It's the start of a new year which of course means that the charts are at their dullest still. Okay well there's stuff happening but the only stuff that is, is all the old favourites being back up. We do however in an exciting turn of events have a new #1 single. Post Malone & Swae Lee climb to #1 with "Sunflower" this week as they were briefly blocked by Mariah Carey, who unsurprisingly now has the first ever single to drop from #1 all the way out of the top 100. "Sunflower" is Post Malone's 3rd #1 hit following "rockstar" and "Psycho", and it's Swae Lee's first by any measure, he reached #3 with Rae Sremmurd on "Black Beatles", and both "Unforgettable" and if you want to count "SICKO MODE" peaked at #7. Ava Max debuted on the same week as them and is now sitting behind at #2. I cannot say yet whether she can get to #1 as she is still making upward progress, but isn't really catching up yet. Speaking of Post Malone, because he was excluded from the chart for no reason last week, he has this week's highest debut, courtesy of "Wow." which rides high despite not even ranking in the top 40 digital chart, as people are too busy buying "Thunder" and "Perfect" instead. Actually "I Fall Apart" and "Better Now" outsold it. This week is also a rare case where we have 4 (or if you want to be generous with "1999") Australian entries in the top 20, as Hilltop Hoods and KIAN both reach the threshold this week. Dean Lewis has had the highest charting Australian single for about 5 months straight, and he's now been overtaken by the song he succeeded in the first place, "Youngblood".

Noteworthy week on the album chart too as there's a new #1 also. In fact it's also an album that gets there in its 11th week and it's the soundtrack to "Bohemian Rhapsody", which has been holding the fort behind "A Star Is Born" for most of that #1 reign. In doing so they protect Adele's record for the longest consecutive run at #1 for the decade. We've also got an entire top 6 of movie soundtrack related albums, with the otherwise highest being...Ed Sheeran. The Christmas clear out isn't quite as drastic as on the singles chart but it does help the Spider-Man soundtrack & 21 Savage reach new peaks this week.

Oh and if you're wondering about Year End charts, I have no idea but they should be out soon. I'll stick them in the 2018 thread as soon as I can get my hands on them.

Ooh it's nice to see 'Sunflower' reaching #1 somewhere! I heard a bit of that Hilltop Hoods song on a Spotify advert the other day, the absolute AUDACITY of that sample...

(hello I am going to attempt to remember to read this thread and occasionally comment on it this year :hi: nice to see the Australian charts are still excluding songs at random)

It's a tuneeeeee

Youngblood's chart run... just because 34 weeks Top 20. Even more impressive that it didn't fall during the Christmas takeover

46-26-24-9-3-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-2-2-3-3-3-4-3-6-6-10-13-14-15-14-17-18-16-19-17-16-16-17-17-13

For comparison Shape of You 'only' had 30 weeks Top 20 and it was non-consecutively (he re-entered the Top 20 twice)

Also as a 2018 comparison God's Plan only spent 33 weeks in the Top 50

Edited by DexTheHalls

it does seem like every time an Australian act gets a worldwide hit they spend forever in the Australian chart, that chart run is ridiculous and Dean Lewis is still top 20 too.

Last week's new #1's have become this week's incumbent #1's. For Post Malone, this makes "Sunflower" overtake "Psycho"'s 1 week reign at #1 but it will have to do quite a bit of work to match "rockstar"'s 7 weeks. Particularly as Warner aren't giving up the fight and have discounted "Sweet But Psycho" for the past week on iTunes. There was a time when discounts on the Australian iTunes store were more copious than anywhere else but there are only 6 in the top 100 right now compared to 15 in the UK. However "Sweet But Psycho" will need second wind in streaming to stand a real chance at the moment. The other threat to Post Malone could be...Post Malone. "Wow." is going a bit slowly for digital sales, but is riding at #2 on Spotify which could be a strong vantage point if the competition does finally succumb to the fact that it's rather old. Then again, "Shotgun", "eastside" and "SICKO MODE" are all in the top 10 so do songs age anymore? Of course, it's hard for there to be much change in the top 10 when #11-#16 are all former top 10 hits, the next highest is KIAN's extremely Spotify assisted hit "Waiting" which after 4 months in the ARIA top 50, commercial radio have finally realised that they can play it. Actually there's quite a concentration of Australian artists in this section of the chart, #14-#19 having 5 different ones (and Rita Ora performed at the ARIA Awards!!). Also in a good upswing for Australian music, there are only 2 top 50 new entries this week, the first of which comes from Guy Sebastian who scores his first top 50 hit in over 2 years with "Before I Go". The other is the unexpected return to the charts for both NOTD & Felix Jaehn, both scoring their 2nd hits (or 3rd for Felix if you want to count "Cheerleader" which you probably should). One of my favourite songs of 2018, "Soaked" by Bene is this week's loser in the lottery of 'will ARIA arbitrarily acknowledge your presence', I can only hope that more attention will be paid to her streaming success now that she's about to crack the New Zealand top 40, but at least they remembered to count Chris Brown's new single.

