LAURA MARLING

British female singer, born 1/2/90

03 Apr 10 Devil's Spoke 97 1 wk

Total Hits : 1 Total Weeks : 1

A big shock here when researching this thread was that this was Laura Marling's only credited dip into the UK Singles Chart.

  • She has six top ten albums (all but her debut).
  • She won the Brit award for Best British Female in 2011, and has been nominated for that same award four other times
  • Four of her albums have been on the Mercury Music Prize shortlist
  • "Semper Femina" was nominated for a Grammy
All this would suggest she might have picked up a minor hit single or two, maybe from the use of one her songs on an advert or something, but no, not really, as all she has to her name is one week at No. 97

I did say "only credited dip into the chart" earlier as she has two uncredited appearances. "5 Years Time" by Noah & The Whale and "Young Love" by Mystery Jets, both of which made considerably higher than 97.

She's not really a singles artist.

“Ghosts” did made #108 in February 2008 - I've got the CD single which I managed to find in the old HMV in Exeter's high street, I bought it with Hot Chip's “Ready For The Floor” CD single which did considerably better.. like 100 places better !

It is a real shame Laura hasn't had more singles success but of course she has a more than solid albums chart record to make up for it.

INNA managing to get more than one major hit in the UK was really quite impressive, she seemed like a fairly archetypal one hit wonder (see also Alexandra Stan). 'Hot' and 'Sun Is Up' were both great songs.

SARAH PHILLIPS

British female singer, born 4/8/93 whose hit single was a tribute to her mother who had just died of cancer

03 Apr 10 Autumn - Tribute To Debbie Phillips 49 1 wk

Total Hits : 1 Total Weeks : 1

Debbie Phillips was just 49 when she died of cervical cancer. Her 16 year old daughter Sarah recorded a cover of a Paolo Nutini song on her mobile phone just hours before Debbie died. A musical accompaniment was added and the song was released with the aim of raising money for the UCL Cancer Research Trust, and it resonated with enough people to make the Top 50.

I'm shocked about Laura's lack of top 100 appearances. :o I'm still gutted 'Is A Hope' was never released in any form despite being memorably used on an episode of Skins.

So to the only non one-hit wonder in this run:

ADAM LAMBERT

American male singer/songwriter, 29/1/82. He was the runner-up on the 2009 series of "American Idol"

17 Apr 10 For Your Entertainment 37 7 wks

10 Jul 10 Whataya Want From Me 53 5 wks

21 Jul 12 Never Close Our Eyes 17 2 wks

20 Jun 15 Ghost Town 71 2 wks

14 May 20 You Are The Champions (Queen & Adam Lambert) 95 1 wk

Total Hits : 5 Total Weeks : 17

Lambert has successfully completed the transition from reality TV contestant to someone with a long term career, exceeding that of the winner of his series of American Idol, Kris Allen.

He hasn't been particulary prolific over the years, this year's "Velvet" being only his fourth studio album, but has successfully carved out a niche working with Brian May and Roger Taylor under the name "Queen + Adam Lambert", all sides making it clear that he wasn't becoming a member of Queen, or being a direct replacement for Freddie Mercury, but working alongside two of the remaining members of Queen (John Deacon doesn't participate).

"You Are The Champions" was a "lockdown special", the three parts recorded separately, re-worked version of the Queen classic "We Are The Champions", released to raise funds for the WHO Covid-19 funds for frontline health service workers.

BEN MONTAGUE

British male singer/songwriter, born 1983

Technically you could say than Ben Montague had exactly the same UK singles chart career as Laura Marling, and you'd be right.

Then there's not much more to say to be honest. He had some quite prominent tour support slots, but none of them ever translated into having any other chart presence.

Adam is extremely underrated as far as his UK chart success is concerned. In an ideal world 'For Your Entertainment' would have gone top 10 and 'Whataya Want From Me' should have been a top 5 follow-up. His current album deserves more love too.

17 Apr 10 Radar Detector 62 2 wks

Total Hits : 1 Total Weeks : 2

Favourites of the NME back in the day, a decent combination of indie pop/rock which maybe deserved to rise a little higher than No. 62. The accompanying album did - it went all the way to No. 61!

Not much else chart success anywhere, but "Radar Detector" did make the "Hottest 100" poll of 2010 by Australian radio station Triple J which is always a very eclectic listing that I've been using as a great way of finding some interesting music for over 20 years now.

'Radar Detector' is another song I remember expecting to be a much bigger hit for some reason! A great and quirky little song, definitely deserved better.

Did “Up In The Clouds” not chart at all? I have that on 7" vinyl.

I kind of lost track of their career after that, apart from “Free (The Editorial Me)” in 2013 which had a really quirky but wonderful video.

You couldn't go anywhere here in 2015 without hearing Ghost Town play  It was "only" #2 but it felt like a massive #1 hit, fantastic song

Whataya Want From Me is honestly one of my favourite songs! I love both his version and Pink's original so much (they probably get equal plays too tbh, I really wish it had made Funhouse's track list)

HALF MAN HALF BISCUIT

British male vocal/instrumental group (Nigel Blackwell, Neil Crossley, Ken Hancock & Carl Henry). Their hit came as part of a campaign to keep BBC Radio 6Music on the air.

17 Apr 10 Joy Division Oven Gloves 56 1 wk

Total Hits : 1 Total Weeks : 1

I mentioned a few acts ago that there were two from this sequence of one-hit wonders who had a more extensive career than their singles chart history alone would indicate, and here's the second one.

One of John Peel's favourites (they did 12 sessions for him), the two founding members (Nigel Blackwell & Neil Crossley) are still touring as HMHB today, 36 years after their debut.

Wiki says they are known for their "satirical, sardonic and sometimes surreal songs" and that about sums them up. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but when they are good they are very good. "The Trumpton Riots" and "All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit" are two of my all time favourites.

As mentioned above, their only singles chart entry was a "campaign record", the campaign was successful as 6 Music remains on the air to this day.

(Oh and breaking my own rules again but please indulge me - it's HMHB after all, here's a live video for "The Trumpton Riots" from the late lamented TV show "The Old Grey Whistle Test")

JOSHUA RADIN

American male singer/songwriter, born 14/6/74

17 Apr 10 I'd Rather Be With You 11 6 wks

Total Hits : 1 Total Weeks : 6

The album "Simple Times" had been originally released in the US in 2008, but it wasn't until two years later before it got a UK release (in a slightly amended version)

His music had been regularly featured on TV shows, particulary "Scrubs" and a video featuring Hayden Panettiere helped "I'd Rather Be With You" to a place very close to the top ten

The song itself is pretty standard singer/songwriter stuff.

Right, that's enough one hit wonders for a while, and it's time for a bit of rock.

Like most rock outfits of the 21st Century, they've been more of an album chart artist than a singles chart one (including "Future Hearts" being a No. 1 in 2015)

The band originally got together in High School, and have had the same four-piece roster since 2003.

Featured vocalist Victor Fuentes is from the band Pierce The Veil, who have not featured in the UK Singles Chart
