June 24, 20205 yr well in the UK, Rover took off first on Apple Music and Spotify was super slow adding and pushing the song
June 24, 20205 yr Actually kind of cool that S1mba made another remix of 'Rover' specifically for the Australian market. Between this and 'Don't Rush' becoming a moderate sized hit in the US, British rap music is making some unprecedented waves worldwide at the moment.
June 25, 20205 yr Author "Rain" is also just outside the top 50 on Spotify with no major playlisting or much precedent for either artist.

Maybe it'll be his last if Australia takes suit from the UK as the relentless power of JAWSH and company is fast rising. It's partly responsible for "Roses" and "Blinding Lights" not being next to each other on the chart for the first time in 14 weeks. Young Thug gets his 3rd top 10 hit thanks to "Go Crazy" seeming to strike lucky in a close field. Tomorrow it looks like the lowest peaking airplay #1 hit in at least the last 12 years will have been the most played song in the country for 6 weeks, this week it's #29 on the chart. It's an astoundingly busy week as there are 2 new entries in the top 50 and future scholars will not be able to work out whether I'm being ironic or not. In a classic display of negligent Australian music promotion, Hilltop Hoods' timely isolation inspired "I'm Good?" has belatedly made the top 50 after most states have relaxed social distancing measures just because it wasn't on playlists until after its big digital sales dropped down. The other is that tacky Eiffel 65 thing that will probably keep climbing. On the insignificant date of April 25th, there was a big television concert raising money for those of which were on the front line of COVID. It was a big ratings hit and now 2 months later a live album for it has been released, and it's blitzed the competition to hit #1 and caused at least one person on Facebook to inadvertently say Tones And I is real music. In the process, they hold off Bob Dylan, who last hit #1 here in 2006 and this week has his best debut since then. Right behind is Ocean Alley who can consolidate a new chart peak for themselves since their 2nd album only got to #11, but it feels like a badly timed release that's put them at #3 where there are many weeks that could have gotten them to the top spot. Lamb Of God are a top 10 mainstay at this point with their 4th album to get there, and they too could perhaps have challenged for higher rungs in a better week, their best is when they debuted at #2 behind Northlane in 2015. Phoebe Bridgers has never charted here before and does pretty well to land at #12, just 6 places behind the last album from The National who I'm still hoping I'll get to see her support on tour once that's finally able to happen. I feel like I was saying the same thing 3 years ago, but Neil Young's new debut at #17 is his highest charting album since 1995. I don't expect any big new debuts next week but maybe Haim can get into the top 10.
July 1, 20205 yr nice for Phoebe Bridgers, a friend of mine that lives in Perth was telling me just now about the cancelled The National/Phoebe Bridgers tour

Put the two together though and Jawsh & company climb to the top spot this week. This does well to maintain a holding pattern of there being at least one vaguely New Zealand based #1 hit every decade that goes back to at least 1979 with Mi-Sex's "Computer Games" (incidentally the 2nd last #1 hit of the 1970s), carries through with Split Enz & Dave Dobbyn in the 1980s, OMC in the 1990s, loosely with Evermore in the 2000s, and loosely in a different sense with Kimbra in the 2010s. The power of the posse cut takes Jack Harlow to the Sportscenter Top 10 as he climbs in his 17th week from #38 (nice) to #9. BLACKPINK score their highest solo cut with "How You Like That" at #12 though I suspect it will have trouble lasting any longer than all their other top 50 hits. What might have longevity is this week's top digital seller "Standing With You" by Guy Sebastian, which in true Guy fashion, is released amidst a conveniently timed promo run. It's doing rubbish on streaming but that might be because playlists haven't kicked in, they're too busy keeping Brando in the #1 spot on Hot Hits Australia. Akin to its typeset, "Ur So F**kInG cOoL" has now bounced 49-44-49-44-49 for its entire chart run. The top of the album chart does not change this week. The top debut actually comes from Khruangbin who I don't believe charted at all with their previous albums, but land this week at #4. Haim have diminishing returns ever since debuting at #2 with their debut but maintain a 3rd top 10 peak. The highest local debut comes from Gordi who narrowly surpasses the #20 peak of her debut album. Next week it's time for our bimonthly Gizz album, but also Pop Smoke will make a posthumous claim for the top spot, having never charted at all in his lifetime.
July 9, 20205 yr Ooh at 'Some Say' in the top 40! I see it's the remix that's popular, and I'm thoroughly amused that 'Blue (Da Ba Dee)', the song it interpolates, coincidentally has a remix in the top 10 of iTunes AU.