The top 6 hegemony of soundtrack related albums continues but with the exciting twist that "The Platinum Collection" has overtaken "Greatest Hits" to score a new peak. Post Malone overtakes Ed Sheeran for the honour of highest album just after all that stuff, although we can't deny the possibility that he's tangentially benefitting from Into The Spider-Verse. Taylor Swift also returns to the top 10 courtesy of her Netflix special I believe. Something I neglected to mention regarding the Year-End charts last week is that Billie Eilish snuck into the top 100 with her EP, but she should have been a lot higher. ARIA only randomly decided to count her streams 4 months ago, but I've no doubt that just like in New Zealand she should have been riding high in the chart for pretty much all of 2018 and then some. One can only wonder just how legitimate it is, but she does manage to score a new peak this week. Tune in next week as the album chart looks exactly the same again.

You can probably sit this week's chart out. "Sunflower" is #1 for a 3rd week and meanwhile in all of the top 15, there are only 3 sets of 2 songs swapping places. All 3 involve an older song overtaking a newer one. A reprieve should probably come next week. Not just because iTunes has finally stopped promoting its top 100 of 2018, meaning that the sales charts will no longer be cluttered with old songs ("I Fall Apart" dropped from about #30 to #160 in 2 days). Also because we might have a new #1 courtesy of Ariana Grande. "7 rings" has gotten off to a big start on sales and streaming and should absolutely be #1 next week, the only thing that might stop it is badly counted week one streams. Sam Smith does well to win in the illustrious stakes of ARIA acknowledging his music, as he has two debuts this week, firstly his Normani duet in the top 50, and then his soundtrack single whose playlist promotion was aborted the moment the former came out, but not enough to keep it out of the chart this week. Gesaffelstein gets his first lead artist chart entry alongside The Weeknd on "Lost In The Fire", which is his 3rd top 50 hit overall, following two other Weeknd collaborations from last year. People who use the phrase 'real music' unironically face a dilemma, as their glorious authentic bin man has teamed up with the synthetic production work of Calvin Harris. For the former this is his 2nd top 50 hit to date, and stands a good chance to surpass the #17 peak of "Human" in the near future. In a rare case of success of a non A-list star, Dominic Fike's "3 Nights" has quickly gained traction, largely on Apple rather than Spotify so maybe it's more organic than usual. If he makes it into triple j's Hottest 100 on Sunday I will readily accept that the song that just cracked the top 50 is genuinely popular.

There was also an album chart published this week. Billie Eilish scored another new peak.

What a boring chart. Day Drunk falling just 6 places is the biggest movement in the entire Top 35 and even then only Imagine and 3 Nights (what is this song?) make any substantial movement in the Top 50

