My Predictions vs the actuals:

bolded are the noms!

Best Picture (Drama):

1. Nomadland

2. The Trial of Chicago 7

3. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

4. The Father

5. Judas & The Black Messiah

Alt: Mank, Promising Young Woman, One Night In Miami, News of the World, Da 5 Bloods, Sound of Metal

confident in the top 2, the last 3 spots are a bloodbath (I think Ma Rainey makes it tho)

3/5: Yep I knew I should've had more doubts about Ma Rainey! Yikes at all the films led by POC missing. Didn't do too badly predictions-wise, knew I should've put PYW in over Judas!

Best Actress Drama:

1. Viola Davis - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

2. Frances McDormand - Nomadland

3. Carey Mulligan - Promising Young Woman

4. Vanessa Kirby - Pieces of a Woman

5. Sophia Loren - The Life Ahead

6. Zendaya - Malcom & Marie

Alt: Andra Day - The United States vs Billie Holiday (maybe Amy Adams - Hillbilly Elegy or Kate Winslet - Ammonite could make it but probs just between top 7 here)

top 3 should be safe & then again a bloodbath between the other 4. predicting this is one of the rare times we get a six nominee category at the globes

4/5:

Andra made it! The obvious 4 and I left the wrong one out for the last spot ahh!

Best Drama Actor:

1. Chadwick Boseman - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

2. Anthony Hopkins - The Father

3. Riz Ahmed - Sound of Metal

4. Delroy Lindo - Da 5 Bloods

5. Tom Hanks - News of the World

Alt: Gary Oldman (Mank), Tom Holland (Cherry), Mads Mikkelsen (Another Round), George Clooney (Midnight Sky), Steven Yeun (Minari), Tahar Rahim (The Mauritanian), Lakeith Stanfield (Judas & The Black Messiah), John David Washington (Malcolm & Marie)

top 3 set to go, Lindo should be in but I wouldn't be beyond shocked at a snub. 5th spot is a bloodbath between all the names above

3/5:

They loved Mank! And ik we we're gonna get a random nom, the tea about Rahim was right! And I knew I should've stuck to my gut with Lindo getting snubbed

Best Film Comedy/Musical:

1. Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm

2. The Prom

3. Hamilton

4. Emma

5. Palm Springs

Alt: On The Rocks, Personal History of David Copperfield, Music, Wild Mountain Thyme, Eurovision

There's rumours they really liked Music, hopefully that turns out like the Cats tea from last year. Anywhere yikes this category is weak. Rooting for an Emma nom!

4/5:

Help the Music tea was true I'm crying

Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress:

1. Maria Bakalova - Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

2. Meryl Streep - The Prom

3. Anya Taylor-Joy - Emma

4. Christin Milioti - Palm Springs

5. Emily Blunt - Wild Mountain Thyme

Alt: Rashida Jones (On the Rocks), Rosamund Pike (I Care a Lot), Michelle Pfeiffer (French Exit), Kristen Stewart (Happiest Season), Meryl Streep (Let Them All Talk), Rachel McAdams (Eurovision), Tessa Thompson (Sylvie's Love), Millie Bobby Brown (Enola Holmes), Margot Robbie (Birds of Prey)

top 2 are locks, after that I think we could be in for some surprises. I feel ATJ should be good with her massive 2020 year, last 2 spots could go to any of the above tbh. Rooting for Anya & Kristen!

2/5:

Oops, didn't even have Kate Hudson for Music in my alts! I nearly went for Rosamund over Emily, I should've ffs. The Meryl snub is shocking, literally no one was predicting that

Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor:

1. Sacha Baron Cohen - Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

2. Andy Samberg - Palm Springs

3. Dev Patel - Personal History of David Copperfield

4. Lin-Manuel Miranda - Hamilton

5. James Cordon - The Prom

Alt: Pete Davidson (Staten Island), Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton), Jamie Dornan (Wild Mountain Thyme), Will Ferrell (Eurovision)

I don't want to predict James but I have a bad gut feeling. Tbh SBC is probs the only one locked (& I feel good about Samberg) but no one apart from these 9 names are getting in

5/5

Let's go :cheer:

Supporting Actress:

1. Amanda Seyfried - Mank

2. Olivia Colman - The Father

3. Ellen Burstyn - Pieces of a Woman

4. Jodie Foster - The Mauritanian

5. Nicole Kidman - The Prom

Alt: Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari), Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy), Helena Zengel (News of the World), Olivia Cooke (Sound of Metal), Renee Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton), Dominique Fishback (Judas & the Black Messiah)

I'm probs over-estimating Globes starf***ing for their faves + being rational enough to snub Hillbilly. Youn can def make it in here too. Anyone apart from these names would be a big surprise.

