Time to start - here are the first 5 of my 10 favourite artists from this year!

Hayley Williams

hayley-williams-2020-400x200.jpg

Paramore have always been one of my favourite bands, but I love that Hayley's solo material has gone in directions they never quite did before. On her album Petals for Armor she explores a lot of different sounds, from very angsty rock on tracks like 'Sudden Desire' to the absolutely bizarre yet massive bop 'Sugar On The Rim'. Unfortunately it didn't lead to massive chart success out in the real world, but for me she's been an almost constant musical presence - only 2 of her 16 songs have missed my top 10!

Hayley in my chart this year:

2020 01 Simmer (solo or with Caroline Polachek)

2020 04 Leave It Alone

2020 09 Cinnamon

2020 17 Sudden Desire

2020 01 Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris

2020 02 My Friend

2020 03 Why We Ever

2020 05 Dead Horse

2020 01 Pure Love

2020 02 Sugar On The Rim

2020 03 Taken

2020 04 Crystal Clear

2020 05 Watch Me While I Bloom

2020 13 Creepin’

2020 07 Find Me Here

Rina Sawayama

rina-sawayama-deluxe-edition-lucid-single-copy-400x200.jpg

2020 deserved to be the year of Rina. She's constantly delivered bangers - my personal favourite 'XS' is a sort of Britney homage, while there's also echoes of other 00s artists like Christina Aguilera ('Who's Gonna Save U Now?'). She's also capable of incredible covers: her versions of Lady Gaga's 'Dance in the Dark' and The 1975's 'Love It If We Made It' are total perfection.

Rina in my chart this year:

2020 01 XS (solo or with Bree Runway)

2020 23 Chosen Family

2020 03 Comme des Garcons (Like the Boys)

2020 08 Paradisin’

2020 40 Who’s Gonna Save U Now?

2020 05 Dance In The Dark

2020 02 LUCID

2020 03 We Out Here

Phoebe Bridgers

phoebe-bridgers-copy-400x200.jpg

For some reason I'm absolutely horrendous at describing Phoebe's music to people so here I go. Her album Punisher has this certain feeling I can't quite pin down but it perfectly suited the mid-lockdown mood. There's something I really love about the way her lyrics are so specific and detailed - one of my favourites is "You called me from a payphone / They still got payphones / It cost a dollar a minute" from 'Kyoto'.

Phoebe in my chart this year:

2020 07 Kyoto

2020 21 Garden Song

2020 04 Halloween

2020 23 I See You

2020 30 Miracle of Life (with Bright Eyes)

2020 01 If We Make It Through December

2020 28 7 O'Clock News / Silent Night (ft. Fiona Apple & Matt Berninger)

2020 35 Christmas Song

Perfume Genius

perfume-genius-400x200.jpg

Set My Heart On Fire Immediately (that's an album name, not a command) is easily one of the best albums I've listened to all year. The songs here share the common theme of desire, from the longing of 'Describe' to the denial of 'On the Floor'. If you've got the time, his Twitter is also absolutely iconic and I'm obsessed.

Perfume Genius in my chart this year:

2020 20 Pop Song

2020 36 Fool

2020 06 Describe

2020 05 Don’t Let Them In

2020 01 On the Floor

2020 12 Your Body Changes Everything

2020 35 Borrowed Light

2020 36 Just a Touch

2020 37 Leave

2020 38 Moonbend

2020 39 One More Try

2020 40 Some Dream

Christine and the Queens

Christine-And-The-Queens-400x200.jpg

Chris released an EP called La vita nuova earlier this year and even though it's only 6 songs long, it's soundtracked so much of my year. I love the way she uses all these different languages (French, English, Italian, Spanish) across the different songs, even switching between them mid-song. My favourite song here has to be 'La vita nuova', featuring Caroline Polachek, which I always find myself singing along to even though I don't speak Italian!