Welcome to the calm before the storm. Well as calm as you can be when there's a #1 debut, but honestly the top 20 is pretty stagnant outside of songs making room for new arrivals. Let's talk about that new arrival too, as this week Ariana Grande has scored her 3rd #1 single, two of which are #1 debuts, all of which have been in the past year. "7 rings" features an interpolation of "My Favorite Things", which hasn't been seen in the ARIA Chart since The Avalanches did the same thing in 2016. Ariana does the double by topping the sales & streaming charts individually, which will be the key to her longevity as a lot of the tough contenders in each component are sorely lacking on the other. With a huge lead on streams, Ariana is safely #1 in the near future. The week that "thank u, next" debuted at #1, "God is a woman" re-entered the top 100. One single ahead, this time it's "breathin" that re-enters. The only other noteworthy news in the top 10 is that Sam Smith scores his 6th top 10 hit with "Dancing With A Stranger", also Normani's 2nd (or 4th if you include Fifth Harmony). I should also address the fact that Benny Blanco's "Eastside" has spent its 24th non-consecutive week at #1, making it the equal 2nd longest running top 10 hit of all time, only 1 week behind "Perfect". George Ezra is also up to 23 weeks with "Shotgun". When I mentioned the calm before the storm, that's in reference to the fact that over the weekend, triple j's Hottest 100 happened. It happens every year, which is long enough between instances that I feel obliged to explain that it's the world's largest annual music poll (2.7 million votes this year), and always stands as the time of the year that the most amount of people are actively listening to the same songs (in Australia...and honestly maybe the world). Because the countdown was a day later in the week compared to last year to avoid Australia Day (an increasingly loathed public holiday for what it represents), songs are mostly working in catch up mode and might have their impact spread across two weeks. The biggest beneficiary is unsurprisingly Ocean Alley as their song "Confidence" took the top spot. This is in itself quite a peculiarity because by the time voting had closed (thus all votes were in), the song had never even entered the ARIA top 100 (though it is gold certified). For the last 10 years prior to this, all the winning songs had at least hit the top 40, so there's a lot of room to grow as their #93 debut this week shot to #1 on iTunes and also has reached the top 5 on Apple & Spotify. It may be able to reach the ARIA top 10 this week. However every song in the countdown gets at least a little bit of kickback (except Nothing But Thieves' cover which isn't on available as a single on iTunes or Spotify ~) and runner up FISHER stands a chance to enter the top 50, meaning we'll have 2 Australian artists scoring their first top 50 hit in the same week. By comparison, in all of 2018 we had just 3 (one of which was Gang Of Youths just narrowly sneaking in after their Hottest 100 performance). But wait there's more on the chart. 5 Seconds Of Summer's "Lie To Me" climbs into the top 50, prior to this they had a weirdly dubious stat that their first and last top 50 hits were #1 hits, as their "Youngblood" follow up "Valentine" couldn't crack the top 50. The Chainsmokers also get yet another top 50 entry from their latest album with "Hope". They are yet again boosted heavily by Spotify's insistence that they're still the next big thing, 8 of the album's 10 tracks have been on Hot Hits Australia in the past year, though to their credit "Hope" isn't right near the top as they tend to be. Also in the midst of the big battle between 4 very closely ranked songs to be the highest Australian song, KIAN nearly got his first week as #1, except he's had that snatched this week by Dean Lewis's new single, which is off to a quicker start than "Be Alright" though I suspect it will not get as high in the end. Another noteworthy thing that happened this week is that Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" (also known as "SICKO MODE" for baby boomers) has now spent longer in the chart in the years following, than it did in its original 1975 run. If an astute maths observer notices that this chart says that it doesn't make any sense because it's on an even number for its WI, know that ARIA doesn't tend to count #51-#100 positions from the pre-ARIA era in its WI calculations. Also for the weekly check up on everything that ARIA is doing wrong, we have new additions to the canon of missing songs, with A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie's "Look Back At It" (probably should be top 50) and Seeb's "Grip" (probably should be top 100). Bene currently has the cover photo on Hot Hits Australia but apparently that still doesn't warrant inclusion in our national charts. Maybe next week.

As for the album chart, "Bohemian Rhapsody" dropped from #1 to #7 on digital albums (and "A Star Is Born" is back at #1) but amazingly it still holds the top spot here. The latter seems to be riding another wave of popularity so maybe it'll return to #1 next week...except oh wait! We actually have a noteworthy non-soundtrack album coming out. Bring Me The Horizon's album "amo" was released last week and they've had a perfect run of #1 albums for this whole decade. In 2010 they set the record for the lowest weekly sales for a #1 album at that point (3,600 sales), but their next two albums with more triple j airplay on their side both more than justified their #1 debuts and have been certified gold and platinum respectively. I haven't seen sales figures in months so I don't really know what they're competing against, but certainly they're in with a chance. As for new entries this week, we have a fresh album in the top 10! Maggie Rogers has never made the chart before at all but has won over many fans with successive singles in the past 2 and a half years as she enters at #8. For an even longer run of building a fanbase, we go to Australian band Cub Sport at #12. I've been across this band since 2011. Back then they were called Cub Scouts (they had to change because of copyright with the actual Scouts). In recent years they've had a massive transformation in their sound and musical approach. With gay marriage being legalised in Australia a year ago, two members of the band have since married, and a lot of their songs lately talk about their love, connecting to a lot more people than when they were just a solid if less distinct indie pop band. This self-titled album is actually their 3rd, but it's their first to make the ARIA top 50. Also reaching the top 40 this week are James Blake & Future, both declining from higher charting prior albums, particularly James Blake who has gone as high as #5 with his 2nd album. There are also a lot of albums re-entering the chart which I can't entirely explain. Shout out however to mid 2000s Australian music fans, as vinyl releases bring back Missy Higgins' first two albums, and Silverchair's most recent album, all 3 of which are former monster selling #1 hits. Phil Collins has a massive climb in the top 50 due to his recent tour. As for next week, in addition to Bring Me The Horizon, look out for a new entry from Backstreet Boys, and a big re-entry and possibly new peak for Ocean Alley.

