34. claws - Charli XCX

Peak: 04 Chart run: 28 - 4 - 4 - 12 - 7 - RE - 27 - 38 - X

Iconic. I've learnt this one off by heart, it's a Charli bop as expected and deserves so much more love!

33. Stupid Love - Lady Gaga

Peak: 03 Chart run: 3 - 5 - 7 - 29 - 19 - RE - 18 - X

This seems to have somehow become a real underrated song from Chromatica despite literally being the lead single and also having us begging for it to get released for weeks? I feel like Rain On Me sort of made everyone forget about it which is a real shame, it's in my opinion the better song.

32. Stop This Flame - Celeste

Peak: 02 Chart run: 2 - 3 - 2 - 11 - 21 - RE - 28 - X

This one did ok on the official charts but should've REALLY smashed - I wish Celeste had used her Brit Awards performance for this instead of Strange. Even though it doesn't sound *that* similar, it sort of reminds me of Florence and the Machine's You've Got The Love. Unfortunately I'm still waiting for something else quite as good as this from Celeste - though her latest single Love Is Back is a strong contender!

31. CALL ME (Freestyle) - Blood Orange ft. Park Hye Jin

Peak: 01 Chart run: 27 - 4 - 3 - 1 - 3 - 1 - 5 - 19 - 26 - X

Obsessed with this. It's a really ambient track that draws you right in - the melody is so catchy. Chart-wise this managed 2 weeks at the top, looking back I would've made it 3 weeks (that middle week where it dropped to #3 was when beabadoobee took the top 2, yet neither of those songs are even in this countdown!).

30. If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know) - The 1975

Peak: 01 Chart run: 1 - 10 - 23 - 27 - 23 - X

Very standard The 1975 fare but that's what I like. A great saxophone solo, and FKA twigs on backing!

29. Rose Rouge - Jorja Smith

Peak: 02 Chart run: 6 - 2 - 15 - 9 - 2 - 12 - X

This is the song I bring out when I want people to think I'm cultured and sophisticated. It's a long, jazzy piece with occasional vocals from Jorja, and it's a great chill out song.

28. I Know Alone - HAIM

" data-tag="youtube" data-tagfull="
">

Peak: 01 Chart run: 32 - 1 - 24 - 18 - RE - 34 - 16 - RE - 38 - X

HAIM bringing back garage music was an unexpected twist but a welcome one! It deserves better than that chart run, it's one of my absolute favourite HAIM songs despite being a bit of a departure from their usual sound.

A very Dua-heavy section there! Break My Heart is I think my favourite of the singles from her last album all things considered. I've heard People, I've been sad a few times as well and it's always sounded pretty nice even if I never added it to my own playlist.

Yes, that's the last of the Dua songs in my countdown! Break My Heart is one that hasn't really aged at all for me.

27. 24 Hours - Georgia

Peak: 01 Chart run: 1 - 4 - 3 - 13 - RE - 32 - X

An early 2020 smash, this is Georgia's biggest hit to date. A heavily synth-ed up bop, it's easily the highlight for me of her discography - other than her cover of Running Up That Hill which is looking to be even bigger this year!

26. Experience - Victoria Monét, Khalid & SG Lewis

Peak: 01 Chart run: 1 - 5 - 16 - 3 - 34 - 21 - X

Experience is a super-smooth disco song which absolutely needed to be a hit this summer! It introduced me to Victoria Monét - her songs Jaguar and Moment are also great and she deserves a big breakthrough!

25. Comeback - Carly Rae Jepsen ft. Bleachers

Peak: 01 Chart run: 1 - 5 - 3 - 4 - 9 - 6 - 18 - 30 - X

Comeback might be a career highlight for Carly - it's a slow, sad song, which sounds very much like a Taylor Swift album track - think The Archer or Getaway Car (that would be the Jack Antonoff influence!). It was the first of 2 chart-toppers for both Carly and Bleachers - Bleachers' follow-up 'chinatown' has already clocked in lower down, while Carly's follow-up is still to come!

24. I'm Yours - Tommy Genesis

Peak: 10 Chart run: 10 - 14 - 24 - RE - 19 - 25 - X

I'm slightly surprised to see this quite so high but that's no bad thing! It sounds like it could've been an actual hit in my opinion (though that might just be in comparison to Bricks, another of Tommy's songs with Charli XCX which is a lot less commercial-sounding!).

