My Record Of The Week

http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/ALLSAINTS.JPG

All Saints – Rock Steady

A little bit of history it all began with All Saints 1.9.7.5. the girl band formed in 1993 by Melanie Blatt, Shaznay Lewis and Simone Rainford. They recorded three singles together 'Silver Shadow' (February 1995) was the first single of the All Saints 1.9.7.5, a simple black and white video was recorded for the song and it was aired at least once (probably the only time) on MTV and 'Let's Get Started' (April 1995), was later released in Japan and 'If You Wanna Party' (September 1995) all three singles did not make a dent in the singles chart. When Simone Rainford left the band, the Appleton sisters (Nicole and Natalie) joined the band and it was renamed All Saints. And now back to the present, the girls are back and fully reformed and recharged with a funky R&B track ‘Rock Steady’, sounding as fresh and relevant as ever, full of their original sass and individuality with a hint of reggae flavour, taken from their brand new album ‘Studio 1’. In their career they have clocked up 5 No.1s with their first ‘Never Ever’, notably famous for their infectious ‘Pure Shores’ which also reached the dizzy heights of No.1. The Pop revival is making a strong comeback, Take That will be following in their footsteps in a few week’s time. Go out and buy it, please make it No.1, put the girls back on the map. Rating 5/5

The Hit List

Madonna – Jump

The Queen of Pop is back the most successful female artist in chart history, with her fourth single ‘Jump’ taken from her groundbreaking album ‘Confessions On A Dancefloor’, it's a glistening pop masterstroke of synth beats, sparkling rhythms and a relentless, surging infectious chorus. I still think this is the best track on the album and still one of my faves on the album. If the week had less competition, the single would have fared a lot better, sadly I can see the track missing the top 5. However you judge her she is still the queen of Pop. Rating 4/5

U2 & Green Day – The Saints Are Coming

Bono & Billie Ray Armstrong team up for the first time collaborating together on this one track ‘The Saints Are Coming’. The high velocity rock'n'roll, thunderous bass, spiky guitars and brass section playing tribute to New Orleans' jazz roots will satisfy both U2 and Green Day fans - while all proceeds benefit a worthwhile charity, funded to work with musicians affected by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and the Gulf Region. Originally the track was recorded by The Skids, peaked at No.48, November 1978. The track can be found on U2's forthcoming collection album 'U2: 18'. Rating 4/5

Kasabian – Shoot The Runner

Kasabian follow their ‘Empire’ hit with ‘Shoot The Runner’ taken from their studio album ‘Empire’. Another rock felt track, with lots of energy, from the moment I heard ‘Club Foot’ I was hooked on their music, it was different at the time, they seem to have gone strength to strength and gained a huge fanbase, with a cult following. As for the track, it gathers quickly and turns into a hard rock anthem. Rating 4/5

George Michael feat Mutya – This Is Not Real Love

After some horrid attempts at venting his political spleen, and a few overly saucy funk workouts, George is back doing what he does best nowadays, namely quality pop soul. However, he's still smarting from all the 'controversy' he's caused here, confessing" "I hate what I've become." Former Sugababe, the lovely Mutya joins in for what is a typically smooth if tad overproduced ballad that harks back to George's classic A Different Corner. Rating 3/5

Westlife – The Rose

Lifted from their forthcoming romantic covers collection, The Love Album, things really don't get much soppier than this from the Westlife boys. It's a version of Bette Middler's signature song, a ballad so ridiculously emotive and heartfelt it could surely bring a tear to even Jeremy Clarkson's cynical cheek.

Packed with drama, overly breathy vocal sighs and bombastic orchestral crescendos, this is Westlife doing what they do best - tugging on the ol' heartstrings. Oh, I just like to add for the record, please don’t buy this track, buy All Saints instead. Rating 1/5

Sugababes - Easy

Typical isn't it? This trio have a seamless track record of delivering near perfect pop hits for over six years and then they go and record a slightly below par song for their greatest hits package. With it's mix of Middle Eastern riffs and Detroit funk hooks, by anybody else's standards Easy would be more than adequate. But we've come to expect far better from the world's finest purveyors of superior pop. No surprise then to learn that the track was penned with members of AOR rock act Orson. Still vocally Keisha has her moments, particularly for the chorus. Rating 2/5

Infernal – Self Control

2006 Infernal put pop you can dance to, firmly back on the map, selling over a million singles worldwide! Like a shooting star flashing through the sky of pop, 'From Paris To Berlin' became a huge hit. In a stroke of genius, Infernal have taken one of the 80’s most popular tracks, Laura Branigan’s top 5 smash from 1984, 'Self Control' and doused it in their unique electronic synth pop sound. The result is one of the best pop records you’ll hear for a very long time. Rating 4/5

Gnarls Barkley – Who Cares? / Gone Daddy Gone

The biggest selling single of the year so far is ‘Crazy’ which has amassed over 800,000 in sales. Danger Mouse, aka Brian Burton and Cee-Lo Green, aka Thomas Calloway otherwise known as Gnarls Barkley, they return with the third single which consists of a double A sided single ‘Who Cares? / Gone Daddy Gone’ of their amazing album 'St Elsewhere'. Personally I prefer ‘Who Cares?’ out of the 2 tracks, not a patch on Crazy, but certainly it be another top 20 hit for them. Rating 3/5

Lucie Silvas – Last Year

‘What You’re Made Of ‘ was Lucie’s debut hit way back in 2004, a top 10 success, this little pop princess Lucie Silvas makes a dynamic return with the deftly evocative new single 'Last Year', it's her first release from the forthcoming LP 'The Same Side', and follows the platinum debut 'Breathe In', which sold a staggering 400,000 copies in the UK and took Europe by storm. A nice warm ballad to lift your mood and senses from a stressful day Rating 3.5/5

I need a different volunteer next week to submit their own reviews for the Hit List, so if you think you are a budding journalist, and want to take a stab at it, just PM me or a chart mod. It doesn’t matter how many apply, we can have alternate different writers each week. And give your own review on a single. Just follow the above format, give a well in depth review on your record of the week, and a small review on the Hit List.

Agree very much about All Saints, Mikey though I have to say you're very mean to the Sugababes.

I was unsure of it at first but its really grown on me and though not as strong as previous efforts - still makes for a great pop song.

Good reviews.

The Easy song has grown on me. I can't see it getting any higher than 6 or 7 due to it being such a tough week.

If you could do better I let you do them next week. I don't really find it as good as 'Push The Button' though.

Nice reviews... I pretty much agree with all of them bar U2/Green Day which I despise!

I'll have a go one time I thinkkkkkk. ^_^

Very good reviews Mikey, but this line made my day.