Oh your post in the NZ thread makes sense now. Boo at 'Soaked' being excluded from this chart :(

So what exactly gave 'Confidence' a boost this week, since Hottest 100 wasn't during the tracking week? Was it already gaining on sales or streams during the week?

I started listening to Confidence a lot the week before the Hottest 100 basically because it was an almost sure win, I imagine lots of other people thought the same

Yeah there's kind of a pre-Hottest 100 effect nowadays. I think it's a combination of people looking into the favourite for #1, and also people who were already fond of it listening to it as they vote or decide their votes (Hottest 100 voting peaks on the final day so it makes sense that it would climb the most while nearing the countdown. Primarily it was doing well on streams, getting into the top 100 on Spotify for the first time. From what I remember, I tended to see it around #200-#300 on iTunes in the lead up.

Avalanches below, business continues above. This week we reach the aftermath of triple j's Hottest 100, the only music poll big enough to make a substantial annual impact on a national chart. Even songs with no relation to the countdown were all losing 5-10% of their Spotify streams on the 27th of January as people shifted their music listening focus for a whole day. Before I get to that though, Ariana Grande retains the #1 spot for a 2nd week. She has slipped down to #2 on sales behind "Shallow" but maintains a monstrous lead on streaming that will be hard to top. Potential competition isn't really showing itself as Post Malone & Ava Max retain the remaining top 3 spots. "Wow." returns to its #4 peak but still shows no sign of overtaking "Sunflower". The only new peaks in the top 10 this week are at #6 & #9 (nice), both relating to the Hottest 100. Travis Scott scored his first ever entry in the poll (after finishing in the #101-#200 section 3 times last year) with "SICKO MODE" at #3, and off the back of this, it ascends from being one of the biggest selling #7 hits to being one of the biggest selling #6 hits. Ascending from a prior #7 peak to a #6 peak is the same thing Vance Joy did with "Riptide" after his #1 finish, which is the highest certified single to not reach the top 5. The other noteworthy climb comes from Ocean Alley with their #1 polling "Confidence" making one of the biggest ever jumps in the top 100 up 84 places to #9. This is the same peak reached by The Rubens' "Hoops" and in fact the last 8 Hottest 100 winners are top 10 peakers. Ocean Alley also make ARIA Chart history as their cover of Player's top 20 hit "Baby Come Back" becomes to my knowledge the first ever triple j Like A Version to make the ARIA Chart. It is not necessarily the most popular one, but it comes at a time as these covers have been getting more regularly available as singles, as triple j tends to put their Like A Version compilations up on iTunes with no individual purchases allowed. I do however recall that Regina Spektor charted briefly with "No Surprises" but that was a different recording to her Like A Version rendition. Noteworthy in its own right is the other Ocean Alley single "Knees", which is not on the chart at all because ARIA. It may have come relatively close to the top 50 so it's still not the biggest omission on the chart as Bene (who was in the Hottest 100 no less!) and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie are both top 40 on Spotify. Evidently for Ocean Alley, the #10 position in the Hottest 100 is cursed, because 2010's #10 finisher "Somebody To Love Me" from Mark Ronson & co. was also omitted from the chart back in the day. Ocean Alley become the first Australian artist to score their first top 50 single in 2019...and FISHER becomes the second with the biggest club hit of 2018 by an Australian artist "Losing It" bursts into the top 40, also already certified gold. In non-Hottest 100 news, J. Cole scores his highest ever charting single with "Middle Child" at #15, his previous highest being "KOD" at #20. In a moment of gracious relief, Ed Sheeran's "Perfect" has finally been pushed out of the top 50 in its 100th week on the chart, for the first time since being pushed as a single in late 2017. On the topic of Sheeran songs, "Eastside" is kicked out of the top 10 despite polling in the Hottest 100, preventing it from matching "Perfect"'s top 10 longevity for the time being. Despite being 30 weeks old, Hot Hits Australia on Spotify still insists on bolstering its streams, though it's not the oldest song there because they just added "Confidence", a song that only didn't reach the ARIA top 100 9 months ago because they never featured it in the first place.

