Every election campaign produces some unfortunate moments for candidates of all parties. That might be a cock-up in a leaflet, a photograph taken at an awkward moment or something else.

 

As a diversion from the heated arguments elsewhere, let's have a thread devoted to these faux pas.

 

We can start with the Tory candidate in Reading who illustrated a leaflet with a picture of an abbey in Scotland rather than Reading Castle.

The Tory candidate in my constituency of Brighton Kemptown was persuaded to drop his campaign slogan of BornHere4Here when lots of people thought it was really, really naff (it is).

 

Then there is the Lib Dem candidate who appeared to claim that she had won the Nobel Peace Prize when it had actually been won by the organisation she was working for at the time. The inclusion of the word "which" in the relevant sentence would have made it rather clearer.

 

“[she]led the campaign to ban landmines in South Africa, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize”.

As I've said before, a lot of people who don't follow politics as closely as we do don't necessarily know the ins and outs of what each party stands for and who's in them.

 

Case in point:

 

The unforgettable John Prescott punch from a egg thrower in 2001. That was pure gold.

The Clangers satirised elections in the mid-70s with the short "Vote For Froglet". Who knew that the Soup Dragon was a proto-Thatcherite?

 

 

I hummed and hahed for a while over whether to put this in the Tories lies thread or in this one. Just to show what a kind soul I am, I have decided to put it here. It concerns our dim-witted friend Dominic Raab. He put out a tweet a couple days ago with a picture showing, he said, himself talking to residents outside a local station at 6:30 that morning. Just one problem - the picture was clearly taken in broad daylight. Unless there is something unique about his part of Surrey, it is still dark at 6:30 in the middle of November.

 

A further look at the picture shows that the people he is talking to are not exactly the sort of people who you would expect to see outside a station at 6:30 as most of them appear to have reached retirement age. Not surprisingly, some people have commented that two of them are Tory councillors.

 

As so often, I'm left wondering why a politician would make a claim that is so obviously not true. He might as well have included people riding to the station on unicorns for extra authenticity.