3/5:

Great for Glenn & Helena's Oscar chances, not so good for Youn & Ellen especially. They went for half of the starf***ing

Best Supporting Actor:

1. Daniel Kaluuya - Judas & the Black Messiah

2. Sacha Baron Cohen - The Trial of Chicago 7

3. Kingsley Ben-Adir - One Night in Miami

4. Leslie Odom Jr. - One Night In Miami

5. Chadwick Boseman - Da 5 Bloods

Alt: Bill Murray (On The Rocks), Paul Raci (Sound of Metal), Mark Rylance (Chicago 7), David Strathairn (Nomadland), Frank Langella (Chicago 7), Colman Domingo or Glynn Turman (Ma Rainey's), Bo Burnham (Promising Young Woman)

anyone else here would be a shock, I kinda feel good about that top 5 despite it not being the consensus prediction

3/5:

Still laughing at the Jared Leto nom for the little things, yikes. Knew I probs should've kept Murray in as the consensus predicted!

Best Director:

1. Chloe Zhao - Nomadland

2. Aaron Sorkin - The Trial of Chicago 7

3. David Fincher - Mank

4. Spike Lee - Da 5 Bloods

5. George Clooney - The Midnight Sky

Alt: Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), Regina King (One Night in Miami), Paul Greengrass (NOTW), George C. Wolfe (Ma Rainey), Lee Isaac Chung (Minari), Florian Zeller (The Father), Shaka King (Judas), Darius Marder (Sound of Metal), Kornel Mundruczo (Pieces of a Woman)

Any of that top 4 missing would be a surprise snub

3/5:

Damn I swapped Emerald out for Clooney last min, knew the former could have surprised!

Best Screenplay:

1. The Trial of Chicago 7

2. Nomadland

3. Promising Young Woman

4. The Father

5. Mank

Alt: One Night in Miami, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Soul, Minari, Da 5 Bloods, News of the World, Malcolm & Marie

probs between the top 9 but idk

Let's go :cheer:

Best Animation:

1. Soul

2. Wolfwalkers

3. Over the Moon

4. Onward

5. Trolls: World Tour

Alt: The Croods: A New Age, The Willoughbys, Shaun the Sheep 2

top 4 locked, battle between the next 4 for 5th spot

4/5:

Obvs top 4 made it, knew I should've gone with Croods over Trolls!

Best Foreign Language:

1. Minari

2. Another Round

3. The Life Ahead

4. Quo Vadis, Alda?

5. La Llorona

Alt: Dear Comrades, I'm No Longer Here

4/5:

Happy with this! Two of Us was the other nominee

Best Original Score:

1. Soul

2. Mank

3. The Midnight Sky

4. Da 5 Bloods

5. The Trial of Chicago 7

Alt: Tenet, News of the World, Minari

3/5:

knew I should've predicted Tenet

Best Original Song:

1. Speak Now - One Night in Miami

2. Hear My Voice - Chicago 7

3. Tigress & Tweed - United States vs Billie Holiday

4. lo si - The Life Ahead

5. Husavik - Eurovision

Alt: Together (Music), Just Sing (Trolls 2), Wear Your Crown (The Prom), Fight For You (Judas)

my head says just sing or the trash from Music/The Prom, my heart says husavik

4/5:

Poor Husavik!

Apart from Music and The Prom doing better in every field than I expected, they're all pretty much as I expected. Zendaya I would have been more shocked to have seen her miss had I not see your predictions prior (how you made her 6th and only put her through coz you thought they'd extend the category). Happy for Vanessa though

Yay for Hamilton. I really hope they get something, but at this point everything in comedy/musical is likely to go to Borat  That last place in animation should have gone to 'The Willoughbys' tbh. Happy for 'Over The Moon'. It's so gorgeously animated!

