May 21, 20205 yr Author No need to worry cos All Saints will be around #6. All Saints - I Know Where It's At | 8.178 Highest Scores: 10: (Scene, Davidson, Jade, Beef Curtains), 9.5/9: (:'), blacksquare, Tawdry Hepburn, Jesty Cough, JosephStyles, Hauspital), Lowest Scores: 5.5: (Billy), 6.5: (Nick F1) At #6 is the one that started it all with "I Know Where It's At" which is the debut single by All Saints, released in August 1997 & featured on their debut album "All Saints" & became the groups first top 10 hit by peaking at #4 on the UK charts & kickstarting their careers. Elsewhere it was also a success by reaching top 10 peaks in Canada, New Zealand & Scotland, as well as top 20 peaks in Australia, Ireland & France. It even managed to reach the top 40 in the USA in 1998 following 'NE', becoming their 2nd & only song to chart there. The song was written by Shaznay & Karl Gordon, with production handled by the latter & samples elements from Steely Dan's "The Fez". After a slight line-up change & name change, this was a good effort for the girls to burst onto the mainstream with, as they were instantly seen as a cooler more hip alternative to the Spice Girls, which is quite a feat considering that after they were looking round for record labels, most wanted to model them after their counterparts. This track is a very well written bouncy little gem, that kept in line with the sounds that were popular at the time, with that bubbling piano line, heavy urban beats & distinctive razor sharp hooks & cool harmonies that does just about enough to set stand out & set the tone for what's to come. They were just getting warmed up here with a really good appetizer, the main course will come next & don't any of us were prepared for the level of success that was waiting for them around the next corner, neither were they... May 22, 20205 yr Author I got my bags packed baby and I'm ready to go #5. All Saints - Rock Steady | 8.196 Highest Scores: 11: (Jonjo), 10: (SamJudd, Nick F1, Spiceboy, Billy, Tawdry Hepburn, WinterFreeze, JosephStyles, Jay), Lowest Scores: 4: (George.keh), 5: (gavindeejay) At the #5 spot by a margin of just 0.5 is...All Saints with their comeback effort "Rock Steady", released in November 2006 as the lead single from their 3rd studio album "Studio 1" & marked their first release since their split in 2001 & received mainly positive reviews from critics & became a success by reaching #3 on the UK singles chart, making this their 9th & to date final top 10 hit. Elsewhere it saw some success internationally with top 10 peaks in Hungary, Scotland, Czech Repbublic, Finland & Spain, while also managing top 20 peaks in Slovakia, Ireland, Italy & Austria, as well as top 40 peaks in 4 other countries. The group collaborated with Greg Kurstin on a number of songs, 6 of which ended up on the album, including this effort & features prominent 2 Tone, dance-pop, reggae fusion & ska influences & lyrically influenced by the groups personalities. There was some controversy regarding its sound after Girls Aloud member Cheryl accused the All Saints single of sounding like one of Girls Aloud's songs namely "Jump", but would later turn out to be claimed false & taking out of proportion. Sadly their comeback would be cut short thanks to the album flopping hard at #40, despite the lead single being a success. Why this happened I reckon that it was too much too soon, where they'd only reformed in January '06, then had an album rushed out by the end of the year & it simply wasn't up to scratch with the lack of William Orbit's presence being strongly felt as it gave this album an off-brand feeling with a lot going on with the group's vocals just slapped on top, while the song-writing is decent, however the musical delivery is just a waste of the group's talents, and they should have been allowed to do themselves justice. Thankfully that would come later. If they spent a little more time on this & not rushed its release (maybe leave it till the following year), then maybe things may have turned out differently. "Rock Steady" was definitely the correct choice to lead this era (not hard considering nothing else on the album quite matches its quality), with its wonderful soundscape of beats, synths, and that familiar group vocal harmonies with a wonderful tempo & catchy melody's that instantly gives it that feel like it belongs with the rest of their discography & the mixture of different styles really gives this that fresh & cool vibe, definitely one of their most dynamic numbers of their careers. Brilliant track shame the rest of the album couldn't live up to this, but still on the whole a cracking tune. EJoAMsydt-E
May 22, 20205 yr Anthem. I'm still annoyed about how two pieces of absolute shit robbed this of being #1.
May 22, 20205 yr As for the album, it's SO much better as an album than Saints & Sinners. In fact, their first two albums are basically entirely filler aside from the singles.
May 22, 20205 yr Author As for the album, it's SO much better as an album than Saints & Sinners. In fact, their first two albums are basically entirely filler aside from the singles. Their first album, yeah I agree with, but "Saints & Sinners" did have some decent moments & if weren't for the split, then we could have had a few more hits. The next rumoured single "Surrender" was a decent track, a nice dreamy sound to it & could have worked has a single (in a radio edit form), "Dreams" which clearly has that William Orbit sound all over it - a nice successor to "PS". Another standout for me was "One More Tequila" - which has an interesting sound, something they never explored before with its salsa sample tinge to it, why this was only a bonus track was CRIMINAL., could have been an interesting moment for them. As for "Studio 1" - it's not all bad (apart from the lead single), there were a few okay moments like "On And On" with its gentle bleeps & synths (this probably would have been a future single if things worked out) & "Flashback" was a good moment tucked away at the end of the album, definitely one the catchiest album moments, again this could have fared well as a single if things worked out. May 23, 20205 yr Author I'm waiting for this this storm to come #4. All Saints - One Strike | 8.553 Highest Scores: 11: (dandy, Nick F1, George.keh), 10: (SamJudd, :'), blacksquare, ElectroBoy, JosephStyles, Hauspital, Shoat, Sarah, Jay), Lowest Scores: 4: (Jesty Cough), 5: (gavindeejay) At #4 we have yet another All Saints comeback single "One Strike", released in February 2016 as the lead single from their 4th studio album "Red Flag". Penned by none-other than Shaznay Lewis along with production by Hutch & lyrically inspired by the breakdown of Nicole's highly publicized marriage to Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher (namely him cheating on her). Upon release the song was met with critical acclaim (something they didn't get the last time round) & made a minor impact on the UK charts with a #115 official peak & managing top 50 peaks in Scotland & the UK Downloads & Sales charts. A four-track remixes EP was released for digital download a month later. Thankfully this time round their comeback wasn't a total disaster & without all that pressure, the group definitely feels more relaxed & in a much better place with this fantastic little tune with its slinky guitar lines & gorgeous vocal harmonies that has that something which was seriously lacking the last time round- chemistry. While it still has that typical All Saints sound, but with a more updated brassy sound & soulful melodies that perfectly creates that dreamlike soundscape with verses that immediately draw you into all the drama. On the whole this is a brilliant return to form that while sadly couldn't get the attention it deserved thanks to the crappy climate. Shame we didn't get material like this the last time round & maybe things may have turned out for the better, but as this stands its a more than a worthy addition to their discography. q6c4JyUmVSc
