October 25, 20204 yr She was amazing from Control all the way to the end of the 90s. I wasn't old enough to remember the critical reception at the time but it's so odd how she was getting top 10s either side of the Rhythm Nation era yet every single from that album comparatively struggled.
October 25, 20204 yr never made sense to me, but it was the UK, in the US she went even bigger and especially with the lead, Miss you Much, which was great and a comeback and pre-album single it didn't even go top 20 that should have been massive moreover, she didn't change much anything, the album Rhythm Nation was basically Control 2.0 she only started changing from the last single Love Will Never Do Without You, that was the start of sexy Janet :)
October 26, 20204 yr I've never really paid much attention to Janet Jackson's output at all. I should change that. Edited October 26, 20204 yr by Colm
October 28, 20204 yr Here's the UK Top 40 for 4th February 1990 - the first for Mark Goodier of the 90s, covering for Bruno: https://www.mixcloud.com/EllisYoungWCSRadio...-february-1990/
October 29, 20204 yr Author 17TH FEBRUARY The charts have been set up for a very interesting battle next week, but this week at least “Nothing Compares 2 U” remains unassailable moving a further 128,000 copies over the last 7 days a new 1990 record, Technotronic remain in the runner up spot but they do reduce the deficit albeit slightly to a mere 59,000, posting a sale of 69,000. 0-EF60neguk What do you get when you mash The Clash, Ennio Morricone, and the S.O.S band together? Well the answer is “Dub Be Good To Me” which is essentially a rework of the S.O.S band’s 1984 No 13 hit “Just Be Good To Me” coupled with the bassline from the Clash’s “Guns Of Brixton” by Beats International. Proving what a hotbed of creativity The Housemartins were, this outfit contains Norman Cook who is clearly hoping to beat ex-bandmates outfit The Beautiful South to claim the first chart topper outside the outfit. The song powers 15-3 (48,000) and features the vocals of Lindy Layton who was one time actress in “Grange Hill”. 9dh-wUuT0fI Before Beats International get too excited about trying to catch Sinead O’Connor at the top here’s Black Box with the follow up to last year’s “Ride On Time” which was the best selling single of the year shifting 850,000 copies. The vocalist on the track is subject to speculation though many have again pointed to “Love Sensation” as the inspiration for their new single “I Don’t Know Anybody Else”, it duly arrives with a bang straight in at No 5 (28,000), they deprived Technotronic last time around- can they do so next week? IKgVzWeZ4qw Speaking of following up chart toppers Lisa Stansfield is back with “Live Together”, another track from her “Affection” album which hasn’t left the top 10 since its release 12 weeks ago and rebounds 10-3 this week but still has Phil Collins ahead of it, the album which held it off the top in December. Current single rises 19-10 (19,000). uyR7NK9ykPo In other news Lonnie Gordon sticks at No 4 (36,000) whilst Sybil climbs 9-6 (25,000) to make her version of “Walk On By” the highest charting one, that rise leaves Phil Collins stranded at No 7 (25,000). Mantronix tumble 5-8 (24,000) whilst Kylie Minogue doesn’t have a soft landing as she slumps 3-9 (20,000) 1- NOTHING COMPARES 2 U- Sinead O’Connor (128,000) 2- GET UP! (BEFORE THE NIGHT IS OVER)- Technotronic (69,000) 3- DUB BE GOOD TO ME- Beats International Ft Lindy Layton (48,000) 4- HAPPENIN ALL OVER AGAIN- Lonnie Gordon (36,000) 5- I DON’T KNOW ANYBODY ELSE- Black Box (28,000) 6- WALK ON BY- Sybil (25,000) 7- I WISH IT WOULD RAIN DOWN- Phil Collins (25,000) 8- GOT TO HAVE YOUR LOVE- Mantronix (24,000) 9- TEARS ON MY PILLOW- Kylie Minogue (20,000) 10- LIVE TOGETHER- Lisa Stansfield (19,000)
October 30, 20204 yr So the pick for me this week is the new entry at #17! However since words are trivial, some say unnecessary... I shall leave discussion about it to next week. :P

