Posted November 30, 20204 yr Following from Rooney’s earlier comment... 9. Sanchez - probably the worst transfer that I can remember in the past 10 years in all of English football Who would you say is the worst football transfer of all time? One name that immediately came to mind was Andy Carroll at Liverpool. 2qWAnPag4_E
November 30, 20204 yr Mr Fernando Torres from Liverpool to Chelsea for £50m and of course one Ali Dia.
November 30, 20204 yr Carroll was bad but Torres to Chelsea was even worse... Obviously Sanchez was a huge failure but at least he was a free (yes his wages were insane mind). Can pretty much include most defenders City have bought under Pep. Pepe for Arsenal has to be up there, £70M+ for a few free kicks in the Europa League and f*** all else. Hazard to Madrid has been an expensive flop so far too.
November 30, 20204 yr Torres wasn't a massive success but he did score some important goals and was a massive reason as to why Chelsea reached the Champions League final.
November 30, 20204 yr Author My memory is a bit hazy, but wasn’t Robbie Keane an expensive mistake for Liverpool once upon a time?
November 30, 20204 yr He was only £20m and scored a screamer against Arsenal so not the worst acquisition! Bit embarrassing when he went back to Spurs tho after like a year.
November 30, 20204 yr My memory is a bit hazy, but wasn’t Robbie Keane an expensive mistake for Liverpool once upon a time? Yes he was, joined Liverpool for £19m from Spurs, spent 6 months there and moved back to Spurs.
November 30, 20204 yr There are so many bad transfers that it is hard to keep track of, it's probably easier to look at the bigger clubs and think of their transfer history. Liverpool Carroll Aqualini Keane Man Utd Veron Sanchez Di Maria Talbi Kagawa Bebe Chelsea Torres Shevchenko Mutu Kepa Arsenal Pepe Jeffers Spurs Saha Mido The transfer fees play a part of course, I think Sanchez is the worst that I can remember in recent times. But I think when you look at it there have been so many bad transfers
December 1, 20204 yr He was only £20m and scored a screamer against Arsenal so not the worst acquisition! Bit embarrassing when he went back to Spurs tho after like a year. Rafa never wanted Keane, he kept playing him out on the left wing to make a point to the board!
February 9, 20214 yr Author Is it unfair to suggest that Donny Van de Beek was a misfire in Manchester United signings of recent years? I can see him working hard every match but no assists and no goals, and not enough game time, but will it ever come? I think he will be sent out on loan next season.
February 10, 20214 yr Yeah way too early to write him off but equally I don't agree with this sentiment that has a divine right to just walk into our midfield. Also he has scored a goal for us, in his very first match in fact! (Shame that turned out to be inconsequential to the result tho)
February 10, 20214 yr I think it is harsh to be too critical, some players take a bit longer to settle, especially with covid times. Look at Cancelo or N'Domdele, shocking last year but they look better this year. The one with the Van de Beek, is he doesn't ever seem to play at the same time as Fernandes, so I just don't see how he fits in longer term as Fernandes plays every single game.
February 10, 20214 yr I expect he'll just be a squad player as Fernandes can't play every single match (as much as both him & the fans want to). Probably not what he wants but he has to do the business when he gets those opportunities. Look at Jota, definitely bought as back up but hit the ground running and forced his way into the first team regularly.
