A couple months after our last entry, Eminem surprised release an album that caused quite a stir after the mixed reaction to his previous Revival album. The album kicks off with The Ringer, a 6 minute aggressive assault on the ears without anything that even resembles a hook that fired shots at everyone from Iggy Azalea to Donald Trump. Not many rappers can make a 6 minute track feel like a breeze in the same way Eminem does. He always finds some crazy pockets to sit in with constantly changing flows. Even when his lyrics can become slightly corny (the whole colour-blind rant being the main example), the intricate schemes are always designed and written to perfection that means it never gets boring. Like ATM before, this also takes aim at the current generation of rappers with direct mentions of MGK, Lil Pump and Lil Xan and also some clever, subtle disses to NF ("an effing (NF) Recovery clone of me"".

Two songs in a row without the official audio being free on YouTube. :( I'm sure everyone can remember the summer of 2016 and this song's 15 week reign at #1. It was no slouch in my chart either with 3 weeks at the top. For such a monster hit, it has seemed to become lost in Drake's sheer multitude of chart toppers but it has certainly remained a bop with the sample of Kyla's Do You Mind being the clear highlight.

In the early years of the decade, Nicki Minaj was going through a pure pop phase and the most successful release of that time was surely Starships. A legitimate million seller in the UK as well as breaking records at the time for the longest consecutive run in the Billboard top 10 from debut, the song was everywhere in 2012 but I'm glad Nicki has since transitioned back towards rap because I don't think this has held up that well at all.

In general, I find Matty Healy has an aura of smugness that I find slightly off-putting but there's something special about this song that allows it to cut through that. This is one of the poppier songs they've released with an absolutely killer hook that burrows its way into your mind. The second verse is about as pretentious as lyrics can get in a radio hit but you ignore that because the production and vibe to the song is so fun. They've released some other decent songs but this is the one legitimate banger in their discography.

I know that I said in the commentary for the previous Pro Green song that comparisons to Eminem were lazy but it's impossible to listen to this song and not be reminded of him. Parent issues and digs at the media are commonplace throughout Eminem's whole discography but here Green treats the topic with much more sensitivity (even if he does call his Mum a 'sket'. I never liked Sandé's 'Part III' but her hook works well here to further the emotion and personal nature of Green's story.

This is by far the best song Gorillaz have put out since their comeback after 7 years without an album. Vince Staples is on fire with a playful flow and some hard-hitting shots at racism in America. The production is all over the place in the best possible way and Albarn's verse mixes in surprisingly well with Staples harsher delivery.

He's carried on releasing music but in 2015 Usher decided to bless us with one last bop with this Juicy J assisted smash. I can't listen to it without thinking of that Kermit the Frog Vine though nowadays. In 7 years of my chart, this is the still the only occasion of an artist whose name begins with a U making an appearance.

You know a song must be special if it's making a decade-end top 250 while being an album track released in the final year of said decade and ghostin certainly is. This is the song of Ariana's that hits the hardest. The song deals with her love for Mac Miller after his death and how his memory has effecting her relationship with Pete Davidson. Understandably, Ariana found this too personal a song to perform on tour but selfishly I would loved to have heard it because it would have been such a special moment. Ari wanted to cut this from the album alongside another song in tribute to Mac (reMeMber) but was eventually convinced to let this one remain.

Sheila was one of my faves growing up and I've always had an affinity for Jamie T due to the similarity with my Dad's name but I'd never dug too far into this music. I've always thought this had a pretty neat video with the band becoming progressively more zombified as the video progresses during their performance at a quiet pub. I remember this stumping a few when I used it in one of my NMTBJ quizzes.

DAMN is one of those albums that I've absolutely span to obliviation but still manages to remain special. LOVE was one of my favourites from the start and I was delighted to see it eventually become a single. Zacari sounds so smooth on the hook and Kendrick glides through the track in the way he always does. I can't believe this is still the last new music we've had from Kendrick (aside from his work on the Black Panther soundtrack). Where are you, the world needs you???!!!