23. Video Game - Sufjan Stevens

Peak: 01 Chart run: 29 - 1 - 1 - 6 - 14 - 11 - 24 - 15 - X

Video Game was a bit of a surprise from Sufjan as it's much more pop than usual - leaning right into the synth-pop sound that's popular at the moment, with a TikTok dance music video to boot! It was a 2nd #1 for Sufjan, following America which doesn't make this countdown, being so long (over 12 minutes) that I didn't really listen to it much after the first week!

22. Visitor - Of Monsters and Men

Peak: 01 Chart run: 38 - 18 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 10 - 17 - 8 - 23 - X

Visitor was a massive hit for me, managing 3 weeks on top - one of only two to do this, the second is yet to come. It's a great song, feeling like a sequel to Little Talks which was their actual big hit. The line "just like my parents' house, I've become a visitor" felt very relevant as I was listening to this a lot around the time I moved out for uni!

21. Dead Horse - Hayley Williams

Peak: 05 Chart run: 30 - 13 - 5 - 6 - 10 - RE - 17 - 17 - 25 - 37 - X

Dead Horse is one of the more pop moments from Hayley's album, even if the title wouldn't suggest that! It sounds like a song from Paramore's last album, with a slightly reggae-pop twist.

Visitor didn't grab me as much as Wars/Wild Roses but was still a very good song, a very different style from them which was nice to hear! The 'parent's house' line hit me as well since I moved down to the other side of the country on placement after spending the whole of lockdown with family.

24 Hours, Stop This Flame and If You're Too Shy are other highlights from that section as well!

20. Nada - Christine and the Queens

Peak: 01 Chart run: 2 - 1 - 5 - 10 - 15 - 34 - X

I'll admit, this one being so high feels slightly wrong. Nada isn't really a song I return to much, even if the EP it's from (La vita nuova) is one of my favourite bodies of work from 2020. The best song from it is still to come!

19. Comme des Garçons (Like the Boys) - Rina Sawayama

Peak: 03 Chart run: 24 - 3 - 7 - 20 - 31 - 39 - RE - 20 - X

Comme des Garçons is a club-ready ANTHEM. It's a really fun song with Rina in full confidence mode, similar to XS - stay tuned for that one further up the rankings!

18. The Steps - HAIM

Peak: 04 Chart run: 25 - 4 - 11 - 12 - RE - 40 - RE - 33 - RE - 37 - RE - 16 - 34 - RE - 36 - X

I didn't expect this one to be quite so high, but I suppose with a chart run that long, it's to be expected! It's a very classic-sounding country-rock track with a great catchy chorus.

17. Sugar On The Rim - Hayley Williams

Peak: 02 Chart run: 2 - 20 - 34 - 7 - 18 - 9 - 38 - RE - 38 - X

Earlier on I said that Pure Love shouldn't have been a #1 for me, and instead another song from the album should've got there. This is that song! It's a bizarre song which doesn't really fit on a predominantly "alternative" album - it almost sounds like it could be by Madonna or Gaga? One of my absolute favourite songs of the year, it had a bit of an odd chart run, alternating in-and-out of the top ten. But definitely deserved the top spot instead of a #2 peak.

16. Over Yet - Hayley Williams

Peak: 01 Chart run: 1 - 3 - 2 - 5 - 20 - 11 - 35 - 35 - X

Another slight outlier from Petals For Armor - this is a great synth-pop track that has echoes of Janet Jackson in the chorus. I really love Hayley's angstier rocky stuff but this is just brilliant, more bops like this would be appreciated!

Interesting to hear that bit resonated with you too! And those 3 you've mentioned are great ^_^

15. La thune - Angèle

Peak: 05 Chart run: 35 - RE - 11 - 8 - 5 - 22 - 20 - 21 - 7 - 8 - 25 - 27 - RE - 20 - 22 - 31 - X

Yeah I listened to Angèle before Fever 😎 This is a song from 2018 (older songs were very commonplace in the early months of my chart) but I found it at the start of 2020 - it's got slightly Lily Allen vibes which I really enjoyed.

14. Don't Judge Me - Janelle Monáe

Peak: 05 Chart run: 19 - 12 - 22 - 5 - RE - 31 - RE - 36 - 17 - 22 - 40 - RE - 37 - 37 - X

A very erratic chart run here, for another older song! It's a chilled, seductive track which I think really makes the case for Janelle to do a Bond theme. This song is coming up to 3 years old and I've been listening to it on-and-off ever since then, but it's probably slightly out of place in a 2020 year-end chart!

