August 5, 20204 yr amazing that Bon Iver's only previous top 100 was Heavenly Father, didn't know it had been a single or charted anywhere
August 5, 20204 yr Author Oh I just remembered "Monster" also belatedly charted due to Adele's Carpool Karaoke, but it's still the only lead artist entry ~
August 6, 20204 yr I had no idea that ONEFOUR actually had hits in Australia! Have heard a couple of their songs just out of curiosity (as they're Australia's answer to the UK drill scene), they're pretty decent. x
August 6, 20204 yr Author As is often the case, their charting singles aren't really their biggest hits. "Spot The Difference" & "The Message" (probably my favourites too) have slowly trickled to around 1.5x Platinum sales without ever even being tracked by ARIA.

While its numbers are going down, it's pretty safe for next week. The biggest thread comes from [Warning: I am about to mention the Cardi B song that may or may not rattle your foundations] "WAP" which is looking like making a big debut maybe at #2. Cardi B's highest lead artist peak to date is "I Like It" getting to #14, so this is a considerable glow up for her. This week's big debut comes from Billie Eilish who now has 10 top 10 hits to her name, only two of which have gotten higher than "my future". It'll likely drop a lot next week but Australia tends to be one of her strongest markets so maybe not *too* much. There are scarcely few new peaks this week but we do have things that could vaguely be considered debuts. Joel of various surnames scores his 2nd top 50 hit with "Head & Heart", also true of MNEK who has only made the top 50 (and I think top 100) with "Never Forget You", already far outpeaking "Sorry" and only looking to jump higher. There's a fake debut this week with Pop Smoke's "Mood Swings", which was oddly omitted in ARIA's inclusion of the vast majority of his album tracks (they even included the album intro, but not "Mood Swings"), though this was probably supposed to be its first top 50 week anyway. Though she did not need to sneak a physical release over in Australia, the glorious power of the rich getting richer lives up here as well, and "folklore" makes 2 weeks at #1. This makes it her 4th album to spend multiple weeks at #1, only "Speak Now" & "Lover" not achieving so. Fontaines D.C. are in at #26 so the regional equivalent is Woolongong's finest Hockey Dad. They continue to make significant vaults up, previously reaching #6 with their 2nd album, now getting to #2 with their 3rd. Pretty valid considering "Itch" is one of the best songs of the year though I am biased as a fan of Radiohead, a band who have an equal chart peak to Hockey Dad. Also having a parade rained on by capitalism is Paul Kelly, who's had a #1 album in 2017, 2018 & 2019, but gets to just #3 with his Paul Grabowsky collaboration. Perhaps things would be different if one of them had a name like Jimmy Recard. A local artist who is moving up is Travis Collins, who's been quite productive in the past 5 years, now getting his first top 10 album. Alanis Morissette has not seen the top 10 since 2002's "Under Rug Swept" (which also hit #1), but shows better forture this week than for her other later albums which usually peak around #20. Perhaps unlucky to release on a busy week is E^ST, who has amassed a number of popular singles & certified bangers over the years and is just now releasing her first album, debuting at #12. Anniversary season continues, this time with Split Enz's extremely successful "True Colours" album from 1980, containing their #1 hit "I Got You". I can only respect the hustle of Dominic Fike making the top 40 with his debut album since he didn't just lazily tack on "3 Nights" & "Phone Numbers" for the streaming points. While just to make sure I mention every debut, Tuka of Thundamentals fame gets to #45, admittedly a step down from his #6 peaking solo album. Next week I think Taylor Swift will have some physical sales boosting her though I don't know whether or not she can fend off heated competition from Luke Bryan, Glass Animals & In Hearts Wake. This looks like the last week as Cardi B makes the expected entrance at #2, and looking to make a mighty vault next week. So for now it ties "Girls Like You" for her highest peak but will graciously surpass it in a week. The other two new entrances in the top 10 are both posthumous, as Juice WRLD gets a 5th top 10 hit with "Smile", and Pop Smoke scores his first with "Mood Swings". Tate McRae scores her first ever chart entry with "you broke