October 30, 20204 yr Author 24TH FEBRUARY Sinead O’Connor is once again the nation’s favourite singer with “Nothing Compares 2 U” spending a fourth week at the top of the pile, its sales cool to 93,000 but it has now sold an impressive 471,000 copies, a tally only beaten by 4 records in the whole of 1989. Beats International rise 3-2 to pose a threat on paper but “Dub Be Good To Me” sold just 64,000 copies in making that move, enough to finally demote Technotronic 2-3 (59,000) G4yRUO5IR8o Most eyes on the next chart topper seem to be fixed on Michael Bolton whose recent US chart topper “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” storms 22-5 (40,000) this week. It’s Bolton’s first UK hit in his own name though he did co-pen Cher’s 1988 No 5 hit “I Found Someone” so has some form, indeed that track and this one were originally released by Laura Branigan with her version “Supposed” making No 12 in the US in 1983. The song was originally performed on the soap “Knots Landing” with Air Supply originally in the frame to record it for release but after Clive Davis was refused permission to change some of the lyrics it was passed to Branigan. Bolton’s version has however proved the bigger hit. 5UV77navKW4 It might be their 23rd release (including an import) but Depeche Mode have only scored five top 10 hits since their debut in 1981, this week however “Enjoy The Silence” flies 17-6 (37,000) to become their equal 2nd highest peaker, only 1984’’s “People Are People” went better making No 4. The group’s 7th album “Violator” is due next month and will feature this track along with last year’s “Personal Jesus”. jOP71OCyhA8 Elsewhere Black Box have a surge in sales of 110% to 58,000 yet only move a slot 5-4 though if they replicate that again then they could be looking at the No 1 spot next week. Lonnie Gordon tumbles 4-7 (32,000) Sybil strolls 6-8 (23,000) Phil Collins soaks 6-9 (22,000) and Lisa Stansfield holds down anchor place with 20,000 buyers. 1- NOTHING COMPARES 2 U- Sinead O’Connor (93,000) 2- DUB BE GOOD TO ME- Beats International Ft Lindy Layton (64,000) 3- GET UP (BEFORE THE NIGHT IS OVER- Technotronic (59,000) 4- I DON’T KNOW ANYBODY ELSE- Black Box (58,000) 5- HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO LIVE WITHOUT YOU- Michael Bolton (40,000) 6- ENJOY THE SILENCE- Depeche Mode (37,000) 7- HAPPENIN ALL OVER AGAIN- Lonnie Gordon (32,000) 8- WALK ON BY- Sybil (23,000) 9- I WISH IT WOULD RAIN DOWN- Phil Collins (22,000) 10- LIVE TOGETHER- Lisa Stansfield (20,000)
October 31, 20204 yr Thanks for posting that live version of “Enjoy The Silence” Gezza, really loved hearing that. Obviously it is one of my favourite songs of all-time so to see it Top 10 is rather excellent - you just can't imagine songs of that quality ever getting to the Top 10 ever again sadly! IIRC number 1 for an enternity on Colm's 1990s restrospective. :D Nice new entry at 27 this week for Guru Josh - which is 'ripping up the dancefloor' according to Mark Goodier! The 1990s have now arrived !
October 31, 20204 yr IIRC number 1 for an enternity on Colm's 1990s restrospective. :D at least 6 weeks. It is still climbing my all time chart. Top 15, I would say at this stage.
October 31, 20204 yr Enjoy the Silence! I think it’s my favourite song ever, I just never tire of it and it’s even my ringtone  Even the single’s cover art is perfect in its simplicity and style
October 31, 20204 yr Author Can we please avoid posting videos of songs on their way to the top 10 please. Just make it rather pointless me doing it when they get there. Obviously if they aren't going to make it then feel free. (Bear in mind they may make it on re-issue though)

November 2, 20204 yr agree on Enjoy the Silence, amazing song Depeche Mode should have been an even bigger chart force than they were as their songs were incredible, the run of singles that started in 87 with Strangelove and continued with Never Let me Down Again > Behond the Wheel > Personal Jesus > Enjoy the silence is an incredible run in perspective, crazy that Pe4rsonal Jesus didn't go top 10, it's a classic, and didn't even come close to be a big hit, not even top 10...
November 3, 20204 yr 'Enjoy The Silence' is certainly one of Depeche Mode's best songs. The Chris Rea song,'Tell Me There's A Heaven',is one that I didn't notice much at the time but I've come to appreciate it a lot since the 90s as a beautiful song with powerful lyrics.