Christine and the Queens in my chart this year:

2020 26 Gone (with Charli XCX)

2020 02 People, I’ve been sad

2020 26 5 dollars

2020 27 Girlfriend (ft. Dâm-Funk)

2020 01 La vita nuova (ft. Caroline Polachek)

2020 01 Nada

2020 08 Je disparais dans tes bras

2020 10 Mountains (we met)

Lots of great artists in that list! Hope to see Declan nice and high :D

He's got 2 songs in the countdown - unfortunately they might both be showing up sooner than later :kink:

I don't think I've ever heard of Perfume Genius before so giving On The Floor a listen now, it actually does sound like my sort of thing! The whole song is quite nice and I should keep watch for more music by him.

Part 2 of my top artists! And then I'll finally get onto the actual countdown :D

Dua Lipa

Dua-Lipa-Future-Nostalgia-400x200.png

Dua has really solidified herself as an artist this era, I'm sure Future Nostalgia will be remembered for some time to come. What really does it for me is just how much fun it is - 'Levitating', 'Physical', 'Break My Heart' especially are all massive tunes. The performances she's done have been great (Levitating at the Royal Albert Hall? a serve) and I can't wait to see what Side B offers us!

Dua in my chart this year:

2020 01 Physical

2020 07 SUGAR (with BROCKHAMPTON)

2020 01 Break My Heart

2020 02 Cool

2020 03 Hallucinate

2020 04 Levitating (solo / with Madonna, Missy Elliott & The Blessed Madonna / with DaBaby)

2020 05 Love Again

2020 01 Love Is Religion

2020 27 That Kind Of Woman

2020 02 Fever (ft. Angèle)

2020 02 Prisoner (with Miley Cyrus)

Carly Rae Jepsen

Carly-Rae-Jepsen-400x200.png

On the subject of Side Bs... Dedicated Side B dropped earlier this year and I honestly think it's better than the original album. Highlights have to be 'Summer Love', a disco-y bop, 'Comeback', a slow ballad featuring Bleachers, and the duo of 'Felt This Way' and 'Stay Away' which use the same lyrics but with completely different production. As you can see below, Carly's had a ridiculous number of entries in my chart this year but that's mainly due to me allowing any song in regardless of age!

Carly in my chart this year:

2020 05 Trouble in the Streets (with BC Unidos)

2020 18 Black Heart

2020 19 Don’t Speak

Kiesza

crave-kiesza-album-400x200.jpg

Kiesza's been around for a while (Hideaway was actually one of the first songs I ever saved to my Spotify) but this year was when I rediscovered her. Her album Crave was great, with the Carly Rae Jepsen-esque 'All of the Feelings" being a real stand-out along with the more gentle 'Can't Be Saved'. Since then she's risen even higher for me, with songs like 'The Feelings', 'Sensuum Defectui', and 'Bridged By a Lightwave' all proving to be absolute bangers.

Kiesza in my chart this year:

2020 07 Can't Be Saved

2020 27 All of the Feelings

2020 20 Run Renegade

2020 34 Crave

2020 35 Love Me with Your Lie

2020 36 Sky Ain't the Limit

2020 37 When Boys Cry

2020 02 The Feelings (with Boye & Sigvardt)

2020 07 Sensuum Defectui

2020 16 Bridged By A Lightwave (with deadmau5)

2020 36 Eleanor Rigby

2020 24 Chainsaw Melody

Taylor Swift

jyqkm2T.png

Being a Taylor fan this year has certainly been eventful! We've had 2 surprise albums and they've probably turned into my favourite of all her albums. The sound is less straight-up pop than before but it suits her so well and does remind me of some of her older music too. Of course Taylor's lyrics and storytelling have always been incredible but these two albums have really taken it up another level. My favourites have to be 'cardigan', 'the last great american dynasty', 'invisible string', 'no body, no crime', and 'tis the damn season'.

Taylor in my chart this year:

2020 33 I Think He Knows

2020 18 Only The Young

2020 01 cardigan

2020 03 the 1

2020 04 the last great american dynasty

2020 07 exile (ft. Bon Iver)

2020 07 invisible string

2020 20 mad woman

2020 21 mirrorball

2020 40 evermore (ft. Bon Iver)

2020 32 Christmas Tree Farm

Charli XCX

2019-pitchfork-gthumb-ghdata200.jpg

Charli's another artist who just never stops. Her long-awaited 3rd album came out last year and she's already released a 4th, recorded during the early months of lockdown. Songs like 'anthems' and 'c2.0' will probably end up as texts in history exams while 'forever' and 'i finally understand' will go down in history as massive bops.