me first", sitting just ahead of Sia who has been scoring chart entries since before she was born, the latest of which is this year's Sia soundtrack single "Together", which radio have been absolutely flogging for months though not nearly as much as the essential brando. Taylor Swift may not have needed it, but the physical release of "folklore" certainly secures a 3rd week at #1. This time it's significantly less punching down as she merely blocked Luke Bryan, who scores his 3rd top 10 album, and highest to date at #2. So instead, the local heroes blocked by international juggernauts are at #3 with In Hearts Wake scoring a 4th top 10 album. It's not their highest though, as they reached #2 in 2015 behind that Mumford & Sons album that made everyone get off at the next station. Speaking of which, the relatively maligned 3rd Glass Animals album arrives at #6, their first top 10 album, sinking into the dichotomy that they chart higher on albums but are seen by many here as a singles band, having cracked the top half of the Hottest 100 in 2014, 2016, 2019, and likely 2020 as "Heat Waves" is doing especially well for them. Deep Purple scored a top 20 album just a few years ago but this week they have their highest entry in my lifetime at #13. BRONSON is the collaboration between ODESZA and Golden Features which lands at #22, ahead of Australia's own mid-2000s pop punk band in the 2020s Stand Atlantic who chart for the first time at #23 with their 2nd album. Another local act, sleepmakeswaves take the instrumental post-rock approach to good success, and combine the EPs they've released earlier this year to land at #25. I have no idea what, if anything is going to debut next week. Maybe Biffy Clyro and Emma Swift

In great news, I no longer have to say that Cardi B's highest charter is "Girls Like You", as now "WAP" becomes her first #1 hit. It nearly hit 400,000 plays on Spotify a few days ago which is incredibly high by 2020 standards. Anyway despite the fact that some dolt told me that people are only streaming it out of curiosity, it'll be #1 again next week. For the 2nd time this year, Drake debuts at #3, this time aided by my son. "Head & Heart" becomes Joel's first top 10 hit and MNEK's 2nd. Miley Cyrus's first new chart entry in 2020 gets to #16, just 1 place behind "Slide Away"'s peak currently. She's riding on big digital sales this week but increased streaming will attempt to offset a decline next week. 24kGoldn & Conan Gray both score their 2nd top 50 hits this week, they were 2 weeks off debuting at the same time earlier this year. Anyway, both should climb rapidly, especially "Mood" which is already gunning for a top 10 position which is delightful news because something has to overtake "Someone You Loved" if we're ever to be rid of it. A very belated push gets Ava Max her 3rd top 50 hit too. Taylor Swift holds #1 for a 4th week in a row, making it the longest run of 2020. The last album to spend this long at #1 is "Hollywood's Bleeding" which spent its first 6 weeks at #1. Just about everything climbs up this week as the general weekly quota of debuts is not even remotely met. It does mean that it's a rare case where I didn't forget to mention an upcoming debut though. The top one comes from Emma Swift who I best know for being a news presenter on triple j about 10 years ago, and enters with a collection of Bob Dylan covers, hence the name. The other debut is from Biffy Clyro who maintain their roughly #20ish debuting standard with their latest album. The absurdly slow week means that Jason Derulo's eternally coasting on streaming compilation has fluked a week in the top 50 for the first time ever, yes it has spent over a year in the chart before this. Next week there could be a challenge for #1 via the new Killers album, as well as some action from Tim McGraw. Troye Sivan & Hooligan Hefs both have 6 track EPs and I can never remember what chart they belong to. Edited August 25, 20204 yr by Dircadirca
August 25, 20204 yr It will be interesting to see where BTS land at the weekend. I know the digital #1 can't be selling more than 1,000-2,000 nowadays but it has an incredible lead on itunes and its top 20 on Spotify. If it wasn't for WAP's massive streams I would have bet it could have been a #1 for them.
August 26, 20204 yr Author Yeah I kinda hesitated on trying to predict that since it's very difficult to pin down what its sales are like, but I could guess it'll end up around #3 given how weak the rest of the competition is at the moment.

