245 sees the first appearance of Mr Abel Tesfaye with his arrogant but smooth sex-jam 'Often'. I've got no idea what the sample is from but it works so well in creating the atmosphere for this song. It feels very nostalgic seeing the Weeknd with his old hair style in the video too. I'm surprised I've never seen anyone berate him for pronouncing the silent 't' in often before though.

There was a time in 2013 where Macklemore seemed to be ruling the world gaining #1s all around the world and even controversially beating Kendrick Lamar to the Grammy for best rap album. This was the big anthemic, radio hit that you couldn't move without hearing. The soul influences still sound great but this doesn't feel as euphoric as it once did anymore.

2010 927 Gangsta (ft Shorty, Frisco, Jammer & Jme)

This was released just as grime was starting to become a legitimate chart force and has since really been cemented as Skepta's signature song and that official peak is disgraceful. This really hasn't aged a day, it's still as hard now as it was in 2015. The song is the beginning of Drake's obsession with UK scene by containing a sample from a Vine(!) Drake made. It also contains a sample of someone complaining about Kanye's 'All Day' performance at the BRITs which always makes me laugh. Peep in the video a young Mabel, a couple of years before she broke through to become a future star and BRIT winner.

I was never a massive fan of Big Sean but I was surprised by how much I was liking from what I heard from the 'I Decided' album so I checked it out and thought it was a pretty good album and this was the clear highlight. Sean's verse is solid and the chorus is catchy but it's Eminem who completely steals the show with a classic Slim Shady era verse full of controversial lyrics, pop culture references and complex flows and rhyme-schemes. The extended tirade against Ann Coulter that just keeps going and feels like it will never end is a particular highlight. It's a shame I wasn't a big fan of Sean's latest album from last year because in 2017 he was on fire.

2010 903 Hot Girl Summer (Megan Thee Stallion ft Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign)

Unfortunately I think this song is always going to be associated with being a difficult period in Little Mix's career. After WLM's good start the LM5 era turned into a bit of a mess with the band leaving Syco a week before the album's release and this eventually getting pushed as the 2nd single a couple of months later. This became a rare Little Mix single to miss the official top 20 after an incredibly sloppy release schedule with the music video being announced for a certain date and not dropping without warning as to why. It ended up being due to editor issues and did eventually come out but the (Ty Dolla) signs were there for all to see. It's a shame because this is a really fun song and had the potential to do a lot better than this.

This is one of quite a few songs that he's now unlisted the video for so you need the link to find it on YouTube and I can see why. This is slightly immature and amateur compared to his recent releases but that's just progression. In fact, it tactually sounds much better than I was expecting it too, the production is not as basic as I thought it might be and the bridge sounds pretty nice. Crude this might be but it remains fun and is still a bit of a bop. He does have plenty better still to come though.

Rapper and conspiracy theorist B.o.B started of the decade brilliantly, bagging a cross-Atlantic #1 debut and following it up with a slew of other hits in the couple of years that followed. Nothin' On You was also the word's introduction to Bruno Mars who has certainly managed to sustain his success a little bit more. I think I've been generous by keeping this in my top 250 because it's not something I go back to at all but I did really love it at the time. This is pretty cookie-cutter but its still a pleasant listen.

I don't think this is anywhere near being the most well-remembered track in Guetta's discography (although it is apparently his equal highest peaking in the US) but it's one of his best for me. I think the autotune really brings something out in Nicki's voice here but it's a shame she doesn't really get the chance to spit a verse. It sounds like she's going to but then the 3rd verse lasts for a disappointingly short 4 bars. You don't miss the rapping too much when the chorus sounds this massive though.

Fifth Harmony have been one of the most successful acts in my chart's history and Write On Me landed right in the middle with this being their 3rd #1 from their run of seven out of their first eight songs to reach the top of my charts (with Sledgehammer the only to miss out by peaking at #2). I've always enjoyed the slight tropical vibes to this one with a more serious tone than in their smash hits.

Katy Perry has been one of my favourite popstars ever since I Kissed A Girl broke through when I was 10. As you can see by looking at the chart history, she had one last hurrah in my charts in 2017 where she bagged three #1s (including her feature on Feels). The first of which was Chained To The Rhythm, one of the first big political pop songs of the Trump era. Very metaphorical in its message, the song was a step into more mature and purposeful writing than in any of Katy's previous releases (although she went straight back into the tried and tested formula with follow up Bon Appetit lol) and described the wilful ignorance across America. The song features a guest verse from one Skip Marley, grandson of Bob, who's only over appearance in the charts of these shores was as a feature on a Bugzy Malone track last year that reached #89.

I haven't really been a fan of any dance music for the past half-a-decade but in the first half of the 2010's there were plenty of big bangers that were bothering the top of the charts and this was one of the best of the bunch. Robin Schulz's remix of Lilly Wood & The Prick's (who famously met in a Parisian café :jameela: ) Prayer In C turned it into a subtle dance classic that still holds up massively. It's not one I go back to loads but it always hits me the same when I do.

Let's go back to early 2010 when a young white rapper with a tendency for punchline-heavy lyric with the odd pop culture reference thrown in for good measure emerged into the mainstream of the British music scene. Cue hundreds of lazy and inaccurate Eminem comparisons but while that comparison might have been unfair, Green did kickstart his singles career with two fun bangers that both sampled classic hooks. I feel this has held up pretty well. Despite sounding very much of its era, this remains a bit of an earworm with a fun vibe. Minus points for audio-visual syncretism though. How can you hire a blonde model to be on screen while he raps the lyrics "brunette with such class"?

This was released just as I was starting to get really into Blackpink and if it was released just a few months later it would have been an easy #1 but it still managed to do really well as is. I think someone on the production team for this song definitely saw the 'How To Make A Hit Pop Song" video by Brett Domino because the breakdown sounds the exact same as it does in the song her makes there. The song is having another bit of a moment for me this year with the excitement of Rosé finally becoming the 2nd member of Blackpink to get a solo single and with Jennie's performance of this with a new verse at Blackpink's 'The Show' livestream concert.

This song is childish and tries a bit hard to be edgy (Wax's first line is a disturbing Rebecca Black joke) but there's something about this bluegrass/country/rap blend that makes is a bit of a bop. I've already mentioned about how much more mature Watsky has came as a rapper but Mody's production has came a long way since this too. He produced some of Watsky's best work since including some of the highlights from my favourite of his albums (All You Can Do) and every track on its follow-up 'x Infinity'.

A song combining the talents of The Weeknd & Kendrick Lamar was such an exciting prospect when this was announced. Two of my favourite artists joining forces is sure to lead to something special. I think ultimately this did just sail off the names of the artists and the hype of the film in my chart as there's much stronger from the soundtrack still to come in this countdown. This is still a good song but the potential was certainly there for something much bigger.

I remember feeling at the time that this was one of those songs that shouldn't have really hit #1 in my charts but I don't think that way not at all. The slightly cringy parts of a Taylor single where she starts talking are always my favourite part and there's no exception here. I think I've ranked this way too low. Even only a year later, if I were to recompile this I would rank it much higher. This was the perfect way for Taylor to transition into pure pop as it's everything the very best pop songs are: fun!

KOD was been one of those albums for me that I still spin regularly and feel like there is genuinely no skips on the album. ATM had a criminally short run in my chart but has held up brilliantly to get a much more respectable finish here. The song is stylistically a parody of SoundCloud rap with choppy flows and a bright and trippy video. But this is Cole and he manages to deliver a great rhyme scheme within the confinements. A lot of the album focuses on different types of addiction and ATM focuses on the materialistic value of money with the title actually being an acronym for 'addicted to money'.