Charli in my chart this year:

2020 09 I’m A Dream (with BC Unidos)

2020 27 Backseat (ft. Carly Rae Jepsen)

2020 28 February 2017 (ft. Clairo & Yaeji)

Really glad you gave Perfume Genius a go! On The Floor is actually my favourite song by him, if you liked that I'd recommend Without You which is probably the most similar.

Time for the start of my top 100 songs of 2020! I'll be counting down in groups of 5, so here's #96 - #100.

100. Dance in the Dark - Rina Sawayama

Peak: 05 Chart run: 33 - 13 - 5 - 17 - X

This is a cover of a Gaga song from The Fame Monster, and Rina takes the production in a very different direction which is really interesting to hear. I know it's a cliche to say it but she makes it her own and proves that we need a Rina/Gaga collab ASAP!

99. So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings - Caroline Polachek

Peak: 24 Chart run: 26 - 26 - 33 - RE - 29 - 32 - RE - 24 - 26 - 37 - 26 - X

This is the lowest peaking song in this countdown, reaching the dizzying heights of... 24. If I'd done a chart last year I'm sure this would've been a #1, it's one of the best recent pop songs in my opinion. The song sounds very HAIM-esque but it still has that Caroline weirdness to it, with that iconic moment towards the end where she sings "show me the banana" over what could be a saxophone but is in fact her screaming.

98. Let's Be Friends - Carly Rae Jepsen

Peak: 02 Chart run: 2 - 8 - 24 - 13 - X

As a big Carly fan, I'm obligated to say: this is a real outlier in her discography. The grungey cover artwork, tinny vocals, and a bizarre spoken section that's almost Taylor-Swift-lead-single-esque. But nonetheless it's a bop!

97. chinatown - Bleachers ft. Bruce Springsteen

Peak: 01 Chart run: 14 - 1 - 11 - 4 - 9 - 15 - [still charting]

Bleachers songs usually have this great euphoric vibe about them - songs like You're Still A Mystery and Rollercoaster could easily fit alongside Springsteen songs like Born To Run or Dancing In The Dark. So it's great to hear the two of them together, and this song's still hanging around in my chart - expect to see it again in next year's rundown!

96. Feed The Fire - SG Lewis ft. Lucky Daye

Peak: 01 Chart run: 31 - 1 - 3 - 10 - 34 - X

This is just a really smooth, funky song. SG Lewis produced Hallucinate for Dua Lipa and you can hear similar influences on this one. He's become a real powerhouse in my chart, scoring 3 consecutive #1s with Experience, Impact, and this one. Will either of the others turn up later?

  • Author

95. Can't Get Enough Of Myself - Santigold ft. BC Unidos

Peak: 06 Chart run: 6 - 6 - 14 - 25 - RE - 12 - 31 - X

This one's an odd addition to this list as it actually came out in 2015! I stumbled across it listening to BC Unidos's Bicycle EP (more from that later) and ended up playing it ad nauseam throughout the year. It's a feelgood track with a slightly retro feel about loving yourself and it's always fun to listen to!

94. Magic - Kylie Minogue

Peak: 02 Chart run: 2 - 8 - 8 - 14 - 17 - 36 - X

Do you? Believe? In magic? Kylie's 2nd single from Disco clocks in at 94. It's a nice upbeat song that I always end up singing along to - and it's even turned some of my friends into Kylie fans!

93. Salt Licorice - Jónsi ft. Robyn

Peak: 06 Chart run: 24 - 6 - 7 - 12 - 6 - 21 - X

I didn't really know what to expect from this as all I knew previously from Jónsi was his Troye Sivan collab and a couple of Sigur Rós songs. But this is a huge bop and I'm so glad I decided to give it a listen!