No chance that it changes next week. Last week it posted the highest weekly Spotify streams in Australia since the week "bad guy" debuted at #1. Which is to say that it wasn't the ideal week for BTS to stake their claim for the #1 spot but nonetheless they've well surpassed their previous performance to land at #2. They're showing strong consistency on the streaming front so even when sales inevitably are down next week, they should still hold up in the top 20. 24kGoldn & Iann Dior both claim their first top 10 as "Mood" rockets up to #4, quite safely poised to take #2 next week with pretty #1 viable numbers on a better week. I'm not sure there have ever been so few white people in the top 10 ever and I don't know whether or not it's a coincidence that ARIA's Facebook audience are especially unimpressed with the top 10 this week. Conan Gray also vaults into the top 20 making "Heather" easily outpeak "Maniac". It's the year 2020 and Delta Goodrem has scored a top 40 peak due to releasing a CD single for "Paralyzed", which briefly glanced the top 100 on digital sales a month ago. Surprising to me is Headie One reaching the top 50 with "Ain't It Different". He was very unlucky not to reach the top 50 with "Only You Freestyle", which would have done so on any other week but it peaked alongside the new Taylor Swift album. I think this is AJ Tracey's first ever ARIA Chart entry. There's also another Jason Derulo song. The Killers score their 3rd #1 album, which conveniently puts them in pretty elite company as one of only a small handful of artists to score #1 albums in 3 different decades. This is actually their first album to not score a top 100 charting single, though surprisingly "Caution" became their biggest airplay hit since "Human". Troye Sivan is not far behind at #3. He was (iirc) the first artist to ever reach #1 with an EP, this time he settles for #3, and he's not the only EP in the top 10, as Hooligan Hefs lands at #9. This is his first chart entry whatsoever because ARIA are incompetent. In 2007 a tribute album to Australian music legend Kev Carmody was released which peaked at #37. This week an expanded Mabel edition was released and it soars to #6. Tim McGraw scores his 3rd top 10 album, all of them just squeaking by as the highest he's gotten is #9. It feels like her hype peaked years ago but Australian songwriter Alex The Astronaut is just now releasing her first full album, which gets her first chart entry this week. Next week is a battle between Metallica & Katy Perry, while Diesel, Disclosure, Josh Pyke & Washington among others could also appear.
September 2, 20204 yr impressive for Headie One to make the top 50, I guess the Stormzy feature must've helped as he's had a couple of Aus hits. nice to see Jubël finally cracking Aus too. surprised Delta can still get top 40 hits.
September 2, 20204 yr Brilliant for Conan, and for Delta too!! Her singles success this era hasn't at all reflected the quality of the music, it's quite sad that she's deemed past it at the ancient age of 35... :drama:
September 3, 20204 yr Ooh Troye's EP actually charted well somewhere! :cheer:Â (I tend to forget that he is Australian)

"Mood" is newly up to #2 with pretty impressive totals though. If you were wondering if people still care about the VMAs, it shows itself to the tune of slight rebounds for The Weeknd & Lady Gaga. Last week we had BTS, this week we still have BTS but also just a little below them is BLACKPINK with their 4th top 20 hit to date, and also Selena Gomez's highest charter this year. Calvin Harris also has a fairly impressive track record of having one top 50 hit every year since 2007, which he maintains with the entry of "Over Now". I accidentally neglected to mention the "Dancing In The Moonlight" cover last week but rest assured I will do so intentionally from this point onward. Metallica pick up their 7th #1 album this week. Their original collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra also hit #1 2 decades ago, and provided one of only 7 songs to ever appear twice in an annual Hottest 100, back when they let that sort of thing happen. This also provides for a reversal of fortunes because exactly 10 years ago, Katy Perry debuted at #1 at the expense of a metal band in Disturbed who entered at #2. This week she takes the runner up spot, though considering "Witness" did the same 3 years back with more hit power on it, debuting this high might be considered a win. The connections continue because Josh Pyke's last chart entry was a collaboration with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and also his last studio album got to #2. Anyway, his 6th studio album becomes his 6th top 10, though lowest to date at #8. One of his first songs to get popular was called "Private Education", and just behind him is a band called Private Function. This is their 2nd album and first to chart. Another Australian act just behind is Diesel, who despite what the name may lead you to believe, is a solo artist. He was particularly successful in the late '80s & early '90s. He's been steadily releasing albums ever since but this is his first to crack the top 10 since 1994. Disclosure's first two albums both entered in the top 5 but they've f**ked up their high and landed at #12 this time around. Seether get their highest charting album ever this week, not quite as much as Washington for whom those same stats apply but I can't think of a song of hers to fit the occasion, maybe that she's landed on the f**king concrete or something. I mean no disrespect though, her recent output has been very solid. Another local artist Miiesha picks up her first chart entry with her album that was released earlier this year but with an extended physical release this week. I have no idea what to expect for next week, maybe San Cisco or the Powderfinger re-issue.

