6ix9ine down to just one song in the top 200 ('GOOBA' at #188, 'LOCKED UP PT. 2' has exited entirely). I'd say there's a good chance his album misses the top 10 entirely at this rate but he did have a strong first day on iTunes so he might be saved by pure sales.
It's going to be in and out of the top 50 constantly for as long as Spotify exists, I really don't see what the point of commenting on its every move is.
The thing is I think it’s getting more popular. Last year I’m pretty sure it was only top 50 at New Year and after they did Glastonbury. This year it’s managing to get in on a more regular basis
Mr. Brightside almost has 1B streams on Spotify! :o

So does Wonderwall and Bohemian Rhapsody has been above 1B for a while now

Here's a quick Excel plot of its weekly Spotify positions every week from 2016 to present, make your own conclusions :P

It does look like this year has been generally its most successful (although there have been 2 weeks this year, one of which was very recently, where it was lower than it was in the corresponding week in every previous year). It's just I don't really see that the difference between it being consistently ~10 places higher than usual or whatever is something worth commenting on every week. The main takeaway here is just that it will always be present to some extent (it's consistently top 100 all the time apart from a few weeks at the end of the year, and one outlier week in mid 2018 - 2018 in general seems to have been its worst year for whatever reason).

you'd think by now people would start to actually get sick of playing that song all the time, but clearly it ain't ever going away.

at least it's actually a good song, unlike a certain other song clogging up a space in the Official top 50.

I think what helps it if anything is less about it getting more popular, but that more music being released is splitting the audience of everything else. Like, every year, X amount of people are going to listen to/add to playlist their last ever modern song, but not necessarily stop listening to music. Spotify's demographic will naturally age and it'll reach a tipping point where there just aren't enough people listening to current hits to fight off the swathes of throwback songs. You already see things like this with the OCC's rock chart, where Fall Out Boy's "Centuries" is the newest song in the top 20 (ofc Bring Me The Horizon will probably be #1 next week). This is partly due to how they categorise rock but even if they were generous, we'd still see a climate where new songs are a rarity and not only is it filled with old songs, but it's primarily the same old songs week in week out. If it can happen to rock, it can happen to every other genre (the dance chart is showing a fair few cracks already too).

I don't know how it is on the UK Chart, but I've been very closely monitoring the Australian Spotify chart for a while now, and I've noticed that 18 months ago, there were on average around 50 songs that were 1 year old. Possibly affected by covid, but nowadays there are on average 50 songs that are 2 years old, which is a pretty drastic shift in a short space of time. The iTunes chart in 2015 used to average around 30 songs in the top 200 that were 2+ years old, nowadays it's pretty common to have 60-70. New music is either not being heard or not being wanted by more and more people.

on Apple:

3 Mood

17 Midnight Sky

24 Conan - Heather

31 Calvin/The Wkend

41 Dermot - Giants

47 Sigala/James Arthur

sad to see the lack of interest for Paloma's new single on streaming sites, on Apple it didn't even go top 1500 :/

Mood back to #2

POPSTAR up to #31 (could re enter top 40 this week with the music vid)

Lemonade in at #49

'Lemonade' coming to take advantage of the ACR exodus and enter the top 40 this week maybe ~ I like Don Toliver's hook on that song, could have done with having some slightly more interesting rappers than Gunna and particularly NAV though.