92. Rapture - Declan McKenna

Peak: 01 Chart run: 40 - 4 - 1 - 3 - 20 - 28 - X

Declan bending all laws of the English language to rhyme "nature" with "Thatcher" might be one of the more questionable music moments here, but that doesn't stop this from being a brilliant song! Oh, and he seemingly turns into a Dalek towards the end, so there's that too.

91. Snail - BENEE

Peak: 02 Chart run: 2 - 13 - 7 - 12 - 21 - X

Although Supalonely wasn't big on my chart (I loved it but it somehow never smashed), Snail went almost all the way to the top. BENEE compares herself to a snail (we've all been there), which sounds like a weird starting point but it makes for a really fun song.

90. IN A DREAM - Troye Sivan

Peak: 05 Chart run: 5 - 19 - 6 - 12 - 39 - X

The first single from this era (Take Yourself Home) was obviously a red herring as this song returns straight to big pop bangers. I've got good memories from the end of summer while I was seeing friends before we all went our separate ways for uni and we were singing along to Troye's EP, so it's a song I always enjoy going back to!

Hi Ansel!

From your artists of the year I like: Rina Sawayama, Perfume Genius, Christine and the Queens, Dua Lipa, Carly Rae Jepsen and Taylor Swift.

And from your songs so far I like:

92. Rapture - Declan McKenna

97. chinatown - Bleachers ft. Bruce Springsteen

Also sorry that I couldn't comment on your chart, I was very busy. I also have trouble making my own Year-end chart because of how busy I am!

Great lists so far.

Edited by Sergej

Rapture is one of many brilliant songs from Declan, the video is... questionable but the music remains great. I still think Magic is my favourite of the Kylie songs as well, very funky, plusa few other songs I remember listening to in your chart as well (including Snail and Feed The Fire ).

89. Easy - Troye Sivan

Peak: 01 Chart run: 39 - 1 - 9 - 15 - RE - 27 - RE - 36 - 30 - [still charting]

Easy is a bop. It's somehow even more poppy than IN A DREAM, and manages to be such a tune that I didn't even pay attention to the lyrics until a few weeks ago! Underneath it's actually quite a sad song. The new remix with Mark Ronson and Kacey Musgraves is great too.

88. Halloween - Phoebe Bridgers

Peak: 04 Chart run: 22 - 32 - 11 - 4 - 30 - X

Phoebe's been one of my favourite discoveries this year, and listening to her album for the first time this song really stuck out to me. I can't quite describe this properly but it's got an almost apocalyptic nature to it - that really doesn't explain it at all but there's something that really resonates with me.

87. Bella D'Estate - MIKA & Michele Bravi

Peak: 01 Chart run: 5 - 1 - 8 - 19 - X

I think I'll always love MIKA. His early career when he still got hits was incredible - Life in Cartoon Motion absolutely soundtracked my childhood and it's great that he's still making bops. This is actually a cover of an older Italian song from the 80s but I prefer this version - the dramatic synths really make it.

86. Hoping No One Notice - Mahawam

Peak: 12 Chart run: 31 - 12 - 12 - 30 - RE - 39 - X

That 31-12-12-30 run could've been so satisfying! Really love this song, it's a high-tempo song with a lot of energy that I discovered completely by chance on Spotify one day.

85. Say Something - Kylie Minogue

Peak: 01 Chart run: 39 - 5 - 1 - 4 - 29 - X

Here's Kylie again! This was a great lead single even if it wasn't so close to the disco sound it promised. It's very much in the same vein as All The Lovers but unfortunately wasn't the smash it deserved to be :(

Hi Sergej! Glad you liked Rapture and Chinatown! All those artists are great too, nice to see another Perfume Genius fan around here ^_^

Don't worry, by the way - if you've been busy I'm sure that's more important!

Rapture is one of many brilliant songs from Declan, the video is... questionable but the music remains great. I still think Magic is my favourite of the Kylie songs as well, very funky, plusa few other songs I remember listening to in your chart as well (including Snail and Feed The Fire ).

Oops I haven't really watched the Rapture video yet, I just put it there to go with the others! But yes a great song. Glad you enjoyed Magic, I think I've grown to prefer it over Say Something too.

