It really is criminal how much more success One Direction had than JLS they have so much more charisma and stage presence that One Direction ever had.

JLS are far better singers than One Direction and with the right type of tracks, they could be really good. 1D were very manufactured and bland as hell.

One Direction had four out of five members being white and they were all teens. JLS were always going to lose out to them.

Never underestimate the power and fickleness of tween girls.

whilst race does possibly play some note to it, we have to remember Zayn was mixed and had a remarkably successful debut era considering he never did a live performance or promo. The likes of white members (Liam and Louis) didn't see any equal success?

I do also think that even now, JLS’ music has aged remarkably poorly (they’re still bangers though) in comparison to One Direction’s.

1D stood out more individually with their personalities too I think - they definitely have charisma and stage presence even though JLS are obviously much better dancers, don't forget how huge a touring act 1D were (and will be again when/if they reunite, the demand is ridiculous and I fully expect a reunion tour to sell out in minutes if not quicker). Did race play a part? Who knows, but I don't think you can put it entirely down to that - 1D's songs clearly caught on in a far bigger way and it's not like JLS did terribly in comparison, their music just grew dated much more quickly and they burnt out (while also never making it worldwide on a level even close to 1D), as much as I love many JLS songs!

(and as for who has "better singers", I think both groups have their clear strong and weak links...)

I’ve heard from a friend who knows Marvin that JLS are now done again for the foreseeable future.

Makes sense the real money is made from the tour, so now they’ve cashed in and the album sold pretty poorly it’s back to solo work haha!

I wonder if the tour didn't do as well as they hoped or if they genuinely thought the album was going to sell well?

They added extra dates to the tour so it must have sold decently well!

I think it’s more the case that it was just a thing to celebrate the group’s 10th anniversary.

You don't record an entire album as a "thing" to celebrate a groups 10th anniversary

If it was a one-off performance, fair enough but this took a lot of time, money, contracts had to be signed etc. If anything, I assume they've been dropped if there really won't be any follow up.

I can't say I'm entirely surprised. That they eventually got to do the tour is a miracle in and of itself considering everything that was chucked their way in the last two years with COVID etc.

I imagine they will probably bide their time and take a leaf out of Steps' book whereby they return when there's an anniversary to mark - 15 years, 20 years, whenever that may be, because there'll be more impetus to hang a campaign off of.

I'm gutted I had to end up cancelling going to the tour myself but I know on reflection I wouldn't have fully enjoyed it with all the restrictions that were still in place at the time. I'm optimistic that they'll do something again someday, if not in the immediate future.

It doesn't take away from the album either; it's still a wicked album and so many bops and I love it. Statistically because they are viewed as a "heritage act" they were always going to be on a back foot from that angle. But Radio 2 and Capital really got behind it, they did loads of TVs, and it went top 5 which considering what other albums it was up against - Adele, ABBA, Ed Sheeran - was an achievement.

I read somewhere that they weren't going to tour or release an album this year at least but who knows next year.

I couldn't see them doing what they used to and release a new one every year.

still iconic that a fake jls out peaked everything on streaming than real jls
Oritse blocked me on Instagram when I said 2.0 doesn’t hold up as well as some of their old albums. Oops.

To be fair, if you did say it directly to him it's sort of rude isn't it? :arrr:

Probably because it was rude if you said it to him directly.
Hardly rude it is an opinion. Should everyone just praise him for something that maybe wasn’t as good?

It is rude to basically say to an artist directly that "hey, the new album your promoting isn't as good as your old stuff". Like why? I very much doubt Oritse asked for his opinion...
