The massive influence of TikTok on the charts over the past year or two is actually pretty mad.

 

I'm absolutely here for it, as it gives a leg up to a lot of artists that would not usually be within sniffing distance of success or exposure, but to say that a sea shanty is exploding on both sales and streaming is absolutely mad, and perhaps proof that if radio and TV music channels were more open to playing different genres the charts might not feel so dominated by the same couple of styles and sounds all the time.

 

It's refreshing that there doesn't seem to be any genre or artist snobbery on TikTok, if people like something, it catches on. People don't care if it's a Eurovision song, an old classic, an obscure album track or just a good song from a new artist. I expect it can't be too long before it pushes novelty songs back into the charts. You could argue that the club mix of Wellerman is halfway there, but I don't see it stopping here.

Yeah the 2019 tracks it boosted I wasn't too fussed with, but there's been quite a few faves from the last year I've discovered on there! Surfaces, BENEE, Borns, Life Without Buildings, Wellerman and Wallows come to mind.

Seems like this could struggle to go top 40.

'Tick Tock' only just debuted top 40 and that had a bigger name collab, I'm sure this new song from them will climb over time as well.

 

Kinda surprised to see the Summer Walker collab from Fredo's album being ahead of the Pop Smoke/Young Adz one on Apple Music at the moment although I guess it's helped by being earlier in the tracklist. Looks like 'Money Talks' and 'Back To Basics' will be his top 2 songs and it'll be between those two for his third song.

Looks like 'Money Talks' should have a good chance of debuting at #2 this week, it's pretty comfortably #2 on Spotify today (489k compared to 288k for The Kid LAROI). #2 on Apple as well and no doubt doing huge numbers on YouTube. I guess the demand for new Dave music must be pretty huge atm, this is doing far better than the Dave collab from the previous Fredo album!

 

The Pop Smoke/Young Adz collab enters Spotify at #3 (311k), Summer Walker collab is #6, 'Back To Basics' up to #7 (that's also dropped to his 4th song on Apple so I may have spoken too soon about it remaining one of his 3 chart eligible songs?) and the rest of his tracks are at 13, 17, 28, 29, 30, 33 and 51.

 

Kind of surprised just how muted the chart showing for Chip's mixtape is, only 1 song in the top 100 on Spotify and 5 in the top 200 (mostly only the collabs that have charted - Bugzy Malone collab at #69, 'Lumidee' re-entering at #147, one solo song at #165, MoStack collab at #173 and Headie One collab at #179). Maybe Fredo's release is overshadowing it. In any case looks like he'll have to continue to wait for another top 40 hit as lead artist (excluding the Skepta/Chip/Young Adz songs where he was only joint lead).

 

Arlo Parks surprisingly managing a small album bomb as well, nothing in the top 100 but 3 songs in the top 200! No show for Celeste, very curious to find out if her pure sales will outweigh Fredo's streams.