84. What's Your Pleasure? - Jessie Ware

Peak: 02 Chart run: 2 - 8 - 11 - 10 - RE - 40 - X

Jessie Ware was another of my discoveries this year and I'm glad I took the time to listen to her album as it's a really smooth, disco-y listen. It's sort of the flipside to Dua's Future Nostalgia as it's a lot slower but more authentic to the sound it tries to recreate.

83. Crystal Clear - Hayley Williams

Peak: 04 Chart run: 4 - 19 - RE - 24 - X

The first of a LOT of Hayley Williams here. It doesn't have much of a chart run but it gained a lot of streams while outside the chart because of me almost constantly streaming Hayley's album. It's a nice, slow, reflective closer, but doesn't hit any of the highs some other songs manage.

82. 3AM - HAIM

Peak: 01 Chart run: 1 - 7 - 8 - 25 - X

3am is an R&B-style cut from HAIM's album, and it's a great song with a catchy chorus and very funky production.

81. Started Out - Georgia

Peak: 04 Chart run: 17 - 6 - 4 - 14 - X

This was one of Georgia's first hits on my chart at the very start of the year. It's mid-tempo but very danceable and fits nicely along some of her faster songs!

80. The Key To Life On Earth - Declan McKenna

Peak: 05 Chart run: 19 - 5 - 18 - 11 - 36 - RE - 28 - 30 - RE - 32 - X

Easily my favourite Declan song (perhaps ever), this was a hit for me in the early summer. It's about growing up and really captures that strange end-of-things feeling.

Giving Hoping No One Notice a listen now, enjoying the beat! It's one of those songs you can't really put into a box and I quite like that, lots of energy.

Yeah it's a really interesting song, there's so much going on! That's a good way of describing it, it's hard to define but a lot of fun.

Interesting to see Started Out here, that was released a few years ago wasn't it? Great song nonetheless, one of her best and certainly the song that made me want to hear more from her.

79. Can't Be Saved - Kiesza

Peak: 07 Chart run: 18 - 19 - 14 - 10 - 7 - 17 - X

This is the biggest hit from Kiesza's album Crave (although not her biggest hit, that's yet to come) and has a slower, more reflective feel than the dancey ones she's known for.

78. Step Into My Life - Jessie Ware

Peak: 03 Chart run: 4 - 3 - 10 - 28 - X

Easily my favourite from Jessie Ware. No recent song has managed to imitate disco as good as this, the Rose Royce sample is gorgeous and I could listen to it over and over (and I have!).

77. Maestranza - Fleet Foxes

Peak: 04 Chart run: 34 - 22 - 14 - 4 - 5 - 4 - 17 - X

I'm really struggling to think of something to say here as this song is from an album that really has to be listened to as one. Fleet Foxes are so underrated despite the reasonable success they've had. I saw them live a few years back and they put on the best show, it was a weird oversized venue which was nowhere near full so everyone sat on the floor like a school assembly and got up to dance during the more upbeat tracks - plus the encore was almost as long as the actual show!

76. Hallucinate - Dua Lipa

Peak: 03 Chart run: 3 - RE - 26 - 8 - 24 - 26 - RE - 10 - X

Hallucinate is one of my favourite FN tracks and deserved so much better than its low top 40 peak! In my chart it's had a good peak but a pretty chaotic run, entering and peaking on album release week then disappearing until it got pushed as a single, and finally disappearing again and re-emerging when the remix album came out, before once again dropping out. It's crying out for a Kylie feature but we're still waiting.

75. Broken Flowers - Danny L Harle

Peak: 12 Chart run: 28 - 12 - 28 - 33 - 35 - RE - 20 - 30 - X

Another older song (this time from 2013), this one is a nice dance track and I'm glad it still gets radio plays quite often. It's a great introduction to Danny L Harle who has a load of other bangers like Super Natural or 1UL, and ended up charting for me early last year!

That's right - 2018 actually! I only heard it for the first time at the start of 2020 when her album came out. There's quite a few older songs here, I'm not too picky on what enters my chart.

Hey Ansel! Some great songs here so far - Say Something, Easy and The Key to Life on Earth are my favourites, can't wait to see what else is coming!
