Alan Pardew has been sacked as manager of West Ham.

The Hammers are in 18th place in the Premiership following a run of three straight defeats that culminated in Saturday's 4-0 thrashing at Bolton.

"Alan has made an important contribution since joining in September 2003 but this season's results have been disappointing," said a statement.

"Chairman Eggert Magnusson and the board feel it is the right time to make a change in the club's best interests."

The statement continued: "The search for a successor is now under way in order that a new manager can be in place ahead of the January transfer window.

"First-team coach Kevin Keen will take temporary charge of team affairs until a new appointment has been made.

"No further statements on this matter will be made by the club before that time."

Former Charlton boss Alan Curbishley, who played for the Hammers from 1975 to 1979, has been installed as the early favourite to take over as manager.

Pardew told the club website he was proud of his achievements with the club.

"In two consecutive seasons we qualified for the play-offs, ultimately achieving the Premiership status the club so richly deserve," he told the West Ham website.

"I am also proud of our first season back in the top flight in which we finished ninth and came so close to winning the FA Cup.

"The supporters have stood by me and I will always cherish memories of their support and loyalty during the difficulties of this season.

"I am proud most of all of the players, many of whom have developed into top Premiership performers under the tutelage of myself and my backroom staff.

"The coaching and medical staff at Upton Park are second to none and I want to wish the new chairman Eggert Magnusson and the club every success for the future."

Following a disappointing start to the season, the Hammers were briefly boosted when a consortium led by Magnusson completed a £85m takeover, with the team winning their next match against Sheffield United.

Magnusson initially vowed to keep faith with Pardew, promising funds for the January transfer window.

However, the club's subsequent slide into the bottom three forced the Icelander's hand and Pardew is the second managerial casualty of the Premiership season - following Iain Dowie's exit from Charlton.

After a shaky start, Pardew became a firm favourite at Upton Park as he steered them to promotion to the Premiership in 2005 and then cemented their position in the top flight by guiding them to the FA Cup final and a Uefa Cup place.

However, it has been an entirely different scenario this term, with the Hammers finding points hard to come by - despite the high-profile signings of Argentine internationals Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano.

Hammers legend Frank Lampard Snr believes the arrival of the Argentine duo at the end of August was central to the club's demise.

"It was only six months ago that everyone was saying how well Alan was doing," Lampard told BBC Five Live.

"It seems since he brought in Tevez and Mascherano it's all gone wrong.

"It's a shame that he's gone but football is like that. You get your chance and as soon as you start losing games, the pressure's on."

I feel a bit sorry for Pardew. He's lead West Ham to numerous cup finals over the past three years and now he's being sacked. The two Argentinians coming to West Ham has really upset the balance at West Ham with all the players and I think thats why some of the players haven't being performing to their best.

So who do we all think will succed him then? :o

Curbs is pretty much nailed on I would say

Well thats who the fans want and thats who I think would be best suited to the top, but with the new guy as chairman then I wouldn't be suprised if Sven actually ended up in charge. :o

Could they afford £5m a year for a manager though

Probably.

I don't quite know how much their new chairman is prepared to put into the club, but I would say it would be a fair amount, so I think they will be able to afford him, but it would be a bad move for the club if Sven were to become manager.

Stupid thing to do <_< Curbs is the obvious choice but they're gonna go for Eriksson aren't they?
I think Sven will want a bigger job tbh, I would not be surprised if Wenger moves on at the end of the season to somewhere like Real Madrid and then Sven goes to Arsenal, I really don't see a team in relegation trouble as high enough profile for someone of Sven's vanity
wrong person(s) has gone -_- Tevez and Mascherano should be shipped out in January. Another factor which they cant blame their poor performance on alone is Ashton's injury

How pathetic. Considering what he's had to put up with it's no wonder he's had a rough start to the new campaign. Main target man injured, captain p*ssed off due to the Arsenal situation and then on top of all that they have the public morale lowering of the two Argentians arriving.

Considering all that he's done for the club they should be ashamed of themselves.

Spot on.

Like Charlton who got rid of a good manager all too quickly, I now hope the Hammers get relegated, because that is what they deserve.

He was a good manger But now the think he is c**p becuse there are doing quite bad. :D

At the end of the day a manager is judged by RESULTS, Dowie and Pardew were not bringing in the results

Exactly what I was going to say. It's a shame because often good managers can make good signings, put forth a good, competent team and then go through a bad patch and get the sack... it's moronic how the whole system works <_<

I know he wasn't bringing in the results but you don't become a bad manager over night. Without Pardew, West Ham would no doubt still be stuck in the Championship, clinging on to that small chance of getting a play-off place. I know now football is a busniess, and chairmen have got to be ruthless when dealing with mangers but the fact is without Pardew, West Ham would no doubt he struggling in the Championship.

The only West Ham fan I know is extremely glad. So you can say it's a mistake, but I think you'd be wrong. He's had time to prove himself this season and failed. He's the man that's been in charge of their worst run for over half a century. That, to me, isn't good enough. His teamhaven't scored a goal away from home for months. Again, NOT good enough.

Last season, West Ham played attractive football with two up front and were one of the best footballing teams in the league. This year he has ADDED around 6-8 players to the squad and they're doing a hell of a lot worse and look a hell of a lot worse. You can't blame this on Ashton being injured, he only signed in January and West Ham were perfectly good enough before he came.

It's about time IMO because he's easily been the worst manager of the season so far.

And if they continue the way they are at the moment it'll be Pardew that turns them into a Championship side...

I know West Ham are in a bad state at the moment but the main reason they're in such a bad state it due to the fact of Tevez and Mascherano arriving. It will have totally upset the balance of the teams, I mean West Ham have what about six decent strikers of their books? On reputation alone Pardew will have been made not to play Tevez and Mascherano, and because of this some of the players morale will have suffered.

They did begin to go on a decent run again, but that run seems short lived now.

Curbs definitley seems like the front runner for the West Ham job at the moment.

He's definitley the best man for the job IMO.