13. elevator girl - Shura ft. Ivy Sole

Peak: 03 Chart run: 3 - 22 - 35 - 6 - 13 - 6 - 24 - 24 - RE - 21 - X

I'm a massive Shura stan so this song was a really nice surprise early in the year, after her 2019 album 'forevher'. It follows the same formula as that album, with really cool slow R&B production.

12. Automatic Driver - La Roux

Peak: 01 Chart run: 6 - 5 - 4 - 1 - 12 - RE - 19 - 22 - RE - 23 - X

If I'm honest? If I was basing this solely on personal opinion rather than streams, I'd have this a lot lower, if I even decided to put it in the top 100 at all. It's a bit of a forgotten #1 for me now - I enjoyed La Roux's album but this song did get old for me quite quickly and I tend to skip it now.

11. La vita nuova - Christine and the Queens ft. Caroline Polachek

Peak: 01 Chart run: 1 - 9 - 4 - 9 - 14 - 32 - RE - 14 - RE - 31 - X

Utterly obsessed with this one. Christine and Caroline are among my favourite artists so this collaboration was a huge treat! It's so atmospheric and catchy - plus it's always nice to learn a bit of Italian.

10. Summer Love - Carly Rae Jepsen

Peak: 01 Chart run: 6 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 4 - 7 - 17 - 31 - X

LOVE this. Summer Love is the best song from Dedicated Side B (I think I said the same about Comeback, actually - ok, they're both the best). It's a sad shimmery disco track perfect for late summer.

Carly's top 40 history is ridiculously long so here's her year-end history instead:

2020 ?? Trouble in the Streets (with BC Unidos)

2020 10 Summer Love

2020 25 Comeback (ft. Bleachers)

2020 47 Want You In My Room

2020 59 This Love Isn't Crazy

2020 69 Never Get to Hold You

2020 73 Julien

2020 98 Let's Be Friends

9. TKN - Rosalía ft. Travis Scott

Peak: 01 Chart run: 21 - 7 - 13 - 17 - 4 - 1 - 18 - 38 - X

Forever grateful to TikTok for giving this a bit of a moment - even if top 40 was out of the question :( For me, at least, it hit the top spot - eventually! It's a fast-paced track which is now one of my favourites from Rosalía, even if I do still struggle to sing along without stumbling!

Rosalía's top 40 history:

2020 01 TKN (ft. Travis Scott)

2020 29 KLK (with Arca)

2020 10 LA NOCHE DE ANOCHE (with Bad Bunny)

2021 12 Lo Vas A Olvidar (with Billie Eilish)

Travis Scott's top 40 history:

2020 01 TKN (with Rosalía)

8. Midnight Sky - Miley Cyrus

Peak: 02 Chart run: 3 - 4 - 16 - 11 - 17 - 37 - RE - 2 - 19 - 20 - 6 - X

I'm quite surprised this got all the way up here but pleased to see it! The Edge Of Midnight version with Stevie Nicks has become my favourite and I've made all my friends listen to it quite a lot. It had an odd chart run for me, never quite reaching the top but reaching a new peak very late.

Miley Cyrus's top 40 history:

2020 02 Midnight Sky (solo or Edge of Midnight Remix with Stevie Nicks)

2020 09 Heart of Glass

2020 09 Zombie

2020 02 Prisoner (ft. Dua Lipa)

2020 01 Angels Like You

2020 02 Gimme What I Want

2020 03 Night Crawling (ft. Billy Idol)

2020 10 Plastic Hearts

2020 16 WTF Do I Know

Giving the Shura song a listen now, it's sounding quite nice, very chilled out and relaxing and the rap (presumably from the featured artist?) is decent as well.

7. In My Room - Frank Ocean

Peak: 02 Chart run: 27 - 35 - 19 - 2 - RE - 11 - 27 - 12 - 20 - 14 - 12 - 18 - 40 - RE - 31 - 33 - X

A mess of a chart run, dropping out from its peak of #2 ! However it's a great song which never really got old for me. It came out around the end of 2019 but crossed over into 2020 for me, in a big way.

