Posted July 26, 20195 yr So, Hate Me has now entered the Official Chart at #36. Ellie is one of few female artists who can go top 40 with pretty much any single... why? Only 2 Ellie-lead singles have missed the top 40 (1 of them was when she was unknown!). So how has Ellie managed such consistency over the course of the last 10 years? Discuss!
July 26, 20195 yr It's pretty remarkable especially as top 40 means more than it did when Ellie first started in the industry too! She's one of the most consistent hitmakers around even if her peaks don't look quite as impressive recently.
July 26, 20195 yr Author Ellie’s only singles to miss the top 40 Under The Sheets (#53) - Ellie’s first ever single. She was unknown back then. Lights (#49) - Despite this being a huuuge US smash (#2 there!)

July 26, 20195 yr Author Ikr! I have no idea if it actually got a push, maybe Joseph could shed some light?
July 26, 20195 yr Under the sheets was a soft release, a sorta buzz single, not fully fully pushed like Starry Eyed was a months later... it's not that it flopped cos she wasn't famous... she wasn't famous when Starry Eyed was out either... it was just a track released to put her name out there but with no intention of being big... with Lights, not sure... don't think it was fully supported, it was also like the 7th single from the era or something... when it was finally released the album had already sold lots and those things counted in the download era... don't think it was fully promoted... but Im sure they could have re-release it after it when huge in the US, not sure why they didn't, the song really would have been huge with a re-release and new promo...
July 26, 20195 yr Author With a proper push, Lights could have been huuuge, just like you said Bjork!
July 26, 20195 yr Ikr! I have no idea if it actually got a push, maybe Joseph could shed some light? I actually don't know! I wasn't following the charts very closely at that point. It does seem like an odd anomaly in her discography, especially with how well it did in the US, but I think it's made up for that by being a very strong trickle seller since!

Ooh, do we have any up to date sales?
July 26, 20195 yr Ooh, do we have any up to date sales? It was certified silver at the end of 2016, which is mega impressive for a non-top 40 hit and it's no doubt a fair bit higher now, almost 3 years on with streaming so prevalent!

July 27, 20195 yr Lights the song has always been a bit of mistery to me... why it wasn't in the album originally? The album is called Lights so sure they had the song recorded already... and it's such a great song, why not include it on the original release... Starry Eyed is great too and I do like a lot Under the sheets but Lights is even better and certainly much better than the other singles (The writer, Guns and horses) If I remember well the song was written by the team that did all the Spice Girls songs and they had the melody and that piano riff, then the song was given to Ellie and she added the lyrics... This was supposed to be the first single from the Lights re-release, but then Your Song was chosen for that TV ad and it took the place as lead single from the re-release, then the album re-entered the charts the following January and spent a bunch of weeks in the top 10, doing much better than when originally released in March 2010 (it did a 1-16)... at the same time Lights started showing up on the iTunes chart but post-album releases had it hard so never made it... guess people were buying the album instead, which was overall good too... yay the only pity is that after being #2 in the US, they should had re-released in the UK but they never did...

It was a bonus track on the digital album, so I'm not sure why you claim it wasn't part of the album.
July 29, 20195 yr I bought Lights on week 1, physical CD, and it didn't have it EDIT: just checked discos and was not on the original UK CD or UK digital either, not sure what you talking about... plus was supposed to be there lead single of the re-issue, so sure it wasn't part of the original but maybe in the US, no clue as the release was much later
July 29, 20195 yr It was a bonus track on European iTunes, so yes it was part of the original album. The version on Bright Lights was a revamped single mix, which is why they planned for it to be the lead.

July 30, 20195 yr ok so it was in an European iTunes edition, I knew it was not part of the UK edition :)
July 31, 20195 yr yay the only pity is that after being #2 in the US, they should had re-released in the UK but they never did...By the time Lights finally peaked at #2 her next album was literally 2 months from being released, so they would've had to delay the album to make room for a Lights re-release. By that point they were better off promoting new material IMO.
