Buddy Holly finally tops my chart almost 60 years since he died, with the song that he recorded in his final recording session in 1958 along with his two other best tracks, True Love Ways, It Doesn't Matter Anymore and Raining In My Heart. All were released posthumously, True Love Ways in 1960, and indicate he was an artist just getting into his creative stride. The new version is pristine, it sounds like it was recorded yesterday and does away with my problem with most 50's tracks: they sounded old even when I was a kid such was the improvement in recording techniques by the late 60's. It's not actually the oldest release to top my chart - that's Neil Sedaka's Oh Carol which topped my chart in 1972, a mere 13 years later. That's the equivalent of a 14-year-old getting into a reissue of, say, Scissor Sisters, Britney Spears or Gwen Stefani right now - acts who topped my chart in 2004! It is, though, the oldest recorded record to top my chart, and only the second track from the fifties.

Highest new entry is track selling on itunes right now following a Proclaimers programme on BBC4, the gorgeous Sunshine On Leith, 30 years on from first making top 10, but well under-appreciated chart-wise in the UK at the time. Now it's a movie title based on Proclaimers songs! Highest new track is Mark Ronson back, giving him 11 years of chart entries, while Miley Cyrus joins her sister in my chart, 10 years after starting her chart career with a trio of top 10's before becoming less consistent. Don Diablo returns, along with Emeli Sande, who is making it a 7-year-run. The Crystals bring their 60's Christmas classic back for the 3rd time in 5 years, and 44 years since Da Doo Ron Ron made my charts a decade late, Aerosmith's 70's track Dream On finally charts 40 years late as for some reason it's selling on itunes and I've never charted it. Return of the week, though, are The O'Jays, huge faves of mine in the early 70's with Philly classics topping my chart like Backstabbers in 1972 and Love Train in 1973. Now a duo, they return with new social-minded material, as their best stuff was, and get a first appearance in my chart since 1984, a whopping absence of 34 years. To put that in dark perespective, Eddie Levert's two sons had a chart career as Levert in the interim, and both died in the noughties, while Eddie is still recording and touring with The O'Jays 50 years since starting his chart career.

Hello John!

Good to see "Survive" and "Speechless" debut!

Both are great songs right now!

Great chart!

Hi John!

Nice to see Diamond Heart at #2 - I really wasn't a fan at first but it's grown on me nicely, a great song!

Don't think I've heard Sunshine on Leith before - giving a listen now, a beautiful song :o Although part of the instrumental dos sound a bit like 'We Wish You A Merry Christmas'!

I see lots of BJSC here again - Favela, Punk Right Now and Tere Naal Nachna were particular faves of mine!

Don't think I've heard anything of Jamie N Commons since that Kungs feature, Paper Dreams is sounding nice though

Great chart :D

Hi Pete, thanks for the comments, and Diamond Heart is a real grower for me, 8 weeks on and it just tops my chart, that's quite unusual most tracks decline before 8 weeks :o

I'd never noticed that xmas similarity for Leith - maybe that's why I love it so much!

Yes lots of BJSC tracks in my charts, quite a few bubbling under not quite crossing over as well - I still like them but not every record i like charts if there are others I like more, oops, ruthless!

cheers!

John B-)