There's a little less to note on the album chart although we do have a new #1 and it's actually not a movie soundtrack for once. On the other hand, it's still not anything new to the chart because while Bring Me The Horizon just scored their first UK #1 album, "Amo" is in fact their 4th Australian #1 album in a row. Once again they join the extremely mismatched company of artists who have scored at least 4 #1 albums in the 2010s, which includes Taylor Swift, Eminem, Lana Del Rey, One Direction and The Amity Affliction. Even without BMTH there'd be a shift because "A Star Is Born" has overtaken "Bohemian Rhapsody" again. Further breaking the soundtrack hegemony is Backstreet Boys. They are one of the more noteworthy artists to never have a #1 album here as they instead have 3 #2 albums. This is a feat that ties them with Dead Letter Circus, but leaves them way behind Radiohead who have 6 #2 albums without a #1. They can't quite add to this tally as their new album debuts at #5. Keith Urban's current Australian tour brings him back into the top 10, preventing Ocean Alley from reaching it for the first time, as their latest album hits a new peak of #11, having previously debuted at #15 last year. If you want to make Backstreet Boys look a lot better, then just glance at the monstrous decline for Rudimental, whose first two albums peaked at #2 & #4, while despite (although I choose to believe it's because of it) having their biggest hit to date, their very delayed 3rd album debuts at #41. A more painful revelation is that Weezer have scored their 4th self-titled top 50 album, which includes all of their self-titled albums except for The Blue Album.

"7 rings" retains the top spot for a 3rd week running. The vibe in the UK is that it will be the last week for it at #1 but I don't think that will be the case in Australia at all. "break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored" is indeed pulling a strong showing, but it's still lagging behind a little on Spotify, and the fact it will probably get 0 streams counted for Thursday means it has little chance to get there. A #2 debut seems reasonably likely though. "Sunflower" has been in the top 2 for 8 weeks in a row now and maybe it'll start slipping. What's also causing some interest in the top 10 is Billie Eilish. I was a little skeptical of her debuting prospects because a lot of her streams are being driven from a vertical video on Today's Top Hits & Hot Hits Australia, which count to her Spotify ranking but not her ARIA position. It turns out that she didn't really need those streams because she still lands at #3, making "bury a friend" her 3rd top 10 hit and highest ever charting single. She is still yet to ever reach the top 40 national airplay chart with any of her songs. In due process, she stops Post Malone from scoring a new peak fro "Wow." If you choose to count "7 rings" as one, then it has been close to 6 months since we last had a digital #1 single that didn't start with the letter S. "Shallow" continues to lead sales by a mile but it only barely holds in the top 10. Speaking of ancient singles that Australia can never let go of, KIAN's "Waiting" reaches the top 15 for the first time in its 6 month charting stint. He released a new single this week which appears like it won't make the top 200 because playlists aren't ready to switch over. Dean Lewis also trolls him again by blocking him from hitting #1 on the ARIA Australian Singles chart by 1 position. Maybe it's karma for calling it "the national ARIA Singles Chart" on his Spotify profile. There are 2 other new singles in the top 50, firstly Kehlani who scores her 3rd top 50 hit to date, and the first where she's not billed second with "Nights Like This". The other debut shouldn't be one, but someone at ARIA saw that there were two songs strangely missing from the top 50 and they decided to fix one of them. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie scores his first ever ARIA Singles Chart entry (to my recollection) with "Look Back At It". While we're talking about ARIA being silly with rappers, Tyga finally makes the chart...with "Girls Have Fun". "Taste" should certainly still be in the top 100 but oops. Between Tyga & A Boogie, 2 of this week's 3 top 100 debuts sort of reference Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun".