"Mood" is making some inroads but nothing's going to change for this week at least. It looks like Topic jumped up a lot but I think it was just a weird fluke. Conan Gray jumps up to #13 which means that in addition to "The Less I Know The Better" finally becoming a top 20 hit, it's been outpeaked this year by both Trevor and "Heather". Strangely enough, "Ain't It Different" has outpeaked every Stormzy single bar "Take Me Back To London", which is probably the lowest selling of all his top 50 hits apart from this. Brando is still hopelessly underperforming given the extent of exposure he's getting, but in true 2020 fashion, his record for the lowest peaking airplay #1 has been broken before he even left the chart; Sia's "Together" was the most played song on radio last week and I'm not sure how much further it can get here. Saweetie's first chart entry becomes her first top 50 hit but it is produced by a scumbag. I don't know if it has whatever quality let people allow it to slide on "Say So" because performative music fandom wokeness confuses me. Internet Money helps get Nav has first top 50 hit, though "YOSEMITE" wasn't let on the ARIA Chart the week "ASTROWORLD" was released so that probably should have gotten in, not that you could tell Nav was on it at the time.  It turned out to be a battle of former #1s, the winner being Music From The Home Front, which had a triple vinyl release last week and saw a huge rebound. It fends off Powderfinger's 4th and arguably most beloved album "Odyssey Number Five", the only album that can lay claim to housing two Hottest 100 #1 hits but also "The Metre" which is basically a perfect song. The album's rebound is courtesy of its 20 year anniversary with a vinyl re-release and Powderfinger announcing a new album of unreleased tracks. This double pile up ruins the chance of an interesting chart coincidence. Despite their most popular song being released a year before their debut album, they've had a peculiar pattern of #17, #2, #17...#3 peaks with their albums. Since they're from Western Australia, their drummer is probably the only famous person born both geographically & chronologically very close to me. The Australian flavour continues as we have the soundtrack to a biopic on Slim Dusty, who was arguably the most famous country singer in Australia or at least I'm pretty sure he's sold more albums than Keith Urban. Wil Wagner charted earlier this year with a rarities collection, and of course fronted The Smith Street Band who got their first #1 album this year, now he has a top 10 entry with a proper solo release. Big Sean falls somewhat short of his #14 peak in 2017. Rex Orange County had a top 5 album late last year and now charts with thanks to a physical release of an early mixtape sort of thing. In a strangely dissonant battle, it looks like next week's album will go between Vika & Linda, who had a #1 album a few months ago, and Marilyn Manson, who went to #1 in 1998.

From here on it gets interesting as "Mood" is now ahead of it on all platforms, so it looks like it'll be a close battle this week. From here on it gets less interesting because nothing is happening in the top 10. "Lemonade" makes a huge jump this week and is now by far Gunna & Don Toliver's highest charting hit, looking a good chance at top 10 next week too. Machine Gun Kelly scores his 3rd top 50 hit and Marshmello also sneaks in because it was put on Hot Hits Australia at the right time, it's possible if it was updated a few hours later it wouldn't have gotten through. Marilyn Manson scores a 2nd #1 album this week, just 22 years after the previous one. As he is white, the onus is on me to point out that he is probably an abuser. In due process, he prevents Vika & Linda from scoring their 2nd #1 album, after their surprise #1 earlier this year. As the only two new entries in the top 30, it makes for a lot of rebounds for everything else, and lesser drops elsewhere. For instance, Katy Perry is higher in her 3rd week than she was with her previous album, and Jason Derulo gets a new peak. Australian country singer Melody Moko lands in the top 40 with her 2nd album. Next week is pretty certainly a lock for Keith Urban to score another #1 album, alongside entries from Alicia Keys & Yours Truly. I assume Ava Max is in the mix but ARIA suspiciously didn't mention her in their midweek report so I dunno.
