Biography

Octavian

Bridging the gap between drill, R&B, house, and British rap, French-born rapper Octavian broke onto the crowded London scene with 2017's Party Here. Born in Lille, France, Octavian Godji moved to Camberwell, South London at a young age with his mother and after attending the now famous BRIT school in Croydon -- whose previous alumni included Amy Winehouse, Adele, and Jessie J -- Octavian left to pursue his own musical style. Inspired by the likes of Chief Keef and Drake, he set about merging the sounds of hip-hop, house, and the rising drill scene in London. In 2017 he released the fragmented and woozy-sounding Party Here, becoming a home-grown hit within the scene; it wasn't long before Drake was quoting the rapper on his own social media accounts. In the following year, Octavian released several tracks -- "Little," "100 Degrees," "Hands" -- before signing a deal with respected label Black Butter. Octavian's debut album, Spaceman, appeared in the September, and saw him perfecting his own take on the British hip-hop sound. - iTunes

Skepta

A veteran of the U.K. grime scene, MC, producer, and record-label owner Skepta was influential in the genre's shift from the underground to the pop charts, as well as its creative and commercial resurgence during the mid-2010s. Born Joseph Junior Adenuga to Nigerian parents, Skepta moved to Tottenham with his family at the age of three. Inspired by both U.S. and U.K. hip-hop, he started his music career appearing on the pirate radio circuit and performing at various MC battles. In 2005, he formed the grime label Boy Better Know with brother J.M.E. and Wiley, and a year later joined East London collective Roll Deep, although he left the following year to concentrate on Boy Better Know and his solo career. He released his first two albums, Greatest Hits and Microphone Champion, through his label before signing with All Around the World Records in 2010. In the same year, he reached the Top 40 with "Bad Boy" (number 26) and "Rescue Me" (number 14), supported Chipmunk on his U.K. tour, and was personally selected by P. Diddy to record a grime remix of "Hello Good Morning" after being recommended by his Twitter followers. His third album, Doin' It Again, featuring the Top 40-charting single "Cross My Heart," was released at the beginning of 2011, subsequently peaking at number 19 on the U.K. album chart.

In 2012, Skepta released two singles ("Hold On" and the C+C Music Factory-sampling "Make Peace Not War") that took his sound in a more commercially minded direction. Both songs hit the Top 30 of the U.K. singles chart, and were intended to be the leadoff singles to an album titled The Honeymoon, but the disappointing reaction from fans led to the album being scrapped, and a mixtape titled Blacklisted was released at the end of the year in its place. After keeping a low profile in 2013, Skepta came back in a big way the following year. He contributed a verse to a remix of "German Whip" by Meridian Dan, which became a Top 20 hit in May 2014. The following month, Skepta's single "That's Not Me" (which featured a guest verse by J.M.E.) was released, hitting number 21 on the charts. Both tracks were praised as helping to revitalize grime, and the latter was eventually named track of the year by FACT Magazine. Skepta's early 2015 single "Shutdown" was another U.K. Top 40 hit, and the MC received attention from Drake and Kanye West, joining the latter on-stage during the BRIT Awards. Skepta made his acting debut with a role in the 2015 crime drama Anti-Social, and worked on his long-delayed album Konnichiwa. The album was finally released by Boy Better Know in May of 2016, featuring guest appearances from Wiley, Pharrell Williams, and Novelist, in addition to his previous two hit singles. It debuted at number two on the British charts and earned vast critical acclaim, including the prestigious Mercury Prize. It was followed in 2017 with the Vicious EP, a short burst of six songs that featured appearances by Lil B, Section Boyz, and A$AP Rocky and A$AP Nast. The next year, Skepta teamed up with Goldie for the collaborative single "Upstart" b/w "Poisonous Darts." He followed with "Sheevita Juice" and "Pure Water." - iTunes

isn't Octavian the lead in this one? R1 presented it like it was Skepta's song...
For minute, I thought it was "Puppy Chulo" when Scott mentioned the song.

