November 20, 200618 yr What will this mean for us? Does it make any difference whatsoever to what we can see on ITV1? :( Atm Sky have bought 17.9% :puke2: and NTL are interested and could have bought ITV 100% but can't now. I don't get what it all means though so can someone explain please? :( actually damage limitation on the part of news int/bskyb, as they think virgin media (which is ntl rebranded with shares from branson) might take over itv fully. branson has wanted parts of itv network before according to papaers: BSkyB and ITV fall as jostling intensifies By Miranda McLachlan Shares in both BSkyB and ITV plunged at the opening of trading after Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson vowed to seek regulator intervention over the satellite broadcaster taking a 17.9 per cent stake in ITV. BSkyB shares fell 3.3 per cent to 526p while while ITV stock was down 5 per cent to 110p at the start of trading following BSkyB's decision to take a blocking stake in ITV on Friday. However, both stocks later regained some ground with ITV down just 1.3 per cent and BSkyB just under 2 per cent lower in early afternoon trading. A key shareholder in in NTL, the Virgin chairman has aggressively backed the cable group's £6 billion ongoing merger talks with ITV. NTL's aspirations of taking full control of ITV have been stymied by BSkyB taking such a large stake in the ITV. Sir Richard is expected to complain to both the Office of Fair Trading and Ofcom this week after accusing BSkyB, which is 39.1 per cent owned by News Corporation, the parent company of Times Online, of "a blatant attempt to distort competition". NTL would not comment on the matter this morning. Sir Richard holds an 11 per cent stake in the company after selling his Virgin Mobile business to NTL earlier this year for just under £1 billion. A spokeswoman for the Office of Fair Trading said it had not yet received a complaint from Sir Richard but would look at BSkyB's stake in ITV if it believed the move would lead to "a dominance within a particular field". Ofcom did not return calls from Times Online. A spokesman for BSkyB rejected Sir Richard's criticisms saying the group had been "fully compliant with both the spirit and the letter of the law". ITV confirmed in a statement today that BSkyB had pledged not to acquire more than a 19.9 per cent stake. Under the Communications Act 2003, BSkyB cannot hold more than 20 per cent in ITV. "British Sky Broadcasting has further confirmed their wish to be a supportive shareholder, working constructively with ITV, and exploring options to create value for all shareholders," ITV said in the statement. "The Board of ITV looks forward to such discussions with British Sky Broadcasting in due course." Simon Wallis, an analyst with broker Collins Stewart predicted in a note that, "There is certainly a meaningful probability that the regulator will rule against Sky standing in the way of the [NTL] lifeline being offered to ITV." "They could force a disposal and a time limit for Sky to comply," Mr Wallis added.. sunday times on the other hand my dad thinks and he has thunk this for a few years that everything will end up pay for view once they turn off the analogue signal. and with bskyb building up the stakes and another pay tv opperator too this is looking that this might happen. bbc and quiz channels will still be on freeview/freesat* *if they ever get round t doing it
November 20, 200618 yr BSkyB have just bought shares in ITV, to prevent an NTL takeover (their main digital competitor)
November 21, 200618 yr It's quite clear to me that murdoch is turning his sights on dominating yet MORE of the media in this country.. He has to be stopped, simple as.... Can you imagine what ITN News (which Murdoch would control if he got his grubby paws on ITV) under Murdoch control would be like...? Take a look at the disgusting right wing propaganda that he propogates over on Fox News and that'll give you some idea of what news progs such as the excellent "Channel 4 News" might become.... <_<
November 21, 200618 yr When did Richard Branson buy NTL? I've always considered NTL one of the worse run companies in existance so somewhat surprised it's owned by Richard.
November 22, 200618 yr Does anyone watch ITV anymore anyway? Its been $h!t for ages Yes, I do agree. But had the Celtic vs Man Utd match last night didn't it?
November 22, 200618 yr Author ITV1 is like the only channel I watch. Everyone always moans about how "$h!t" it is and how amazing Channel 4 is, yet ITV1 gets over double the amount of viewers.
November 22, 200618 yr ITV is trash tv though Cheap, cheerful and tacky, the TV equivalent of Blackpool or The Sun You just get cheaply produced trash tv really, BBC is FAR superior, look at BBC period dramas and costume dramas and political programmes and philosophical programs and scientific programs and spiritual and Panorama etc, FAR superior to ITV
November 22, 200618 yr ITV1 is like the only channel I watch. Everyone always moans about how "$h!t" it is and how amazing Channel 4 is, yet ITV1 gets over double the amount of viewers. Well, Barbara Cartland and Virginia Andrews have sold more books than James Joyce, George Orwell or Dostoevsky, but I reckon I know who the better writers are.....
November 22, 200618 yr When did Richard Branson buy NTL? he didnt buy ntl, ntl merged with telewest and then did a takeover of virgins mobile division which included a percentage of the new comapny's shares given to branson. this company will rebrand itself into the stronger virgin media brand from next year. a lot of the times richard sets something up, sells it on but keeps % as its using his brand names etc etc. v complicated his group
