ("another one"), while also shouting "CASH FLOW" over the top of the chorus *.* Cardi's verse is absolute fire ("Cardi B and J-Lo"), and J-Lo herself is on absolute top form, releasing her best song since 2013's Live It Up. I think this would've been an easy hit had the credits been swapped and J-Lo relegated to feature, but nevertheless, it became a #2 hit in my chart, with Cardi blocking herself from the top with Rita Ora collaboration Girls.

27 Shawn Mendes - In My Blood | 1-2-4-9-15-23-30-33-20-17-23-28-38-x (13 weeks)

Debuting at #1, Shawn Mendes' third era was highly anticipated and lead single In My Blood set the tone brilliantly. I loved it from the first listen, the more mature sound marking a notable contrast from the songs that had so far defined Shawn's career (Stitches, Treat You Better, There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back). I could understand why it perhaps didn't catch on with the public as much as those tracks (not that it flopped by any means!), but nevertheless I was delighted when it became a top 10 hit officially. It was Shawn's fourth #1 single in my chart, following Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart), Stitches and Treat You Better, and remains the highest charting track from this campaign which descended into a total mess following this single's release. I'm so excited to see Shawn on tour in April...and meet him! :o

26 Isac Elliot - Mouth to Mouth | 12-11-6-2-1-4-7-12-21-28-35-x (11 weeks)

The first #1 of 2018 proved to be a bit of a surprise, yet also it's something that's felt like a long time coming. Finnish pop sensation Isac Elliot has continued a steady stream of hits since his debut single, New Way Home, became a #3 hit in my chart in 2013 when he was just 13 years old. Every year since (including 2019 already), Isac's achieved a new top 10 hit, but he was lacking a #1 single. Mouth to Mouth came in late 2017, and debuted at #12. At that point, it was better than his previous two singles AYO (#23), EYES SHUT (#36) and I Wrote a Song for You (DNC), but was training behind SHE (#9) from earlier that year. However, unlike all of those mentioned, Mouth to Mouth actually climbed, reaching the top 10 in week 3 and finally climbing to #1 in the first week of 2018, its fifth week on the chart. Mouth to Mouth became Isac's very first #1 single after almost 5 years of waiting, fuelled by the release of the album FAITH, which includes all of the singles mentioned from 2017 (as well as every other single since his previous album in 2014). It's such an energetic pop track, the breakdown providing a unique yet irresistible moment, highlighting just how strong the production on this track is, yet showing a notable maturity compared to his very early stuff. As a result, Isac achieves his best EOY placing since New Way Home started his chart career in 2013!

25 Matteo Markus Bok - El Ritmo (AHI AHI AHI) | 1-3-6-11-16-22-31-39-38-33-31-x (11 weeks)

Now here's a #1 single that really did come out of the blue. Italian popstar Matteo Markus Bok first arrived in my chart in the final week of December 2017 with a song called Just One Lie, which debuted and peaked at #3. After that, he pretty much fell off my radar. Just One Lie felt like a fleeting hit during the dead period for music that is new year, and I hadn't seen anything about new music on social media either. Randomly, at the start of September, I opted to check if he'd released anything else. I found this song, El Ritmo (AHI AHI AHI), on Spotify, and took a listen. I was impressed from the word go. The "ahi ahi ahi" (pronounced ay ay ay but spelt weirdly x) parts are extremely catchy and the switching between English and Spanish lyrics works surprisingly brilliantly. The track became a #1 hit instantly, the first of a record-matching four that Matteo achieved in the calendar year 2018 (though the latter two will feature in 2019's EOY). Matteo still has one more song to come - how will In the Middle fare?

24 Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey - The Middle | 18-2-1-6-8-16-23-24-23-25-36-x (11 weeks)

Zedd's been pretty hit-and-miss for me over the years. My favourite tracks of his had mostly been his features with Ariana Grande and Hailee Steinfeld, and his big chart hits were good but never especially exciting for me. The Middle instantly made me curious, though. I hadn't enjoyed previous single Get Low much at all, but Zedd had enlisted country singer Maren Morris to provide vocals here. I love Maren's voice, and was so intrigued to hear what she sounded like on a dance track. I absolutely loved the end result, too. It was Zedd's most instant track for me, and saw it chart at #1 in its second full week in my chart. It was Zedd's second #1, following Break Free, and both Maren Morris and Grey's first. It became Zedd's best track to date for me, and although it seems to get a lot of hate here (mostly for being a Stay clone when I actually find this is an improved version of that), I'll always defend it. It's actually not Zedd's highest track, though...!