Not content with 9 weeks, "A Star Is Born"'s soundtrack cracks double digits as it has seemingly overtaken "Bohemian Rhapsody" for good, at least in terms of a time when they're in #1 contention, you can never truly tell which movie soundtracks will never die on the chart. With Bring Me The Horizon dropping off as expected, we're back to an entire top 5 of soundtrack related albums, but we have a new leader in terms of contemporary non-soundtrack music, and it's not even an album, but rather Billie Eilish's 2017 EP. It hits the top 10 for the first time in its sort of long but should be much longer run. We need not worry about a soundtrack monopoly next week, as it looks pretty safe to say that Ariana Grande will be scoring her 4th #1 album to date with "thank u, next" next week. Undoubtedly great news because there's no need to even consider the possibility that Sticky Fingers will get there. The highest debut this week is down at #13, where Within Temptation score their highest chart position to date at #13, having previously gotten as high as #26. The same fortunes can't be said for Broods who despite scoring their highest ever triple j Hottest 100 position with lead single "Peach", they're quite a bit down from past fortunes on their 3rd album debuting at #17, compared to the #5 & #2 debuts of their first two albums. I haven't listened to it yet but "Hospitalized" is an excellent track on it. Also obviously I have to mention that a peculiar Kidz Bop album has charted (the first ever I believe), which seems to be aimed at both the Australian & New Zealand markets because it has a Sheppard song and a Six60 song. I assume the real reason it's here is because "Be Alright"'s iTunes reviews are full of people outraged that Dean said a swear in the song, wishing for him to release a clean version. He hasn't done that but somewhere, a monkey's paw curled up a finger.

very good for Billie eilish, higher than in the UK or US

also her EP is #1 if you exclude all those Queen/soundtrack albums

Because the Australian charts are bad, Bene just came to the country to do some live shows/promo etc and is still missing from the chart. I refuse to stop being mad about this. In the world of artists that ARIA will acknowledge, Ariana Grande is quite popular. For the second time in her career, she's had her entire album make the ARIA top 100. If you choose to count "KIDS SEE GHOSTS" as a Kanye album (which you probably should), she's the 2nd artist to do this twice, and just like Kanye, one of those two albums also entirely made the top 50...namely this new one. This leads to all new crackpot theories of whether the streams were counted correctly and "bloodline" was robbed of a top 10 placing, as for the time being she's only gotten one more top 10 hit via "break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored" up at #2. It's easy to miss among all the Ariana, but there were two more high debuts this week, firstly Khalid because it's been about a month since his last one, and also The Chainsmokers because it's been about a month since their last one. In some sort of divine parody of the way Spotify playlists often allow only one song at a time from certain artists, we have new top 50 entries from Khalid, The Chainsmokers & 5 Seconds Of Summer, and also top 50 dropouts from Khalid, The Chainsmokers & 5 Seconds Of Summer. Obviously the most interesting thing about all this is that Khalid's song is produced by Disclosure, and by entering at #24, it's now their 2nd highest charting single behind "Magnets". 21 Savage gets his 2nd lead artist top 60 hit following "Bank Account", he has thus far only reached the top 50 via "rockstar" and technically "This Is America", so he's trying to ruin his #1 hit streak. George Ezra has also finally scored a 2nd charting hit from his 2nd album because "Hold My Girl" was used on Married At First Sight or something like that. It nearly climbed to #1 on iTunes mid-week but has settled down a little since then, though it could crack top 50 next week despite meager streams.

