Chart Commentary

 

 

Climbing nine spots to #1 in its first full week of availability, Lil Xan's Watch Me Fall becomes the rapper's third #1 single. It's also the first brand new #1 of 2019, as Matteo Markus Bok's Mrs Lonely (1-3 this week) spent its first of two weeks at the top in 2018. Watch Me Fall pushes Lil Xan, real name Diego Leanos, into second place for rappers with the most #1 hits, trailing only Iggy Azalea (who has seven). It follows Moonlight with Charli XCX, which hit #1 in July after I saw him live, and Live or Die with short-lived girlfriend Noah Cyrus in August. That makes Watch Me Fall his first solo #1, and therefore the first male rapper to achieve a #1 on his own (Devlin is the only other male rapper to score a #1 as a lead artist with Rewind, featuring Diane Birch).

Making a comeback to my chart after a gap of three years, popstar Fleur East scores her third top 10 hit. Her debut release, Sax, stormed to #1 in its first full week in 2015 and ended in my EOY top 30 of the year. Promotional track Breakfast also made my top 10, and she scored another top 20 hit with her version of Uptown Funk. Favourite Thing sees her storm to #2, closely behind #1.

Climbing into the top 10 after debuting at #14 last week, newcomer Samuel Daayata scores his first hit. Throw Popcorn is his only single to date, released last April, and is a collaboration with fellow Finnish popstar Isac Elliot. The song came about through a competition, tying in with the release of Isac's song I Wrote a Song For You, where the winner got to write a song with him. Samuel was the winner, and Throw Popcorn is the result. It's Samuel's first top 10, and Isac's ninth. Isac's achieved at least one top 10 hit every year since his debut in 2013 with #3 hit New Way Home, a run that now extends into 2019.

Re-entering into this week's top 10, Alec Benjamin's former #1 hit Let Me Down Slowly begins a third stint in this week's top 10. It's fuelled by a new mix of the song featuring Alessia Cara. Though Alessia isn't credited in my chart, her version has almost entirely fuelled the track's return this week, alongside Alec's performance of it on The Late Late Show. It was the lead single from Alec's #1 debut album/mixtape Narrated for You, and remains his only #1 single to date. It's one of eight total top 10 hits to his name, seven of which feature on Narrated for You, and 11 of 12 tracks from the mixtape have made my top 40 at one point or another.
