Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' Tops Hot 100 for a Hip-Hop Record 13th Week; Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello's 'Senorita' Debuts at No. 2

7/1/2019 by Gary Trust

Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road," featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, leads the Billboard Hot 100 for a 13th week, rewriting the record for the longest reign ever for a hip-hop hit.

The track passes three such songs that led for 12 weeks each: "See You Again," by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth, in 2015; "Boom Boom Pow," by The Black Eyed Peas (2009); and "Lose Yourself," by Eminem (2002-03).

"Road" is also just the 12th single in the Hot 100's six-decade history to dominate for at least 13 weeks. It's the first since Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" (featuring Justin Bieber), which spent a record-tying 16 weeks at No. 1 in 2017.

Meanwhile, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello's "Señorita" bounds onto the chart at No. 2, marking their second shared hit. Plus, Mendes ties his best career rank set in May with "If I Can't Have You."

As on the Hot 100, "Old Town Road" (on Columbia Records) leads the Streaming Songs chart for a 13th week, with 88.7 million U.S. streams, down 3%, in the week ending June 27, according to Nielsen Music. "Road" set the record for the top streaming week (143 million) following the April 5 arrival of its remix with Cyrus and claims nine of the 11 biggest streaming frames to date, including the top three.

"Road" rebounds 2-1 for a ninth week atop the Digital Song Sales chart with 59,000 downloads sold, essentially even week-over-week, in the week ending June 27. On Radio Songs, where it reached No. 2, "Road" regresses 3-4, with 82.5 million audience impressions, down 14%, in the week ending June 30.

"Road" concurrently rules the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts for a 13th week each and the Songs of the Summer survey for a fifth frame, following the seasonal survey's annual return after Memorial Day.

As previously reported, Lil Nas X's EP 7 debuts at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 77,000 equivalent album units. The set, which features both the Cyrus and original Lil Nas X-only versions of "Road," also opens at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top Rap Albums charts. Two other songs from the set debut on the Hot 100: "Panini" (No. 16) and "Rodeo" (with Cardi B; No. 22), marking Lil Nas X's second and third entries on the ranking.

Mendes and Cabello's "Señorita" surges in at No. 2 on the Hot 100. The song marks Mendes' fifth top 10 and earns him his first set of top 10s in consecutive chart visits, as he ties his best placement: "If I Can't Have You" debuted at its No. 2 high on the May 18-dated survey (and bullets at No. 14 this week). Cabello collects her fourth top 10 as a soloist (after earning one as a member of Fifth Harmony: "Work From Home," featuring Ty Dolla Sign, in 2016) and her second top two hit, after "Havana," featuring Young Thug, spent a week at No. 1 in January 2018.

Repeat harmonizers: Mendes and Cabello add their second shared top 20 Hot 100 entry, after "I Know What You Did Last Summer" reached No. 20 in January 2016. They follow another pair that notched a second shared hit this year: Cardi B and Bruno Mars rose to No. 3 with "Please Me" in March after also hitting No. 3 with "Finesse" in January 2018. Both tandems are in the historical company of other male and female soloists who have teamed up for multiple top 20 hits, including Beyoncé and JAY-Z; Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta; Rihanna and Drake; Rihanna and Eminem; Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville; Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye; and Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb.

"Señorita" launches at No. 2 on both Streaming Songs (46.7 million U.S. streams) and Digital Song Sales (50,000 sold), while drawing 23 million in radio reach.

Latest potential "Road"-block: if "Señorita" peaks at No. 2 on the Hot 100, it would likely become the seventh song to stop at the runner-up spot below "Old Town Road," which would extend its record for keeping the most No. 2 hits from reaching No. 1. So far, "Road" has held these seven songs to No. 2 peaks below it, including (possibly) two each now by Mendes and Taylor Swift: "Wow." by Post Malone; "ME!," Swift featuring Brendon Urie; "If I Can't Have You," Mendes; "I Don't Care," Ed Sheeran and Bieber; "Bad Guy," Billie Eilish; "You Need to Calm Down," Swift (as it falls 2-13, although with top Airplay Gainer honors, as it increases by 43% to 34.5 million impressions and roars 50-26 on Radio Songs); and "Señorita."

Eilish's "Bad Guy" remains at No. 3 on the Hot 100 and Khalid's "Talk" is likewise stationary, at No. 4 after reaching No. 3. "Talk" tops Radio Songs for a third week (118.9 million, up 4%) and leads the streaming-, airplay- and sales-fueled Hot R&B Songs chart for a 10th frame.

Sheeran and Bieber's "I Don't Care" keeps at No. 5 on the Hot 100 and Jonas Brothers' "Sucker" stays at No. 6, after launching at No. 1 and spending a week at the summit.

Capping the Hot 100's top 10, DaBaby's "Suge" rises 9-7 for a new peak; Drake's "Money in the Grave," featuring Rick Ross, drops to No. 8 after debuting at No. 7 last week; Chris Brown's "No Guidance," featuring Drake, returns to its No. 9 high (from No. 10), set upon its arrival two weeks earlier; and, Post Malone's "Wow." backtracks 8-10.

Shawn and Taylor now both being blocked from #1 by 'Old Town Road' twice  (I think 'Señorita' will have a chance to climb to #1 later though). Yikes at that second week drop for 'You Need To Calm Down' and 'ME!' suddenly falling off a cliff as well.
heres hope Truth Hurts goes top 10 next week