Maybe the only vaguely interesting things in the top 20 are right at the bottom, as "Dance Monkey" now logs a 52nd week in the top 20, and right behind it is Nea's "Some Say", an irony free hit coinciding with the fact that Eiffel 65's "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" nearly re-entered the top 50 this week due to the Flume remix. It seems as if most of Pop Smoke's album made the top 100 this week, but just 3 tracks make the top 50, DaBaby is yet again uncredited on a top 50 hit. Of them, "Dior" is actually already certified gold. Unlike in the UK, "Wash Us In The Blood" is the more popular Kanye track, though it is getting a playlist boost. Fresh from racist TikTok fame, Amy Shark gets her 5th top 50 hit, which looks to climb again next week despite still not cracking the top 50 on Spotify. It will be helped by the nonsensical decision ARIA seem to have made so only "Come & Go" will debut from Juice WRLD next week. Pop Smoke scores a posthumous #1 debut on the album chart. The last time this happened was with Gurrumul just over 2 years ago. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are somewhat productive and have their 3rd top 10 peaking live album of 2020 this week at #2. This is their 3rd #2 album without a #1, joining company with Backstreet Boys, Dead Letter Circus & Halsey, though still far behind Radiohead. On the topic of frontloaded Australian bands, earlier this year The Smith Street Band made history with the first #1 album to spend 1 week in the ARIA top 100. Thanks to the belated vinyl release, "Don't Waste Your Anger" has now logged a 2nd week, in the top 20 no less. Also The Story Of Fire Saga soundtrack comes close to outpeaking the actual Eurovision album for 2020. Next week you would think that Juice WRLD would have a good shot at #1, but ARIA seem convinced that it's a battle between DMA'S & Lime Cordiale. I will scarcely trust their numbers regardless.
July 16, 20205 yr Weird that it seems the featured artists on Pop Smoke's songs being snubbed on chart listings isn't a UK-specific problem?? (At least Billboard is getting it right ) Also, dare I look up what 'racist TikTok fame' you are referring to re Amy Shark :x

He's just this week gotten to #1 on Spotify so he's sitting strong for a lengthy run at #1. If there's a contender to take over, I'm not sure it's on the chart right now. After all, the top 5 is unchanged for a 2nd week in a row. I was prepared to loudly protest nonsense when ARIA's midweek data implied that the only Juice WRLD song entered into the chart was going to be "Come & Go", but fortunately sensibility came through in the latter part of the week. Juice WRLD has 8 debuts in the top 50 this week, including 2 in the top 10. Digital sales are usually not very noteworthy in the chart. However, this week covers the semifinals of The Voice and this has brought out relatively unprecedented (in 2020) digital figures, resulting in Guy Sebastian's barely-top-50-on-Spotify song vaulting all the way to #10. In case you were wondering, Guy Sebastian is a judge on The Voice, and the latest season was won by his brother Chris Sebastian who previously competed on the show in the early 2010s. Guy was also recently in the news for chumming up with Scott Morrison in case you didn't think either of the two could get any cooler. The one nice thing about The Voice is that FKA twigs was in the iTunes top 40 last week because someone covered "cellophane". In utter nonsense news, Brando has now been #1 on radio airplay for 8 weeks in a row (and looks likely to make it to 9 weeks), and apart from 2 days over the weekend, has been #1 on Hot Hits Australia on Spotify for the last 2 weeks. Naturally the song is #34 on the charts. It was a competitive week on the album chart this week. Australia's modern stalwarts of reggae-infused pop-rock Ocean Alley and a Rolling Stones album in all their successes have never had a #1 album. Much like Ocean Alley, Lime Cordiale were already an album deep into their career when they started getting big support on triple j, resulting in a late charge for a Hottest 100 entry one year, and then 4 entries the year after. 4 of those 5 Hottest 100 entries are on this album, in addition to several more singles released this year, so it's possible that Lime Cordiale's new album is already basically a Greatest Hits collection which might be why it landed at #1 this week. Because of how charts work in 2020, their biggest Hottest 100 hit "Robbery" is attempting another run on the charts thanks to Hot Hits Australia, getting much more streams than the week the album came out. Coincidentally Juice WRLD's single called "Robbery" that was also released in 2019 and is his biggest Hottest 100 hit might re-enter the ARIA top 100 at the same time for no correlating reason. Surprisingly despite a massive showing on streams, Juice WRLD only debuts at #3, as wedged between the two burglary victims we have DMA'S. Their long delayed 3rd album ends up at #2 which is a pretty decent glow up for them as their first two albums were in the lower end of the top 10, though in both instances there, they had 4 albums debuting above them so maybe they've just chosen a better release week this time. Something I failed to mention last week is that Pop Smoke is I believe the first rapper to posthumously chart at #1 on the album chart, as XXXTENTACION was kept at #2 by Buttigieg fans. A physical release for Make Them Suffer gives them their highest charting album to date at #17, while The Midnight have their first ever top 50 album here with their 3rd album. Next week could see Juice WRLD climb to #1 on inertia, but maybe The Chicks could pull out their first #1 album. There should also be new stuff from BTS & Ellie Goulding in the mix.

