I like that the lyrics manage to be fairly positive for a breakup song, and Becky's vocal talent really shows on it too, I love the way she belts out the hook. Sigala's production really stands out here amongst his material; one for it not being the tropical dance style he's most known for, he seems to be branching out a bit more recently and it sounds like this was influenced by dance hits of the early 00s too and not just being 'the Spotify sound'. Just an all-around great song, no surprise many consider it his best although it doesn't quite top 'Sweet Lovin' for me. Eurielle) Date entered: 18/01/2019 Chart sales: 816,600 Chart run: 5-2-1-1-1-3-5-7-9-11-12-14-19-31-42-48-46-60-73-75-73-81-72-87-x [24 weeks] Video: FJhHiFb-yOA Commentary A discovery from early in the year when I was hunting for BJSC entries, I happened to stumble on Headhunterz' Spotify page and went through it and this instantly wowed me, eventually managing to dethrone Calvin Harris for 3 weeks. Hardstyle tracks often forget to add any sort of interest in favour of bass and kick but this has it all. Starting with a raw instrumental texture and vocal (which come back for the chorus), but we are soon given a head banging section, which is great enough but only serves as hype for the proper drop yet to come, one of if not the best I've heard in the genre. Plus the track also has to win the award for key change of the year as we get one of those to hype the final drop. Overall just a very unique track and I probably won't find another quite like it, although both acts have tried to follow it up to varying degrees of success. Well the way my chart works it would've been impossible for it to appear in my 2018 EOY. :P But glad you still like it. Sadly it seems Mark takes his time between eras but I'd be happy to wait a few years if it means another tune on the level of NBLAH or Uptown Funk. I wasn't so keen on the rest of this era.

My absolute favourite song at the moment, with the Avicii vibes in the production and of course Sandro who appeared in a few Avicii songs, which is just what I want to hear right now while we're still waiting for Avicii's posthumous material (which I'm glad they're not rush-releasing as a cash-in anyway). 'Firestone' seemed almost impossible for Kygo to better but he may have done just that, we'll see this time next year how it does though but I expect it'll have a very lengthy chart run, such a fresh and great song and hopefully a future UK hit too (I can't really see it taking off for real sadly, but at least it's made the Spotify top 100 for now).So this just missed out on my Top 250 last year but got a special commiseration. That didn't stop it from doing well this year however as it starts off the top 20! As I write this Kygo's reworking of an Avicii demo is just days away from getting released which I suppose is the natural progression from this, let's hope it's just as great as this if not better. I think I'd still call 'Firestone' my fave of his overall but this certainly did very well for itself with me, if not in the official chart. The track is an instrumental like much of the album but not in his usual style, instead slowing the tempo and going for something a bit more electronica influenced (a YouTube comment compares it to Jean Michel Jarre although I'm not too familiar with his work). Paired with the lovely voice of Roxanne Emery (sister of Gareth) it like 'Lionheart' before is one of the best examples of modern vocal trance, alongside its amazing melody and drop. The piano riff and rain SFX is a nice touch to start and finish the track as well. Hopefully we hear more like this from them soon, as great as the instrumental tracks are this is their clear standout so far. Late Night Alumni, whose members include hit producer Kaskade, released this track originally in 2005 but went unnoticed until Lumïsade's 'Balearic' mix appeared on A State Of Trance as Armin's progressive pick of the week. Both acts were complete unknowns but the track made a great first impression with its lovely atmosphere and vocal plus a great synth hook. It's less in your face than the type of trance that usually does well here but it's really great at what it's doing. The track also eventually got sent to Club Bizarre for the remixes edition where it gave me my first win, pushing it back into the top 20 for a third week. Khalid is not someone who has had many hits in my chart, and in fact his only previous top 40 was the #1 'Rollin' which he did with Calvin Harris. So to be top 15 with his own song is rather unprecedented. Of course, you all know the real reason this did so well, and that is because it was only produced by one of my fave acts in Disclosure, being their only release of the year. They do a great job on this making a song that wouldn't sound too out of place on one of their own projects, although clearly more commercial-tailored than their handful of releases in 2018. Another Disclosure/Khalid collab is being teased at the moment so another big hit could be on their hands soon, let's hope they follow it with an actual album too. Some credit should be given to Khalid here though for his smooth vocal and catchy hook, he definitely sounds better on this sort of track more than many of the dull RnB songs he's made. Sadly, it became my biggest BJSC flop of the year, despite it being one of my personal favourites! Perhaps it was a bit too subtle or just in the wrong semi, and as the chart run says, it took a while for it to properly grow on me as well. The track was his first hit of the year, having been released right at the end of 2018. It had one of the longest runs in the top 3 of the year with 10 weeks there, however it was stuck with a #2 peak as it had strong competition from Calvin Harris' 'Giant' (still to feature in this countdown). It's more of a vocal-focused track than the rest of his output of the year but has an amazing trancey drop as well, and with a great vocal provided by Emma who surprisingly hadn't seen the top 40 since 2012 despite her being somewhat of a prominent trance vocalist.