Go back to earlier in this thread when Bring Me The Horizon debuted at #1 and I provided a list of artists with 4 #1 albums in the 2010s. You can now add Ariana Grande to this list as "thank u, next" has of course done the same. She's not setting new records as I believe Ed Sheeran, Eminem, Post Malone & Drake all had bigger streaming returns. She does save the day by keeping the top spot away from the soundtrack clog fest, and also racist, sexist, transphobic shitlords. That last bit requires a lot of background into very Australian affairs so let me begin. Sticky Fingers are an Australian band. They rose to prominence in 2012 after one of their first singles was uploaded to triple j Unearthed and started getting radio play. From 2013 to 2016 they released 3 albums, getting increasingly popular to the point that the 3rd of those debuted at #1 on the ARIA Chart. They also amassed 9 entries in the triple j Hottest 100 in the space of 5 years. In late 2016, they started receiving allegations from various parties about how the lead singer's drunken behaviour during/after shows was getting out of hand, including threats and abuse to women and POC. Public favour hadn't really swayed at that point, but the band went on hiatus to recuperate. Things turned to worse when the band made a surprise comeback at a live show, and the lead singer posted an apology video to not much convincing effect. The band were invited onto triple j's current affairs program to do an interview, wherein things went downhill fast as it was all a bit halfhearted and the singer flat out said 'boys will be boys'. Since around that point, triple j have never played the band's music since, and from this point on it's turned into a war of left & right. In addition to people seemingly listening to the band purely to 'own the libs', the band themselves have doubled down hard including multiple incidents of setting up sock puppet Twitter accounts to retaliate against people who have spoken out against them, which includes pretending to be these people, or sending transphobic replies to them, you know, just very normal things for a touring band. As someone who used to like some of their music, my opinion is very low nowadays. Sadly they're one of very few Australian artists who can crack the Spotify top 200 chart with most music they release on day 1. Fortunately, favour is dwindling as their 4th album enters at only #4. On a more pleasant note, the very new artist Dua Lipa won Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards and has soared back into the chart with her album. Next week's chart will be a big toss up as to whether or not Ariana Grande's rapidly declining streaming numbers can hold on against "A Star Is Born", or perhaps new entries from Florida Georgia Line, Avril Lavigne, The Cat Empire & Methyl Ethel can make an impact.

Not sure I'll have much time in the rest of the week so just a quick write up. Ariana Grande fends off tough competition from Ariana Grande to get "7 rings" a 5th straight week at #1. The digital & streaming charts could not be less in cahoots so it seems like her lagging sales won't matter too much. At least I'd be saying that if not for the fact that "Shallow" is pulling crazy digital numbers again. If that can maintain well for the rest of the week then there's a chance for an upset. The only real top 10 news is that Khalid has scored his 8th top 10 hit, and oddly enough, Disclosure their first ever. Typical chart stars Cardi B, Bruno Mars, Zedd & Katy Perry in some combination are all back though neither song seems to be making an especially strong impression just yet. Less typical is the arrival of YUNGBLUD who scores his first ever top 100 entry, though he has made it into triple j's Hottest 100 two years in a row now so it's not like he's unknown here. It's also a somewhat uncommon in these times appearance for Travis Barker, who as part of blink-182 had a stack of entries, though they were last seen in the top 30 back in 2011 with "Up All Night". This one will probably last more than one week. It's been a couple months so there's another Juice WRLD song on the chart, I think it's the first time he's had something on the chart ahead of "Lucid Dreams".

Ariana Grande holds the top spot for a 2nd week, which is extremely notable because her prior #1 albums only lasted a single week. I suspect "A Star Is Born" will be back to reign terror except will it? It faces extremely tough competition courtesy of Hilltop Hoods who will be gunning for their 6th #1 album, and might be able to pull a 5 digit figure like Ariana just did. Speaking of bands who broke out successfully in 2003 and are still going strong, The Cat Emire are back with I think their 7th studio album. Two of them, including their previous one reached #1 but this time they make do with #4. Speaking of artists who last released an album in 2016, Florida Georgia Line are also back and for the second time in a row they've hit #7, which is their highest position to date. Avril Lavigne on the other hand is a little down on past performance. She maintains a perfect top 10 record with her 6th album, but it's her lowest charting to date. 3 of her first 4 albums all hit #1 ("The Best Damn Thing" was kept off by Silverchair's last album in its 3rd week at #1). But the chart isn't just for artists coasting on former highs, because Methyl Ethel on the other hand have hit a new peak of #11 with their 3rd album. I haven't heard it yet but the singles are mostly great. But then on the other hand we also have Millencolin who were most popular in the 2000s, and Drake with a mixtape he literally released in the 2000s.

how is Pink predicted to do next week?

That's one thing I forgot to mention. She seems to have set a tremendous new record since she was #2 on sales this week but just missed the top 100 (probably because ARIA counted none of her streams lol). She should hold at #2 on sales, only missing out because of "Shallow"'s rebound, and I wanna guess she'll make around #20, streaming isn't really picking up much yet. "Just Like Fire" and "What About Us" both debuted at #50 on Spotify on their first week but with 10K+ sales, her new song hasn't gotten that high and will be lucky if it gets 5K sales.
Ariana and Post Malone occupy the Top 4  Sunflowers 9th week in the Top 3 too