3 women in director! *.* Eek at the POC led films COMPLETELY missing in Best Picture. Why do they love 'Mank'? I'm struggling to come round to watching it (even as a huge Fincher fan) just coz I've heard nothing about it except that it's ridiculously boring! :(

Globes we're tonight and wow there were some shocks!!

In summary

Song - Diane Warren finally coming for her Oscar?!

Score & Animation - Soul unsurprisingly wins both

Screenplay - Chicago 7 unsurprisingly wins

Foreign Language - Minari unsurprisingly wins

Borat 2 also won comedy & actor

Boseman & Kaluuya on their way to sweep actor/supporting actor this season

Zhao won director <3

The actress categories though... OMG.

the globes have just thrown about 50 spanners in the works  supported by Gold Derby's odds, we had 5th in Drama Actress, a beyond distant 4th in Supporting Actress & 2nd in Comedy Actress (beyond distant from 1st and close to 3rd/4th) win!!! wow. all the winners missed SAG as well!

I'm so glad for Andra Day, she's phenomenal!! That category is v. interesting now cos obvs Andra missed SAG & BAFTA longest. Different winner at each? (Viola - SAG & Carey - BAFTA are my predicts)

Rosamund Pike!! I don't think she breaks actress at Oscars (that 5 feels locked now) but damn that hurts Maria's chances for a nom, should've been an easy win

Jodie Foster!! and she's the only one of the five everyone was confident in having no chance of making it to the Oscars  That category is INSANE rn. Honestly possible noms for Bakalova, Burstyn, Close, Colman, Foster, Seyfried, Youn, Zengel are all plausible & honestly Colman is the only one that's definitely in, utterly crazy!! I think Youn could win rn but who knows

And Nomadland beat Trial for Pic :o sweep incoming

3 drama noms (Father, Mank, PYW) all going for 0, wow.

biggest surprise for me was Lady Di beating Queen Elizabeth!!

biggest surprise for me was Lady Di beating Queen Elizabeth!!

I was expecting that haha! I think she's sweeping on the way to the Emmy! Though Olivia's golden globe sweep is over now

I think if I'd bothered to make predictions on the TV side I might've got 100% So glad in particular that Anya & The Queen's Gambit won

The queen's gambit wins were predictable

but I really thought they were gonna award Olivia again

or maybe I'm biased cos I didn't really like how they presented Diana's character

well... those were CRAZY.

Main contenders snubbed:

- Gary Oldman

- Carey Mulligan (!!)

- Viola Davis

- Sacha Baron Cohen

- Glenn Close

- Olivia Colman

- Jodie Foster (and the Mauritanian made literally every other category!)

- Amanda Seyfried

I’m so confused by the Carey Mulligan snub!? I was sure this was hers to loose out of all the big awards

  • Author

I love this season so much, Best Actress & Supporting Actress are INSANE! The way we can honestly see different winners at all four of the main precursors is crazy (SAG, Globes, BAFTA, Critics Choice)

so far for Best Actress we've had:

Globes - Day & Pike

Critics Choice - Mulligan

Davis can win SAG and then McDormand/Kirby at BAFTA

for best supporting actress:

Globes - Foster

Critics Choice - Bakalova

then Youn at SAG and maybe Ali at BAFTA? I feel this one has become more likely for a repeat winner now with either Bakalova or Youn winning SAG/BAFTA!

I’m so confused by the Carey Mulligan snub!? I was sure this was hers to loose out of all the big awards

Same!!! I'm full on shocked (I actually predicted the Viola snub but I was convinced Carey was getting in!)

> OTHERS <

(For categories such as: Cinematography, Editing, Hair & Make-Up etc..)

Surprised that Alan Kim got in for Supporting Actor for 'Minari' but Steven Yeun completely missed!

I'm happy though. Alan was brilliant!

I do really like that I've heard of hardly ANY of those in the acting categories

it's usually the same motley crew scattered with a few unknowns here and there