Frank Ocean's top 40 history:

2020 35 DHL

2020 02 In My Room

2020 03 Cayendo

2020 04 Dear April

6. Me & You Together Song - The 1975

Peak: 01 Chart run: 1 - 5 - 10 - RE - 16 - RE - 18 - 37 - RE - 24 - X

This is such a coming-of-age anthem - I know The 1975 aren't everyone's cup of tea but this sounds like a real classic, and I know the whole thing off by heart!

The 1975's top 40 history:

2020 01 Me & You Together Song

2020 34 The Birthday Party

2020 07 Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America

2020 01 If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)

2020 15 Guys

2020 13 Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy)

2020 25 Nothing Revealed / Everything Denied

5. rock bottom - MisterWives

Peak: 02 Chart run: 2 - 2 - 19 - 13 - 35 - 4 - 6 - 12 - 17 - 29 - X

After a great first album, MisterWives almost lost me on their second one. Songs with vague, nothing-y lyrics and an increasingly grating "indie girl" voice sort of ruined that spark they initially had. But their third album was a revelation and really rivals their first. This song especially feels like they've found the right sound to suit the lead singer's vocals - it reminds me lyrically of Hard Times by Paramore and it's such a banger!

MisterWives' top 40 history:

2020 01 whywhywhy

2020 38 coming up for air

2020 33 Box Around the Sun

2020 02 rock bottom

2020 13 SUPERBLOOM

2020 10 decide to be happy

2020 13 3 small words

2020 15 love me true

2020 16 valentine’s day

2020 28 ghost

2021 10 buzz cut (with lovelytheband)

Glad you liked it! Yeah the rap part is Ivy Sole.

Ok I've really slowed down with this but I'm determined to get it out of the way

4. XS - Rina Sawayama

Peak: 01 Chart run: 1 - 15 - 3 - 22 - 26 - 20 - 11 - 10 - 16 - RE - 23 - 36 - X

Oh me, oh my! XS was my first experience of Rina, and what an experience it was. It draws heavily on Britney, but with a clever anti-consumerist twist. Rina truly is the comrade we need, and she's well overdue for a big breakthrough!

Rina Sawayama's top 40 history:

2020 01 XS (solo or with Bree Runway)

2020 23 Chosen Family

2020 03 Comme des Garcons (Like the Boys)

2020 08 Paradisin’

2020 07 Tokyo Love Hotel

2020 33 Akasaka Sad

2020 33 Bad Friend

2020 35 Dynasty

2020 36 F*** This World (Interlude)

2020 37 Love Me 4 Me

2020 38 Snakeskin

2020 39 STFU!

3. Trouble in the Streets - BC Unidos ft. Carly Rae Jepsen

Peak: 05 Chart run: 15 - 5 - 17 - 15 - 8 - 7 - 14 - 21 - RE - 20 - 16 - 6 - 23 - 24 - 17 - 8 - 16 - 26 - 29 - RE - 21 - 23 - 32 - X

Well, that's quite a chart run! 21 weeks on the chart is a record by far - the closest being Angèle's 14 weeks with La Thune. This is a song from 2017 but I found myself listening to it a lot in the first half of the year. Trouble in the Streets is a bit of a departure from Carly's usual synth-pop sound, but fits nicely amongst BC Unidos's very eclectic sound. It's been tarnished recently by the fact that Ariel Pink co-produced it, which is a shame.

BC Unidos' top 40 history:

2020 03 Bicycle (ft. Shungudzo)

2020 06 Can’t Get Enough Of Myself (with Santigold)

2020 09 I’m A Dream (ft. Charli XCX)

2020 10 Ouagadougou (ft. Shungudzo)

2020 05 Trouble in the Streets (ft. Carly Rae Jepsen)

2. Simmer - Hayley Williams

Peak: 01 Chart run: 19 - 1 - 4 - 1 - 3 - 16 - 15 - RE - 1 - 18 - 30 - 14 - RE - 16 - X

Hayley's first solo single was a huge smash for me. I remember seeing it in the official chart midweeks but unfortunately it fell out before Friday :( The opposite was true for me, with it being the first song (and to date, one of only two) to make it 3 weeks on top. The third week was thanks to the Caroline Polachek remix - unfortunately Caroline doesn't really add any vocals other than backing, it's more of an experiment in production which makes a fun listen after you've got familiar with the original.

Hayley Williams's top 40 history:

2020 01 Simmer (solo or with Caroline Polachek)

2020 04 Leave It Alone