September 26, 20204 yr I was wondering when reading this thread the other day why a random country artist was apparently so successful in Australia. Today I learned Keith Urban is Australian. Not an artist I think very much about, he's always just blended in with the dozens of other largely indistinguishable male country artists that make up a quarter of the Hot 100 every week.

Thus at the time of writing, 4 of the last 5 #1's have spent exactly 6 weeks at #1, with "cardigan" as the sole exception. "WAP" is also the only one to do so consecutively. Nonetheless, momentum is still in "Mood"'s favour, so maybe that'll be ready to pounce onto the top for 6 of the next 8 or so weeks. Justin Bieber arrives with the highest new entry of the week at #4, which is the same peak "Yummy" arrived at on week 2. "Holy" does this despite suffering the same fate of Hot Hits Australia only belatedly adding it halfway into the week, however I don't see it climbing like "Yummy" did next week. Certainly not climbing is the other top 10 debut, "One Too Many", which nearly 30 years after he first bubbled under the ARIA Charts, grants Keith Urban his first ever top 10 hit. He's had varying levels of crossover success, most of all with "The Fighter" but his highest chart entry prior to this was the live ARIA Awards version he did with the John Butler Trio for their song "Funky Tonight" in 2007 which got to #11. He also has a noteworthy distinction as I believe his song "Somebody To You" was either the first or second song to ever get a gold certification without reaching the ARIA top 100, and it tends to be his best catalogue seller today. You could attribute this hit to P!nk though this is her first top 10 hit since "What About Us" in 2017, but the main thing is that its digital sales were enormous and a possible hint that we're reaching Billboard levels of unsustainable debuts, though it shouldn't drop too harshly. "Lemonade" also gets Don Toliver and the other artists who showed up with him their first top 10 hits. Earlier this month, ARIA finally addressed common sense, and alongside a website overhaul, they changed their 'Urban Singles' chart to 'Hip Hop/R&B', which I think we can all agree is better than the OCC making a category called 'Black Music' where inspect element still shows the link as 'Urban'. Anyway the worst named artist ever, Ritt Momney debuts on that chart and in the ARIA top 50. Corinne Bailey Rae reached #30 with the original version so this will probably outpeak her. For as long as I can remember, Keith Urban has been a big album seller. He first topped the charts in 2012 with a greatest hits compilation, and then it became an expected event. I'm still a little salty that he blocked Radiohead from scoring a #1 album in 2016 but in fairness he had the 2nd biggest selling album of that year so fair play. His last album "Graffiti U" did not reach #1 however because he reversed his fortunes and released on the same week as the 4th biggest album of the year, Post Malone's "beerbongs & bentleys". With considerably less competition, he gets his 4th #1 album. Pop Smoke overtakes Taylor Swift to inherit the potential role of default #1 album, as he's at his highest post-debut position of #2 now. Despite midweek report shenanigans, Ava Max does indeed debut in the top 10 and I'm curious to see if her streaming inertia will start to apply here after a week 1 decline. Melbourne band Mildlife get their first entry with their 2nd EP entering in the top 10. Alicia Keys continues a consistent run with her 4th straight album to land in the top 20 but not top 10, in the past she's had two #3 albums. Sydney pop punk band Yours Truly finally released their debut album and enter in the top 20 while the vinyl release of "RTJ4" gets Run The Jewels just that little bit higher at #21. Next week is difficult to call as we should have new entries from Deftones, Machine Gun Kelly, Joji & Sufjan Stevens, the former of which went to #1 with their last album. Hopefully the rest of the debuts come from people who aren't gun shooting idiots.