It seems reasonable to think that he'll get the bare minimum of 6 weeks though. Bucking the usual trend, "Come & Go" climbs into the top 5 this week, at #4 it's just 1 place behind the #3 peak of "Godzilla" which is Juice WRLD's biggest singles chart peak to date. Though not able to get there in the UK, DJ Khaled & Drake make the top 10 with "POPSTAR", while I wait to see if DaBaby will respond by releasing "Rock Style". "GREECE" also makes the top 50 but looks like its momentum has been halted by the new Taylor Swift album so this might be its only week in the top 50. ARIA have more or less confirmed that Taylor Swift's entire tracklisting will make the top 50, something that only a small handful of albums have ever managed. In literal boomer news, 71 year old Daryl Braithwaite gets his first new top 50 hit in over 25 years as a logical conclusion to the adult-contemporary-in-reaction-to-the-hip-hop radio & TV audiences and also the ceaseless proliferation of his pretty bad but 7 times platinum cover of "The Horses". He's not the oldest artist to get a new top 50 hit in recent times, as Tony Bennett was 88 when "Winter Wonderland" first charted in 2018, and if you extend it to deceased artists, Louis Prima would have been 107 when KIDS SEE GHOSTS featured him on "4th Dimension", though this is also debatably a Christmas song. Juice WRLD does indeed get pulled up to #1 this week, making him the 2nd posthumous rapper this month, and ever, to hit #1 on the album chart. For the 2nd week in a row, an artist with a 2019 hit single called "Robbery" is at #1. Close competition comes from The Chicks, who have never had a #1 album but were closest in 2006 with their last album which spent 2 weeks at #2 behind the already incumbent Californian funk rock band the Red Hot Chili Peppers. ARIA have graciously re-named their back catalogue in their database though oddly "March March" was listed as 'Dixie Chicks' on the digital chart recently. BTS now have 3 top 10 albums that have "Map Of The Soul" in their title, though this doesn't get to #1 like the other two. Oliver Tree surprisingly(?) manages to debut higher than Ellie Goulding. Next week Taylor Swift will debut at #1, and perhaps we'll have new debuts at #2 & #3 from The Kid LAROI & Ronan Keating. LAROI wasn't even 1 year old when Ronan Keating was last seen in the top 50 singles chart.

While The National have gotten very good at not getting a #1 album in Australia, Dessner-produced "cardigan" debuts at #1. Apparently it's the first time in the US that an artist has debuted at #1 on both charts at once, but over here, Billie Eilish already did it a year ago. Speaking of Billie Eilish, she held 6 songs in the top 10 for a week, the only time it's happened, so Taylor settles for 2nd best in that regard. However, her entire album is in the top 50, which if I recall correctly, only Ed Sheeran & Kanye West have done. Ed Sheeran's album also had 16 tracks, but 3 had already debuted before, so Taylor has set a new record for having 16 debuts in a single week. Only Post Malone & Michael Jackson have ever held more positions in the top 50, with 17. Incidentally, Post Malone scored his first top 50 hit in May 2017 with "Congratulations", this week is the first time since then that he is not in the top 50 singles chart. Also in case you wanted to know, "exile" is only the 2nd time that Bon Iver has made the ARIA Singles Chart. "Skinny Love" was not let in the chart when Birdy's cover gave it an associated boost, so the obscure trivia answer is that "Heavenly Father" was the only charting Bon Iver song before this. Amidst this gracious cleaning out of the top 50, there are non-Taylor Swift entries. West Sydney's ONEFOUR would have a pretty consistent hit rate if they released a week earlier, but they're still in with a 4th top 50 hit, while The Kid LAROI has his 2nd this week. Taylor Swift simultaneously scored her 6th #1 single and 6th #1 album, as from "Speak Now" onwards, every album of hers has hit #1, "Fearless" unluckily stuck at #2. But in my endeavours to shout out local artists, one must note that one less surprise release this week would have resulted in a #1 album for Cub Sport, who have made quite a jump in popularity after first breaking out about a decade ago. They'd never had a top 10 album before, but now "Like Nirvana" has the same chart peak as "Nevermind" by Nirvana, ironically this time they're the local upstarts being blocked by the global titan, whereas Nirvana were blocked by Baby Animals. For that matter, there are probably plenty of weeks this year where The Kid LAROI could have entered at #1, but instead he settles for #3. A Ronan Keating album exists, and also Jasmine Rae gets her highest charting album to date at #11. Logic - Medium: Success. The Strokes' physical release nearly gets a new peak, while One Direction get 4 of their albums back in the top 50, with their debut just a little behind the pack just like in the UK. It's not the only anniversary though, as AC/DC's "Back In Black" also turned 40 last week, and re-enters. Next week we have a series of Pauls, Alanis Morissette and Hockey Dad.