Proving that you certainly don't have to be highbrow (or indeed any good) to earn a place here is LMFAO with their magnum opus, the patently absurd Sexy and I Know It. LMFAO certainly had their signature sound of lazy beats and even lazier raps down to a T because this is still a fun listen. It released at the the perfect time for a 13 year old me to enjoy. The most worrying thing is that this was only 10 years ago, it feels more like 15.

2010 701 Bad Liar

2010 907 Lose You To Love Me

I always find this slower, darker, more minimalist vibe to be where Selena excels which is why I found Rare such a triumph. This was the first time she dipped her toe into this sound and was such a solid way to start. Selena doesn't have the strongest voice of the pop girls, but she uses all the emotion in her voice to great effect here to build a chilling mood.

Rihanna has never been an artist who's work I've consistently loved but she really knocked it out the park with what (unbelievably) remains the lead single to her most recent album. How on earth did PARTYNEXTDOOR manage to blag a collab last year when she seems so adverse to releasing music I'll never know. This dancehall smash famously received two-videos-in-one but I couldn't tell you anything that happened in the first because the 2nd one with Rihanna, Drake and see-through top all in a room together seems to be the one that became iconic.

Some of the lyrics in this one are on the corny side (and dated with a Kony reference) but it get's away with it with the breezy nature and I really love the reference to the 4/4 time signature of the song in the chorus. This is the single man's anthem where Watsky states that he doesn't believe in the concept of 'the one'. The lyric video to this seems to have been made private now but at least there's the auto-generated video now on YouTube :)

YG's EOD History:

2010 213 Don't Tell 'Em (Jeremih ft YG)

Based on a sample of Snap's 'Rhythm Is a Dancer', Jeremih bagged himself a surprise massive hit with Don't Tell 'Em. Featuring a memorable verse from YG, he wasn't the first choice to provide a guest verse, Jeremih admitted that the song was originally offered to 2 Chainz but he turned him down after he asked for too high a fee. There was apparently a 'UK Remix' of this that I have absolutely no memory of featuring Krept & Konan; a combination of artists we will be seeing again later in the countdown.

2010 841 Bartier Cardi (ft 21 Savage)

2010 975 Girls (Rita Ora ft Cardi B, Bebe Rexha & Charli XCX)

Aside from a few features, I've never been able to get into any Bruno Mars songs. My Mum loves him which made it even worse so I was shocked when I first heard Finesse and I was very pleasantly surprised. Cardi works so well on this track that it's difficult for me to imagine her not being on it for the first year of the songs existence in the world (I've never heard the album version). The video is a really fun call-back to the 90's and in particular the Wayans, JLO, Jim Carrey and Jamie Foxx star-making show 'In Living Color'. A career highlight for both involved in my opinion.

PJ & Duncan's EOD History:

2010 211 Let's Get Ready To Rhumble

Let's not go all the way back to 1994 but instead to 2013 where (aside from an aborted first attempt a month earlier) the first ever of my charts was posted on Buzzjack and topping the chart, as it would in the official chart the following Sunday, was a cheesy pop-rap hit from the UK's most popular TV duo. On the Saturday, Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway had ended with a performance by the latest artists taking part in reality show 'The Big Reunion' leading to the Georgie twosome to resurrect their long-forgotten recording career as their characters from Byker Grove. It was a great moment and certainly the most iconic part of the show's history and the goodwill enabled me to enjoy this song which is in all honesty, completely rubbish. One of very few tracks I've allowed to make this countdown that don't originate in the 2010's.

Example's EOD History:

2010 210 Monster (Professor Green ft Example)

Despite being released in 2010, this managed a #2 peak in my chart in 2014 after I rediscovered it and remembered how fun it was. Some of the references are very much of its time (Pixie Lott and I'm sure the Sugababes line felt dated even back then) but the Peter Andre line remains a killer that doesn't ever stop from giving me a little chuckle when I hear it.