Biography

There’s a good anecdote that Future recounted in an interview—about getting into an argument with a guy who was worried about one of the Atlanta rapper’s engineers. The engineer hadn’t left the studio in a week. Had he even eaten? Don’t worry, Future said—he himself hadn’t left in a week, either, and someone was bringing in Wendy’s from up the block. Barely a season goes by without new music from the rapper born Nayvadius Wilburn (in 1983)—whether it’s a mixtape, solo album or collaborative project (with Drake, with Gucci Mane, with the producer Zaytoven). But prolific isn’t the half of it. Druggy, raw, slick and surreal, Future’s sound—crystallised on highlights like 2014’s Honest, 2015’s DS2 and 2017’s HNDRXX—has helped redefine 2010s street rap as something strange and almost avant-garde: trap as modern psychedelia. Not that it isn’t melodic too. Like fellow Atlantan and collaborator Young Thug, Future has a way of bending his voice (often using Auto-Tune) into soulful, often sad shapes, half-rapped and half-sung—the sound of a crooner stuck in space. “The biggest thing is just being yourself all the time,” he told Beats 1 host Zane Lowe in early 2017. “When you try and be yourself all the time, everyone’s not gonna like it. But you gotta wake up with that person. At the end of the day, you can be able to look at the person and be like, You know what, I know I’m being myself; I’m not being anyone else. And that’s the greatest thing about this: It’s me being myself.” - iTunes

Biography

Tory Lanez was one of the more versatile commercial artists to surface during the early 2010s. A songwriter and producer who flits between and fuses R&B and rap -- his vocals alternate between swift and rugged boasts and smooth and sensitive come-ons -- he made steady strides toward the mainstream with numerous mixtapes, guest appearances, and self-directed videos. He spent parts of his early life in Toronto, his birthplace, as well as in Montreal, Miami, Atlanta, and New York. Although he was known underground well before his 20th birthday, and was supported early on by Sean Kingston, he made some of his biggest moves in 2014. During that year, he was featured on "Me & My Bitch" -- a track off YG's Top Five album My Krazy Life -- and among his own tracks that circulated in 2014 was "The Mission," his first cut to hit Billboard's Twitter Emerging Artists chart. In July 2015, after he had signed an Interscope-affiliated deal with Benny Blanco's Mad Love label, he released "Say It," an R&B slow jam that sampled Brownstone's mid-'90s hit "If You Love Me" and peaked the following February at number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100. A handful of additional tracks, including the dancehall-flavored "Luv" -- his second Hot 100 placement -- led to his debut full-length, I Told You. Issued in August 2016, the album peaked at number five on the Billboard 200. "Luv" was later nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best R&B Song. Several singles, including the Future collaboration "Real Thing," followed during 2017 and early 2018 and led to his second album, MEMORIES DONT DIE. - iTunes

I am not familiar with Skepta music at all and I know his name has been around for forever but I am finding surprising that he never hit top 10 with his own song!!!

I hope Nathan Dawe hasn’t stalled at #41. Can’t see how he’d miss the top 40 when he’s top 60 on Spotify and top 10 on iTunes
yes they skipped Chris Brown :D next! :D
Thank god they didn't play the Chris Brown track
Radio 1 don't normally skip the new entries so why did skip Tory Lanez's new one.

It won't be top 40, it was #58 on Wednesday's update, too big a deficit to make up in that time.

Biography

Irish singer/songwriter Niall Horan was one-fifth of One Direction, one of the most commercially successful boy bands of all time. As one of the group's more prolific songwriters, he could also play guitar, which helped him kick off a solo career after the group went on hiatus in 2016. Born September 13, 1993 in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland, Horan became interested in music at a young age. After his elder brother failed to play the guitar he had received as a Christmas present, Niall picked it up and taught himself to play by watching instructional YouTube videos. Discovering he also had a talent for singing, he began writing songs and performing while still in his early teens, even bagging a support slot with former X Factor contestant Lloyd Daniels at the famous Academy Club in Dublin.

At the age of 16, he auditioned for The X Factor, and the rest is history. One Direction, formed on the show in 2010, went on to become one of the most popular groups of the decade, with sales even surpassing the Beatles. Horan was one of the group's principal songwriters and a fan favorite with his baby-faced good looks and sweet tenor. After five albums in five years and the loss of one of their most popular members (Zayn Malik), One Direction took a well-deserved hiatus beginning in January 2016. Later that year, Horan announced he had signed a solo deal with Capitol. His debut solo single, the romantic acoustic ballad "This Town," was released in September, drawing comparisons with Ed Sheeran and reaching number nine on the U.K. singles chart. Two further singles appeared -- "Slow Hands" and "Too Much to Ask" -- before his debut solo record, Flicker, was released in October 2017. Inspired by the sounds of Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles, the album also featured an appearance by Maren Morris on "Seeing Blind." During the tour for Flicker, Horan and his band made a stop in Dublin to record a live version of Flicker with the 45-piece RTÉ Concert Orchestra, which was released in early 2019 as Flicker Featuring the RTÉ Concert Orchestra (Live). - iTunes
